Go slowly with it -- start with small amounts, since your hair is not super curly.

Also a trick -- don't blow dry your hair all the way to full dryness. At dampness, lean over and shake your head vigorously and let it air dry the rest of the way. I used to do this to get the hair to settle into curls rather than individual strands. I forget where I got the idea.
