Help with a project
Nov. 7th, 2006 02:34 amI've been invited to a work on a project for the Mississippi Writing/Thinking Institute as a member of a think tank that seeks to discover ways in which we can incorporate various technologies into the Institute.
The following are the main components of the Institute:
1. Summer Institute: an intensive course in teaching writing that emphasizes writing across the curriculum and enrolls teachers from all levels of education
2. Continuity meetings: after attending the Summer Institute, participants are encouraged to remain involved with the project. Meetings are held throughout the year at which participants make presentations of the scholarship they’ve done at the Institute (usually a lesson plan, activity, or teaching strategy). Participants also report on conferences they’ve attended or other areas of interest to the group.
3. Professional development: the Institute encourages its participants to consider publishing their scholarship and giving public papers at conferences.
I would really appreciate information from those of you in academia (either as teachers or students) about the ways you've used technology in the classroom or as an administrative tool. (Technology has been loosely defined here, and I believe runs the gamut from podcasting to Power Point). I am particularly interested in podcasting and blogging as teaching tools as I've not used those myself in the classroom.
My own thoughts on the topic include podcasting the continuity meetings and presentations at the Summer Institute, creating a blog that functions like a writer's workshop for professional development, and creating an online list of possible publishing venues and the requirements for publishing in each. (I feel the last is particularly important because while the Institute is open to teachers at all levels, I was the first post-secondary teacher to go through and they've only had one other since at this site. Most of the teachers who receive this training are elementary school teachers who really need to be encouraged to publish. A list like that could really alleviate their anxiety about not knowing what to do with a document or where to send it.)
Please feel free to send other people to this post.
