I get so frustrated with these cooking competition shows.

First, I think it's absolute BS that the judges watch the cooking. Especially on a show like Iron Chef, the judges are biased in favor of Bobby Flay the Iron Chefs, and I don't think they can objectively judge the dishes when they know who made them. The dishes ought to be anonymous on all these shows to eliminate bias.

Second, the performative rage when someone puts some sides on the plate is ridiculous. The judges don't always do it on Chopped, but sometimes they get pissy when a chef serves up the kind of plate of food that many people normally describe as dinner; you know, a protein + some sides. (That's not the only way to eat dinner. We eat tons of one-pot wonders or salads in this household.) But sometimes when they don't get a tiny cube of meat in an artful swirl of carefully spackled on sauce surrounded by a tiny hedge of microgreens, the judges throw such a shit fit. On an episode I watched tonight, they lit into a chef for putting a piece of bread on the plate to sop up his saucy dish. They told him he didn't need the bread. The bread was unnecessary. When they chopped him, they mentioned the bread as an offense that led to his elmination.

And I just imagine these people at home eating a steak the size of a deck of cards and silently weeping into their linen napkins because they wish they could have a scant mouthful of potatoes to go along. Or regretfully dumping the broth from a pot of moules marinieres down the sink because there's just no good way to eat it. Oh, how they wish some mechanism for sopping up the glorious wine and butter and yummy existed. What could it be? WE JUST DON'T KNOW!

I mean, my PawPaw, who admittedly probably never encountered any food more adventurous than a fruit salad with coconut sprinkles, never ate a meal without bread. No such thing as dinner without bread to go along in his universe.

IT'S NOT WEIRD TO EAT BREAD WITH A MEAL. OMG, THIS SHOW IS DRIVING ME BONKERS!

We cannot be the only household consuming copious amounts of TV dealing with food in some way. From Man Vs. Food to Iron Chef, to Top Chef and Worst Cooks--if the TV is on in our house, it's likely to be tuned to Food Network, the Cooking Channel, or the Travel Channel.

I'm not really interested in participating in any fandom for these shows, but I'd love to talk about them with someone. Surely you all have many thoughts about the various chefs that star in these shows and want to share them with me, yes?

Here are some of mine:

I used to really be annoyed by Bobby Flay. Something about him rubbed me the wrong way, and I hated how everything he cooks has to include corn as a main ingredient. LOL Watching him on Worst Cooks sold me on him, though. He has a great sense of humor, and he's really kind and encouraging with the cooks he mentors on that show. I get a similar vibe from him on Throwdown. I think I had seen him as being really pretentious, but it's clear on Throwdown how much he respects the people he's competing against. My opinion of him has completely changed.

My opinion of Anne Burrell has completely changed as well. I used to really like her; she always had such a positive attitude when working with Mario Batali on Iron Chef. And she was similarly cheerful and genuinely helpful in the first round of Worst Cooks that I watched her on (which I think was the round with Robert Irvine). But then something about her personality changed to me; she started to seem mean-spirited to me, impatient and arrogant. IDK if I had to have somewhere to shift that antipathy to Bobby Flay I'd been nursing or what LOL.

Okay, I got pissed off last week when SPOILERS ) got cut from the show. The point is not that they get everything spot on, but that they show a general upward arc of improvement; missteps will be made along the way, but I think Chef Anne and Chef Robert have to take the total performance into consideration rather than the outcome of any single challenge.

Well, tonight SPOILERS ) got cut, and I am so utterly disgusted.

MOAR RANTING )

My picks for the ultimate showdown are George and Joshie (possibly Kelsey, possibly Carlos).

Also, anybody who wants to discuss the WTFery that leads a grown man to prefer being called Joshie, be my guest.
