we're gonna win in the end

The Shadow of the Wind (The Cemetery of Forgotten Books, #1)The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book is so good.

It is so beautifully written. It's a mystery, and the mystery remains compelling right up to the final pages.

It is full of really interesting and sympathetic characters that I root for and terrible evil that I root against.

The gothic elements are fantastically done.

Barcelona is another character in the book, and I very much enjoy getting to know the city through the characters' eyes.

This is a sad book, a tragic book in many ways, but it is also a hopeful book, and I needed to read something hopeful right now.

Ha! I was right. Mara is a good guy. Lighthope isn't telling the full truth.

Catra is breaking my heart. I mean, she's responsible for her choices, and she's making bad ones, but I completely understand them and feel so bad for her. She just wants the parental figures in her life who have abused her to accept her. And they will not, no matter what she does, but she throws herself against that brick wall until she is bloody, and it is hard to watch. And Adora loves her and would be her friend, but she can't let Adora win, and I understand that, too. :(

And what is up with this show making me care about Entrapta's budding romance friendship with Hordac? Damn, you show. I mean, I was half convinced that the power of her friendship was going to change him for the better before Catra lied that Entrapta had betrayed him and destroyed any progress he'd made. I suspect that she is going to be different now that she has seen firsthand that Catra is willing to betray everyone.

But what really breaks my heart is Scorpia. She loves Catra so much, and they are so happy in the Crimson Waste, and I wish Catra had been able to let go and stay there with her. Catra is never going to be the friend or the girlfriend Scorpia deserves, and I hope she can move on and be happy. Kinda shipping her with Mermista, not gonna lie.

3. We finished Iron Fist season 2. OMG, y'all, how could they tease us with that glorious season that was to come and not follow through? I am so sad for what could have been.

I am pleased beyond the telling of it that Colleen ends up with the fist. How about that final shot where she's figured out how to integrate the fist with her sword?! Hell, yes! And I love the implication that her family is somehow connected to Kun Lun. I have actually been idly speculating about that since some point in season one.

I love her friendship with Misty. It is one of my favorite things about the whole show.

Love Mrs. Yang hard. Love that all the major players in Chinatown right now are women.

I love every single thing about Ward in these last two episodes. I love the beginnings of a reconciliation with Joy. I love that while Bethany shuts him down, it's not a forever shut down, and I don't blame her. The bruises on his face haven't even healed. She has to be wary. I love that Danny says, "You're coming with me" and doesn't take no for an answer. The last five minutes of the series are all I have ever wanted from this show: the Danny and Ward crime fighting duo! Oh, my heart! And Danny has the fist again, and he can integrate it with weapons too! Yay!!!!!!!!

I like that Walker refuses to leave Joy alone. That could have been a very interesting thing to revisit in future seasons.

The only thing I do not like is Danny and Colleen breaking up. I don't think the show means to imply this, but it reads like he has to leave because she has the fist and he couldn't handle being her sidekick while she has it and he doesn't. Also, I really love their relationship, and I don't want them to be split up.
