Vid recs!

Avatar Dance Mix by [livejournal.com profile] friendshipper; Avatar
This is a really fun vid to watch. Sholio does an excellent job of editing here, and I will always always be a sucker for those kids hugging each other. And Appa!!

One Girl Revolution by [livejournal.com profile] dangen; Multi-fandom
I don't know if I can be coherent enough about this vid to say anything other than, GIRLS ARE AWESOME OMG GIRL POWER FOREVER! Love, love all the fandoms represented (including B7 and my girl Janeway!), and I adore the lyrics to this song. Guaranteed rewatcher.

Around the Bend by [livejournal.com profile] dangen; Multi-fandom
This is a vid about women driving cars and flying planes and spaceships and riding motorcycles and in general being all kinds of badass and awesome. As with the previous vid, I am so stoked about all the fandoms represented, but what's even better is that the vidder intersperses images of actual for-reals-yo woman taking the wheel.

Wild Child by [livejournal.com profile] calapine; Multi-fandom
You should be sensing a theme about now, and that them is LADIES! AWESOME LADIES! This has some wonderful and unexpected fandoms represented (hello, Lois and Clark), and like the vids recced before, does an excellent job of celebrating women.

What About by [livejournal.com profile] fizzyblogic; Multi-fandom
This vid belongs to the same family as the ones I've just recced, and yet inexplicably it has only a handful of comments. Run, go, watch this vid! Revel in the women being awesome. Tell the vidder you liked it. :)

I Enjoy Being a Girl by [livejournal.com profile] absolutedestiny; Multi-fannish
In this vid, fewer fandoms are represented than the others I've recced, but the vid forms a much more cohesive narrative. Strong parallels are drawn between the characters in the vid, and we're shown clips of the women engaging in the same or similar activities back to back. Quite fun to watch.

Kiss Mr. Spock by gin1119; TOS Kirk/Spock
Oh, the silly! This is really a nicely edited vid that reimagines Kirk and Spock as Eric and Ariel from The Little Mermaid. Thank you, TOS, for giving us slash so thick, you can scrape it off the screen.

Voyager versus South Park by ZoeAmory; Voyager and South Park
Aahahahhahahaaahahah! This is like thirty seconds of South Park audio set to Voyager video, and it makes me snort milk out of my nose.

Janeway's Hair by dreamsavvy; Voyager
Just what it says on the tin--the many and multifarious hairstyles of Kathryn Janeway. (I am so besotted with this woman, it's not even funny.)

With or Without You by northernstar24; Kira/Odo DS9
This vid really cleverly mixes audio from the series with the song. It's pretty much the best shipper vid I've ever seen for these two. Makes me tear up like nobody's business. I love the way this vid articulates the tension between the love Odo feels for Kira and the duty he feels to his people.

Atheists Don't Have No Songs by Steve Martin
Give the vid two seconds; it's out of focus to start with. This is a barbershop quartet singing the whole of the Atheist Hymnal. *loves*

Oh, no fair! The Janeway's Hair vid is blocked in Germany. :(

(I love that woman so much, you have no idea. ♥)

Oh, durn. I hate that for you because it is awesome. It's set to the hair song from, well, Hair LOL and it's just fun.

You know, I'll always have mad love for TOS and TNG was the Trek of my childhood (even though in retrospect, it's not really that good of a show) and therefore all full of the nostalgia glory. Picard has always been my favorite captain even though I've long thought that DS9 is the best of the Trek franchises. Now that I'm watching Voyager for the first time, I gotta say that Janeway puts them all to shame and Voyager is giving DS9 a run for its money. She's my hero! And she's hot! And she's my hero! LOL

Voyager has been my favourite Trek show ever since it first aired - I fell completely in love with it right from the start. The only other Trek that comes close is TOS - I never managed to fully warm up to either TNG or DS9.

Janeway is my hero too - she's amazing and BAMF and oh so gorgeous. Voyager is also the only Trek show that consistently and easily passes the Bechdel test, and three of the four largest pairings (J/C, C/P, P/T - only exception J/7) contain a POC. And I just loved the whole set-up and the whole crew. I feel Voyager is one of the most underappreciated shows out there.

When Voyager first aired in the US, it started on one network and then switched to another in season two, and we didn't get the second network. So I never really had the opportunity to watch much of the show.

TNG I liked as a kid, but now I can see that it's just seven seasons of one off epeisodes. There's no real overarching story arc, and none of the characters get any real kind of character development except Picard and Data. It's the most static bunch of characters ever. I adore isolated episodes of that franchise, but overall, it's just not as well constructed as it could be.

Now, DS9 is a show that has a series long story arc that begins in the first episode and culminates in the final. Everybody, everybody (even the minor characters) get buttloads of character development. In fact, one of my favorite things is the way minor characters consistently get screen and story time. I also love the strong women--Kira, Dax, the Kai. There's a real darkness to DS9 that's absent from TNG that I really love too.

I was afraid when we first started watching Voyager that it would be more like TNG than DS9, and I am so glad to be proven wrong. Like you, I am so stoked about all the awesome ladies! All the POC! And I'm stoked about the level of character development, the wonderful attention to narrative, the equal distribution of focus on the ensemble cast. And now that we're into season three, I can say with confidence, that Janeway would totally kick Picard, Kirk, and Sikso's ass in a StarFleet captain face-off.

I'm trying to find fic now, and it's hard. *whines* A top level post coming soon about that. Part of the problem is that while I'm spoiled for general stuff--I know they finally get home, I know 7 is a Borg, I know Paris and Torres eventually get together--but I don't know a lot of the specifics and I don't want to completely spoil myself. Also, because it's an older fandom, links are just dead and some of them don't respond to the Wayback machine. *sniffle*

It's so cool that you're discovering Voyager now! How far along are you? I don't want to spoil you, but I'd love to talk to you about the eps you've watched. Any excuse to squee about Voyager! :)

(I absolutely agree about TNG being seven years of stand-alones. DS9 was far more satisfying from a plot perspective, but I just couldn't warm up to the characters. On VOY I fell in love with almost everyone as soon as I saw the pilot.)

And now that we're into season three, I can say with confidence, that Janeway would totally kick Picard, Kirk, and Sikso's ass in a StarFleet captain face-off.

Hee! You'll get no argument from me. She's sheer, undiluted awesome. SHE RULES.

I'm trying to find fic now, and it's hard. *whines*

What kind of fic are you looking for? I was (am) a J/C shipper, so that's where I'm most likely to be able to help, but yeah, a lot of links will be gone now. :( :( :(

I just made a post asking for recs. :)

I think I'm looking for everything--gen, het, slash. I think the pairing that grabs me most is Paris/Kim, but I like all the characters. B'Elanna has had to grow on me; I didn't like her character to begin with. I felt like she was overacting in the extreme in that first season, but her acting has mellowed considerably and now I like her character just fine.

[personal profile] trobadora 2010-09-06 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. I didn't feel she was overacting; I thought that was how she was supposed to be, and it was the character who mellowed, not the acting. Fascinating! *g*

[identity profile] lunabee34.livejournal.com 2010-09-06 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Which is certainly a valid interpretation. :)

I had heard somewhere that a disproportionate number of the DS9 actors had actually gotten their starts on the stage with theater acting rather than TV or movie acting, and I had wondered if that was true of the actor that plays Torres; I thought that might account for what I was reading as overacting--that she was used to performing for an audience that was stationary and at a remove. But I like your take on it much better. I can definitely see that B'Elanna's journey is one of coming to terms with her aggression and her outsider status and the way she feels so defensive even when people are trying to help her. It's a fascinating character arc.

Also, I forgot to say in the last comment that I'm kind of in love with your Janeway icons.

You mentioned that in your post too - one of the great things about Voyager is that they really pay attention to all their main cast. Everyone's getting their own journey and character development.

I have another icon I want to upload, but first I need my memory to cough up from which ep the pic is. It's driving me batty!

Don't worry about spoiling me. Unless it's of Tuvok dead or something, it'll be alright. :)

I knew you would love it!

I ended up posting it un-betaed because it was either that or miss the deadline for the fest. I was so nervous!

And now to the vid watching, for yea verily I have done all the laundry and cleaned the bathroom!

I love Wild Child mostly because it celebrates the baddies we love, too. I'm all for heroes getting all the props because I love me some heroes, but villains are also awesome. Especially the women.

As for the Voyager/South Park one and the one about Kate's hair: I think I love you.

The feeling is mutual, my dear.

I just couldn't stop giggling over that South Park one. So silly.
