When Voyager first aired in the US, it started on one network and then switched to another in season two, and we didn't get the second network. So I never really had the opportunity to watch much of the show.
TNG I liked as a kid, but now I can see that it's just seven seasons of one off epeisodes. There's no real overarching story arc, and none of the characters get any real kind of character development except Picard and Data. It's the most static bunch of characters ever. I adore isolated episodes of that franchise, but overall, it's just not as well constructed as it could be.
Now, DS9 is a show that has a series long story arc that begins in the first episode and culminates in the final. Everybody, everybody (even the minor characters) get buttloads of character development. In fact, one of my favorite things is the way minor characters consistently get screen and story time. I also love the strong women--Kira, Dax, the Kai. There's a real darkness to DS9 that's absent from TNG that I really love too.
I was afraid when we first started watching Voyager that it would be more like TNG than DS9, and I am so glad to be proven wrong. Like you, I am so stoked about all the awesome ladies! All the POC! And I'm stoked about the level of character development, the wonderful attention to narrative, the equal distribution of focus on the ensemble cast. And now that we're into season three, I can say with confidence, that Janeway would totally kick Picard, Kirk, and Sikso's ass in a StarFleet captain face-off.
I'm trying to find fic now, and it's hard. *whines* A top level post coming soon about that. Part of the problem is that while I'm spoiled for general stuff--I know they finally get home, I know 7 is a Borg, I know Paris and Torres eventually get together--but I don't know a lot of the specifics and I don't want to completely spoil myself. Also, because it's an older fandom, links are just dead and some of them don't respond to the Wayback machine. *sniffle*
