OK, some people are just evil, and some fandoms accumulate a raft of evil people, BUT I truly believe the default setting for fans is "a convert to my fandom is someone who is about to obtain the priceless privilege of READING MY FICS" so there's every incentive to be friendly and welcome them aboard.
