"Miller's Crossing" Review: SGA; SPOILERS
I have really mixed feelings about this episode. It’s not my favorite by a long shot, but I don’t think it’s a terrible episode. However, overall, it left me feeling uneasy and disturbed.
Most of my uneasiness was caused by the ongoing argument my husband Josh and I had during the episode. Josh interprets Rodney much more negatively than I do. Pretty much he thinks Rodney's a clueless dick who fixes things and brings the funny. And his character assessment isn't wrong. I sometimes wonder how much of my affection for Rodney can be directly attributed to fanfic rather than canon. That being said, I really like Rodney's character and I tend to view his assholish or clueless behavior as the product of social awkwardness or insecurity. I think he's shown in canon as unfailingly loyal and surprisingly brave.
Josh kept saying that every move Rodney made was stupid. I agreed with him that going in without waiting for Sheppard and Ronon was dumb. Didn't they watch "What is and What Never Should Be?" But Josh said Rodney trying to escape was stupid and I completely disagreed with him. I thought Rodney's fears were valid. This guy kidnapped them with armed men and there's no guarantee that he won't kill them if they fail to save his daughter. That's a very real concern. Of course, running around the compound willynilly doesn't solve their problems, but I think Rodney's right to concentrate on escape rather than saving the daughter initially.
I know it's silly that arguing with my husband has harshed my episode squee, but there you have it.
The second thing that discomfitted me in this episode is Sheppard. He emotionally maniuplates a man who just lost his child, a man who is willing to spend the rest of his life in prison to save her, into committing suicide. I was debating with someone in
sga_talk whether Dark!Sheppard is canonical or not. Well, ladies and gentlemen, here he is. By discomfitted I don't mean that I think this is bad writing or that I wish it hadn't happened. It complicates Sheppard deliciously and I actually enjoy being disturbed by my TV shows or I wouldn't have stuck with Angel all those years. LOL And that scene between Sheppard and Rodney where you can literally see on Sheppard's face that he is completely unwilling to lose Rodney for any reason--that's gold.
I want someone to write the fic that shows us what happens behind those closed doors--Wallace walking in stoically and then thrashing in the Wraith's embrace and begging to be saved and Sheppard watching and hating himself and feeling guilty and knowing he'd make the same choice again. I want to read that.
Finally, just a couple shout outs: Walter, yay! Ronon in street clothes, yum!! Madison's enormous cookie, heee!
