Based on your raves, and before reading any reviews in detail, including yours, I checked out Annihilation from the library and I am halfway through it and not enjoying it at all.
The immersive otherworldly effect of the prose reminded me of Engine Summer by Crowley, another book that I tried because it was the favorite of a friend of mine....I did finish it but I wasn't under its spell like she was.
It is so strange how one person's awesome fascinating novel doesn't speak to someone else at all, not even a little bit! I feel wistful that many people see magic in this book but I am just bored!
