You, my dear, are one of the funniest, funnest, kindest, and most generous people I have ever had the pleasure to meet in fandom or out. I am so grateful for your friendship, and I can't imagine my life without it.

Things #1 and #2:

Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] lyrstzha! Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] zillah975!

I'm lucky to have friends like you in my life. *hugs*

Thing #3:

[livejournal.com profile] mosca has written the most exquisitely wonderful DS9 fic I think I've ever read called Parallel Evolution. The story is Worf/Jadzia, Garak/Bashir, Leeta/Rom; rated Adult. And it was written for MEEEEEEEEEEE! But I would love this story even if it were not written for me. It's about sexual expression that isn't human-centric and heteronormative. It's about Jadzia and how she differentiates her own desires from the desires of all of Dax's other hosts. It's about Worf and how sometimes he likes to bottom. It's about the Wildean banter that characterize Garak and Bashir. It's about turning conventional human sexual expectations on their head. It's about the web of shared experiences that link these people, about the secrets they share, about the vast variety of this family they have made. *squee squee squee* Also, Worf and Jadzia doing it is never not awesome.

1. Happy birthday tomorrow, [livejournal.com profile] hermionesviolin! I hope you have a wonderful, wonderful day full of mac and cheese and beautiful weather. :)

2. OMG *wails* Local channels on DirecTV are contingent on nearby cities and now I have no CW. *sob sob sob* What am I gonna do, y'all? Now that I have real internet, does CW put the episodes online? How long after they air does the network do that? If at all? This seriously blows.

3. I've written about a thousand words of my epic CW RPF where Jared and Jensen are grad students. I'm kind of cracking myself up, so at least I know I'll have amused myself if nothing else. LOL

4. Vid recs! I know nothing about vids or what to say about them as my fannishness has been largely bereft of them, so bear that in mind when reading my reviews.

Strange and Beautiful by kropelka777; SGA; McShep;
First off, I adore the song ("Strange and Beautiful" by Aqualung) this vid is set to. Back in Oxford, Rebel Radio played this song every day for a week and then I never heard it again and the only lyrics I remembered were "I'll put a spell on you" which is not conducive to googling. LOL This vid is a "Last Man" vid and it is so achingly beautiful. The transitions between scenes and the way the lyrics match what's happening is really well done. Also, because all the dialogue is stripped, we're able to focus so tightly on facial expression and body language (two things which I think in an episode are often subsumed by dialogue and plot and other characters' movements) and it sounds so stupid to say, but my god, I did not realize the faces those boys make at each other sometimes. At each other. Not in different scenes with different people and woven together to make a new context. But at each other. I think this is a really powerful piece and the ending is nothing short of perfect.

The Highwayman by hesternic; SGA; John-centric gen
I don't think this vid is as well crafted as the previous, but I really like this song and I think it's really neat the way the lyrics mesh with the show.

Beautiful Wreck by [livejournal.com profile] busaikko; SGA; McShep
I wasn't familiar with this song before I watched this vid, but I love the lyrics and I think it's a really interesting look at John and Rodney. I like the way that the perspective of the song switches back and forth between John worrying about Rodney and Rodney worrying about John. Heavy emphasis on "The Last Man" here as well.

1. Happy birthday to both [livejournal.com profile] crazydiamondsue and [livejournal.com profile] lyrstzha. I missed both these lovely ladies' birthdays while in Georgia and I hope they had magnificent celebrations involving Sam Winchester's cake covered abs and some quality time with a healthy doggie, respectively.

2. [livejournal.com profile] thelastgoodname posted on The Amber Spyglass: HERE. Come talk about His Dark Materials with us.

3. My interviews both went amazingly well. I felt confident and comfortable and I think I acquitted myself smashingly. I think it's quite possible that I will be offered both jobs and then have some choice. (And I still may get interviews in OK and TN.) So, cross your fingers for me again as the waiting game resumes; I likely won't hear anything until the end of May as I was the first applicant to interview at both GA colleges.

Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] kittypoker1!!!!! I hope the day is wonderful. I'm very grateful for your friendship.

If you're like me, while you're into McShep, sometimes you want to read something different. In that vein, I offer you:

Women's Work by Rachel Sabotini Miko/Cadman PG-13 It's become apparent to me that when someone wants to write an incredibly thoughtful SGA story, she chooses Miko as the POV character. I absolutely love seeing Pegasus through Miko's eyes; her observations are not at all what Rodney sees or John sees or even what Elizabeth sees. It's wonderful watching this character who gets a few onscreen minutes as a joke become this nuanced and strong woman. Really excellent read.

Courtship Ritual by Kylie Lee Beckett/Halling Adult I know what you're thinking. How would this even work? Why should I care? Oh, you should care, my friends. You should care. Because this story is freaking amazing. You get a very real sense of how these two men are from different cultures in the way that they approach their relationship and the way that they expect their respective groups to react. I think that what I like most about this fic is that it is willing to bring up difficult issues and then not resolve them; I love that there's no easy fix for the problems in their relationship. The final chapter is from John's perspective and it's a voyeurism scene, which pushes all my buttons--it's really hot, and John being so guiltily turned on is some happy fun time reading. I do think however that the last chapter is tonally different from the rest of the fic.

A Matter of Convenience by Cinaed Radek/Rodney Adult Rodney and Radek start sleeping together as a matter of convenience, but like most things in Pegasus their relationship doesn't remain convenient for long. I have a real soft spot for Radek/Rodney and this is a very nice look at the pairing. I especially love that they don't see it coming, how much they actually mean to each other.

Zacatky by Ankhmutes Rodney/Radek PG-13ish I love love fic that tells us how and why everyone got invovled with the Stargate program and this story of Radek's recruitment is a lot of fun. Watching Radek's universe expand is a real pleasure.

Retromancy by JiM Caldwell/Sheppard Adult You know, I've been wondering where all the Caldwell/Sheppard slash is hiding and I finally found a piece. Lucky for me it's a good one. LOL Caldwell is so damaged here; I feel quite sorry for him and for John as well. This is an unflinching look at many of the ways in which a relationship of this nature is screwed up. Everybody should read this story.

First, let me wish [livejournal.com profile] spikedluv a glorious and happy birthday! Many, many happy returns.

I'd like to pimp [livejournal.com profile] ana_grrl's Random Title Generator Masterlist. This ficathon turned out scads of fic and art in a variety of fandoms including Firefly, SPN, SGA, Torchwood and Sports Night. Go read!!

On the way back into town from New Orleans, I rented Stargate the movie because I'd borrowed SG-1 season one from my parents and I figured in for a penny, in for a pound. I'd only seen the movie once in the theaters but I remembered that I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed it this time as well, but not nearly as much as either series. I think the series special effects are far superior and I think Richard Dean Anderson's interpretation of Colonel O'Neill is much more interesting than Kurt Russell's. Of course, in his defense, it's a lot easier to develop a character over the course of a season than two hours of a movie.

I'm three episodes away from the season finale of SG-1 season one and I gotta say, I'm loving it. Despite the occasional bomb (O'Neill has to grow old to discover carpe diem? Lame), I think the growing closeness between the team members is beautifully drawn and it's fun watching them discover the things that are just taken for granted on SGA. I've also started watching SGA season three and it's shaping up to be great as well. They just keep on sliding down that slippery slope don't they? LOL

And in conclusion, how much do I love Elizabeth Weir and Sam Carter and Dr. Frasier? More than words can say.

SGA recs )

Happy Birthday, [livejournal.com profile] shannon730! You are such a generous and good hearted person. You are welcoming to fandom newbies and nurturing to those of us who've been around for a while. I'm grateful you're my friend. Except a belated card in the mail!

I want to wish a happy birthday to the most wonderful woman around lj, [livejournal.com profile] amejisuto--she who is unfailingly kind and generous with her squee and praise. She is a good writer and a good friend and she makes fandom fun. Happy birthday, sweetie.

I also have a request. My girlfriend is making a SPN soundtrack and she can't find a legal download of "Back in Black" anywhere on the internets. Anybody can upload a copy of the song and USENDIT me? *bats eyelashes*

I want to wish a very happy birthday to one of the very nicest people I know, either on lj or in rl. [livejournal.com profile] executrix is a brilliant writer, an amazing cheerleader for her fellow fans, wittier than anybody human has a right to be, and a wonderfully and fiercely supportive friend. I know that I could not have shouldered some of the emotional burdens of this past year without her friendship to help me through. I look forward to more years of friendship in the future. Keep your eyes peeled, Exec! A package is coming your way!
