Home sick

1. I have finally succumbed to whatever sickness has been going around our house. I almost never get respiratory stuff, so when I do, I am always astonished by how terrible a cold feels. I really should have stayed home yesterday instead of driving an hour each way to teach on the satellite campus, teaching here, and then driving an hour each way to go to the urologist in the afternoon. By the evening, I could barely speak. I feel somewhat better today. I had to go get medicine that's gluten free *and* meets the IC diet requirements. I didn't have any on hand because I almost never get colds. And don't even get me started on how many medicines have citric or ascorbic acid in them.

2. I've decided to start taking Elmiron, the drug for IC. I cannot have another flare up like the one last week if I can help it. I was pretty much laid up and unable to do anything. And immediately catching this cold on the heels of that flare up waning has made me extremely unproductive in the last week.

I don't really want to take Elmiron. I am not comforted when the doctor tells me that they don't know exactly how the drug works. I am also not comforted by the potential side effects which include GI issues and hair loss. But we'll see. The doc says that GI issues usually diminish if people can stick with the drug long enough. Now if I can just get the prescription filled. He supposedly called it in yesterday, but the pharmacy didn't receive it.

3. I have found myself becoming more and more anxious as our political situation in the U.S. deteriorates. Being sick doesn't help as the two main ways I combat my anxiety are through exercise (which I've been largely unable to do in the last week) and through being productive (which has also fallen by the wayside). I think I'm going to have to put some limits on myself. I want to be an informed citizen and do my part in the Resistance, but the way I've been feeling in the past week is counterproductive.

So, as Bill Maher would say, New Rules:

A. I will not watch Fox News at the gym even though it is the only available program. I will move to a machine that makes looking at the TV difficult.

B. I will only read NPR once a day.

C. I will continue to listen to NPR when in the car.

D. I will stop reading the US Politics thread on FFA.

E. I will stop rehearsing conversations with my family members that I will never have. I actually tried to look up their Facebooks this weekend just to see if they'd expressed any regrets (WTF, self?!) and was unable to see anything because I don't have an account (which is for the best). I even looked up Southern Baptist responses to this latest executive order and was surprised to see that it's being condemned even from that quarter. I am pleasantly shocked, but it's too little too late, of course.

Ugh, only one channel at the gym? You'd think if they have several screens then at least a few of them could be tuned to inoffensive house remodelling porn. These are good resolutions, though! Get that BP down.

*hugs* & good luck with the new meds.

1. I am sorry you're sick. Maybe your bout of IC depressed your immune system enough that you caught the cold? Sometimes *redacted condition* would do that for me. Email me if you want more details on that and on medication side effects - I've had similar experiences, but don't want to talk in an unlocked post. Ugh.

A. Earbuds and a cell phone with Netflix?

B. I love NPR, but sometimes its food page is all I can handle.

D. I ditched that thread sometime in the week before the election. I cannot handle it. Occasionally I dip my toe in and check and then flee. Maybe around mid-terms.

Yeah. I feel you.

Sally and I have instituted a NO POLITICS DISCUSSION AT NIGHT rule; once we sit down in the den, it's only pleasant news about cats or television or vids of otters frolicking.

(Doesn't make mornings nicer, of course...)

Update, I failed last night due to Berkeley Milo protests I ended up seeing some traces of. ;) But, generally a solid plan. Has helped Sally!

I'm sorry you're sick! Colds really can be surprisingly awful, despite how we usually talk about them like minor inconveniences. I hope you start feeling better ASAP!

Your strategies seem very reasonable. Taking care of your mental health is important, and so hard right now. *hugs*

It sounds awfully wretched. ;_;

C finished his antibiotics today and is only dealing with the remnants of a cough now, finally, and I'm basically okay, just vaguely congested. So not too bad, really.

Oh my God, I am so glad I am not in an area of the country where Fox News would be played in waiting rooms and public spaces. D:

Ugh, that's so awful! I would have thought it wouldn't be so widespread because it's a cable channel and thus some places might be too cheap to pay for it. (That's the reason that even though Carla is subjected to Rush Limbaugh and other rightwing radio while at her parents', at least they're not blaring Fox News. They don't want to pay for cable.)

Here places like that usually have local news or some sort of trashy daytime TV like Maury Povich or whoever is on these days.

I'm that way, too. I never get sick, so when I actually have a cold it's Grand Opera.

I think we all need to find ways to make ourselves part of the Resistance without going slowly insane. My Very Progressive Church has been involved in the march, other activism, the whole denomination is considering becoming a Sanctuary, etc etc, but in the Prayers of the People, the reader mentioned "our President, Donald." (I haven't been to service in a few weeks, so this was my first time hearing it.) I wanted to throw up. The pastor said we always did. But it struck me that although I was hugely not a fan of the pres before Obama, "our President, George" did not make me want to throw up.

I'm trying to believe that, since #MangoMussolini is a human being, he must have That of God within him. In Christian terms, it is not the healthy man who needs a physician, but the sick man, and I'm struggling to think of anyone else who is in greater need of prayers and redemption.

Which is pretty much what our rector said. But I want to not-hear about him for some short space of time, and as the rest of my life seems deluged by it . . . it took away the peace I was feeling, put it that way.

I do understand. On a somewhat lower moral plane, there is a perpetual debate on FFA about whether it's enough to have separate US politics threads or whether we need to be able to go someplace and just kick back and talk about SPN or something without the horrors of mundane reality intruding.

Are you the only progressive who uses your gym? Can't you request a channel?

You can give 'em a Full O'Hara: "Fiddle-de-dee, politics is so DEPRESSING! I want to see something FUN when I'm at the gym!"
