I'd have to watch the series again because at this point I have no idea what's ubiquitous fanon and what actually happened in the show hahaha, oh this is real. Sometimes, I have to ask myself "wait what DO we know about Steve's parents from canon, again?" XD
I don't know the YA book you mention, but if you ever to decide to try to write something in this fandom, I'll cheer you on! ;D
