lunabee34: (star trek: TOS ship by draculasheir)
I got an amazing story: Taking Orders (the mirrorverse remix). It's Bones/Jim in an AOS Mirrorverse setting and contains all the wonderful sexy hijinks I can never quite seem to manage in my own stories. :) Go give the author some love, my friends.

I can't wait until the reveals so I can tell you all about the story I wrote. :) If anyone feels tempted to guess, it's my usual tonal shift gig in a fandom I have written for extensively.

Off to peruse the rest of the archive. Emma's going to camp this upcoming week, so I might actually get the chance to go through the whole archive this time. Whoooooo!

End of an Era--Harry Potter Tribute by eeks1120
"Don't you ever wonder what will happen when it end? How can we let go of the ones who we call friend?" *sniffle* This is the best kind of fan song--it really *gets* what it is to love a book deeply and wholeheartedly and the sort of bittersweetness that comes when a series ends. The vid is perfectly edited to match the lyrics. The part over the bridge where it shows many of the fallen slays me. This is destined to become a classic that will be around for a long time, I think.

Draco's Milkshake by AndieHeartsYou143
Oh, it brings all the boys to the yard. And it's better than Potter's and Snape's and, well, you get the idea. :) This makes me grin like a loon.

I Swear by [personal profile] dualbunny; Smallville; Clark/Lex; MPREG OMG
Looks like the streaming is down, but you can still dl. I love this kind of vid where a completely different story is woven from existing footage. At the end of this vid, I truly believe that Clark and Lex are the parents of one adorable CatBaby. This is the bestest kind of crack of ever.

Secret Agent by llintrek; women of Star Trek
I love this vid. First, it's got the subject matter going for it. Not enough love for the ladies of Trek to ever suit Lorraine. :) Secondly, the song is fantastic. She's a sinner (cue Kai Winn); she's a saint (cue Edith Keeler). LOL I also really, really like that this doesn't showcase only the big name ladies; there are some unexpected faces in this vid, and I really like that.

I Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper by llintrek; women of Star Trek
Another fun vid in the same vein as the previous. I LOVE LIKE BURNING the implication here that all the ladies of Star Trek are queer! Yay! OMG the femslash possibilities in this vid. Deanna/K'Ehlehr, anybody?

Heroes by llintrek; DS9
I love the tone of this vid. It begins with all the holosuite adventures the crew has and their venture back to Kirk's Enterprise. And then there's a subtle tonal shift. Interwoven with all the fantasy heroics are the crew actually being heroic and leaning on each other. It's extremely emotionally affecting.
lunabee34: (yuletide: kitty by chomiji)
No Reservations: Narnia Anthony Bourdain/Chronicles of Narnia XOVER
This is the kind of fabulous that only comes out of Yuletide. It captures all of Bourdain's gritty and wry sarcasm while retaining the wonder and magic of Narnia. I love the idea of him participating in all this range of culinary experience.

(Just Like) Starting Over Star Trek RPF; Nimoy/Shatner, Pines/Quinto; Adult
This story makes me think I should have been reading Trek RPF all along. Genuinely laugh out loud funny with an off-the-wall and kooky narrative voice that makes for a zippy, fun read.

Snow, melting Alice in Wonderland/Narnia XOVER
I have always believed that Susan gets a really shitty deal in the Chronicles of Narnia--barred from heaven forever because she dared to grow up, dared to *gasp* entertain the first glimmmer of a burgeoning sexuality? Wow. That anvil felt lovely, Lewis. (I love the way Gaiman addresses this in his short story about Susan). In this story, Susan meets up with Alice and finds her way once again to a land reality-adjacent. This is a deeply sad story.

A Lesson in Uselessness Alice in Wonderland/Beauty and the Beast XOVER
Here, Alice finds herself in the Beast's castle. She figures Belle is a pretty good role model. *loves*

we can't live in the present forever Back to the Future
Oh, my heart. *sniff* Memories all superimposed on one another, and how in the world is Marty to know which is real anymore. A nice look at the possible psychological consequences of time travel.

A Tangible Help Dracula by Stoker
This is a deeper look at Harker during his imprisonment by Dracula. Excellent narrative voice.

The Safety Dance-[Multi-fandom, Movie Dancing by shoopdancer2504
Just what it says on the tin.

Marching On by dazzleme7; HP
This is the best love letter to the Harry Potter series I think I've seen. This is about family, family of origin and family of choice, and most of the characters get a moment in the limelight (Yay, Neville and Luna! All the Fred and George bits kill me. *sniffle*) This is about solidarity and standing together and nobody really being alone. The vid uses footage from all the movies, including trailer material from Death Hallows Part 1, and the vidder has put this beautiful filter over everything that puts everything in high relief and makes all the images look very stark. It's visually beautiful to look at, I love the song, and it makes me tear up watching all the characters we so love march on toward their destiny. Basically, this is genius, pure and simple.

Avatar Dance Mix by [livejournal.com profile] friendshipper; Avatar
This is a really fun vid to watch. Sholio does an excellent job of editing here, and I will always always be a sucker for those kids hugging each other. And Appa!!

One Girl Revolution by [livejournal.com profile] dangen; Multi-fandom
I don't know if I can be coherent enough about this vid to say anything other than, GIRLS ARE AWESOME OMG GIRL POWER FOREVER! Love, love all the fandoms represented (including B7 and my girl Janeway!), and I adore the lyrics to this song. Guaranteed rewatcher.

Around the Bend by [livejournal.com profile] dangen; Multi-fandom
This is a vid about women driving cars and flying planes and spaceships and riding motorcycles and in general being all kinds of badass and awesome. As with the previous vid, I am so stoked about all the fandoms represented, but what's even better is that the vidder intersperses images of actual for-reals-yo woman taking the wheel.

Wild Child by [livejournal.com profile] calapine; Multi-fandom
You should be sensing a theme about now, and that them is LADIES! AWESOME LADIES! This has some wonderful and unexpected fandoms represented (hello, Lois and Clark), and like the vids recced before, does an excellent job of celebrating women.

What About by [livejournal.com profile] fizzyblogic; Multi-fandom
This vid belongs to the same family as the ones I've just recced, and yet inexplicably it has only a handful of comments. Run, go, watch this vid! Revel in the women being awesome. Tell the vidder you liked it. :)

I Enjoy Being a Girl by [livejournal.com profile] absolutedestiny; Multi-fannish
In this vid, fewer fandoms are represented than the others I've recced, but the vid forms a much more cohesive narrative. Strong parallels are drawn between the characters in the vid, and we're shown clips of the women engaging in the same or similar activities back to back. Quite fun to watch.

Kiss Mr. Spock by gin1119; TOS Kirk/Spock
Oh, the silly! This is really a nicely edited vid that reimagines Kirk and Spock as Eric and Ariel from The Little Mermaid. Thank you, TOS, for giving us slash so thick, you can scrape it off the screen.

Voyager versus South Park by ZoeAmory; Voyager and South Park
Aahahahhahahaaahahah! This is like thirty seconds of South Park audio set to Voyager video, and it makes me snort milk out of my nose.

Janeway's Hair by dreamsavvy; Voyager
Just what it says on the tin--the many and multifarious hairstyles of Kathryn Janeway. (I am so besotted with this woman, it's not even funny.)

With or Without You by northernstar24; Kira/Odo DS9
This vid really cleverly mixes audio from the series with the song. It's pretty much the best shipper vid I've ever seen for these two. Makes me tear up like nobody's business. I love the way this vid articulates the tension between the love Odo feels for Kira and the duty he feels to his people.

Atheists Don't Have No Songs by Steve Martin
Give the vid two seconds; it's out of focus to start with. This is a barbershop quartet singing the whole of the Atheist Hymnal. *loves*
lunabee34: (sg1: janet coin by hsapiens)
Recs! But first, a lament.

I've been going through Painless J's HP recs, and I came across a story that sounded right up my alley--slavery, h/c, a little light bondage, the promise of angst. All my buttons. And then when I click on the story (which is Big Bang length, not one of those Repossession length double novels) it has been posted in 109 FRAKKING DISCRETE PARTS! Aaaand, the lj layout was created by somebody with magnifying glasses for eyeballs. Whyfore the teensy print? I have done with you story! Why do people post like that? It's maddening. It's like actually chewing each mouthful twenty times. Bah.

The Sinister Nature of Cul-de-sacs by [livejournal.com profile] iminurface; j2 Big Bang; Adult
In this story, Jared is a reclusive writer and Jensen the landscape artist that moves in next door to him. There's mystery at work here as well as delayed gratification since Jared refuses to leave his home or allow anyone inside to visit him. The romance is primarily conducted through technology--email and chatting and Skype--and I like that. It's a fun read.(Is it just me or is that plural incorrectly formed? I thought it was culs de sac.)

Odysseus's Last Days by [livejournal.com profile] amand_r; HP; Harry/Snape; PG-13; deathfic; shortish
Within the first few paragraphs of this fic, the reader is made aware that one half of Snarry has died. What isn't immediately apparent is *which* half. I'll admit that my reading comprehension may be to blame, but I think the author cleverly misdirects as to who the deceased party is so that it is a bit of a revelation in the second part to discover just who is mourning who. This is a weeper for sure. It's beautifully written--language evocative and lyrical, clever turns of phrase. And such a moving and perceptive examination of grief, of the way some of us settle slowly and pull it around us like a cloak, like a buffer, like anesthesia that pains as well as it numbs.

Star Trek Bohemian Rhapsody by rockandshock
This vid amuses the hell out of me. It's just what it says on the tin. Short and silly.

Brokeback M*A*S*H by Mrspocksbrain
Again, this is just what it says on the tin, but holy shit does this vid articulate so perfectly the Hawkeye/BJ ship. This gets the whole damn thing right--the despair and isolation and frustration of the war, the desperatation, the good times in the midst of such chaos and horror. And while this vid weaves together footage in such a way to give us a narrative very different from what canon shows, it feels so true, so very real and true. Hankies out, yo.

There are no words by battlestarchik
This Janet/Sam vid is also a weeper. Surprise! This is Sam after Janet's death trying to deal with her grief. I MISS YOU, JANET!!

Rain by Patty Griffin
This isn't a fanvid but rather a song I've been listening to and digging on lately. From what I gather on the recommended sidebar of Youtube, this song has been sung by a variety of artists, but I really like this version.

SGA

What is Eternal by Gnine
This song is just ridiculous and over the top in its gravitas. Josh won't allow me to play it any longer in his presence; in fact, I started the vid up for a rewatch pre-reccing and no lie two seconds in he's telling me I have to go listen to it in another room. LOL But there's something incredibly endearing and tongue-in-cheek about applying this song to SGA because, yes. It's kinda funny to think of the show in these melodramatic terms, but at the same time, we do! It's true. I love the way this vid acknowledges those two levels--how much we care about these characters while also kinda making fun of us for it.

SPN

Gaston by LeBluu
This is Dean reimagined as Gaston from Disney's Beauty and the Beast. Very cleverly edited. Fun watch.

Smile Like You Mean It by Snooglyshnork
This is the best vid I've seen in a long, long time. It's so short and yet packs such a wallop. I found it when I was searching for Castiel vids and I instantly loved it because Misha Collins has such a beautiful, well, everything, and I was digging on watching him grin. But then, the more I watched it, the more disturbed and haunted I became by his smiles and all the pain they mask. This is really intensely good work.

Hallelujah
Okay, so I'm a sucker for this song. This is Rufus Wainwright's cover which is my second favorite version of the song after Jeff Buckley's. The lyrics work so well for SPN.

Speaking of "Hallelujah," thanks to [livejournal.com profile] thelastgoodname, I can point you to this seriously awesome article about the evolution of the song that includes clips of a ton of different covers that you will find, alas, all too short and tantilizing, especially since some of them are not Youtube-able. Definitely listen to the excerpt of the author's very funny take on the song (last clip of the article). "You don't really care for music, do ya? It's alright!" LOL Good times.

Star Trek

When I'm 64 by Killa and T. Jonesy
This is just all kinds of sweet. Not very descriptive, I know, but if you're familiar with the song, you probably already know that this is a perfectly fluffy tribute to TOS Kirk/Spock.

Steady as She Goes by Jrbatfan
This begins with a clip of TOS Kirk saying, "Helmsman, steady as she goes," and then segues into the Raconteurs song of the same name. I love the fast cuts between clips, the way that certain shots are manipulated to the rhythm of the song. This song makes you wanna dance, and this vid does the dancing for you vicariously. The repeated theme of things *not* going quite steadily is very amusing.

Never Put My Hope (the Second Generation Masters of Our Destiny remix)
TOS; Pike/Number One
You should read [livejournal.com profile] bosette's original fic, Bring the Mountain To first. This fic is gorgeous, striking, the best kind of world building and mythos-making. In this fic, the crew of the Enterprise is stuck on Talos, animals in the zoo of a far more advanced race. And drawing liberally from Judeo-Christian (but mostly Hebrew) sources, Number One kicks ass and takes names. This is a story about rebuilding a society from the ground up, about making new rules and negotiating new truths, about the death of Gods. Anon Remixer's fic is about the fallout, and it is freaking awesome.

The Moment of Our Greatness Flickers (The Love Is A Losing Hand Remix)
TOS or nu!Trek
This is the story of the end of McCoy's marriage.

There is Joy in Repetition (But Sometimes You Have to Break Routine Extended Remix)
nu!Trek
Christine Chapel is a FRELLING BADASS, and I love it love it love it love it. Really nice character insights and commentary on heroism and command.

Pipe Dreams (The Marzipan in Your Pie Plate Megamix)

Too Late to Apologize: A Declaration

The Man they Call Jayne
It's Jayne! It's fun. Yay! (Anybody else think they've identified a Ting Tings inspiration?)

Hallelujah
Dead Poets
This song is goose-bump inducing under any circumstances, but couple it with this source text and pretty much the best cover outside of Jeff Buckley, and what you get is transcendent.

You Fill Up My Senses

Okay, yes, this is kinda of the cheesiest song ever, but OMG this vid is so well-crafted and full of LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE. Srsly. Makes a Lorraine!heart go yay!

Star Trek of various ilk

Confessions of a Q; Gen
Oh, man. This weaves together the canons of TOS and TNG through the seamless and ingenious use of the Q Continuum. Guaranteed to make you smile.

The Loudest Noise (affannato, affettuoso, agitato); Gaila and Uhura Gen
This is a remix of one of [livejournal.com profile] possibly_thrice's Trek fics, so the original material was amazing to begin with. This remix is solid gold, y'all. Amazing world building, amazing characterization of Uhura and Gaila, amazing insight into what it must mean to learn to communicate with an ever increasing number of beings who are so very little like you.

Free, Freefalling (The Home Is Wherever I'm With You Remix); Chekov gen
Nu!Chekov is so painfully young, so exquisite in his rawness. Lovely character study.

Medical Leave (the Brain Bleach remix)
Kirk/Spock
Told from McCoy's POV, this is really funny and lighthearted. Good times.

Not your Daddy's Starfleet (The Through a Mirror Mix)
Kirk/Pike
Ouch. And Yay! This is a very fucked up Kirk who desperately wants to hurt himself and is using all available resources to do so. And while I usually backbutton out of daddy!kink faster than a jackrabbit over a hollow log, I totally dig the multiplicity of layers of dirty!bad!wrong it carries in this fic.

The One Constant
McCoy/Kirk
Oh, Anon Remixer, you win at Remix for life. This fic reimagines the original as an RPF fic written by a Castiel fangirl someone in the Trekverse. Such a cool idea. THIS STORY WINS A SHINY PONY!

It has come to my attention that some of you are unfamiliar with the Star Trek franchise.

*cries of blasphemy*

Instead of summary execution, I offer you this very basic compendium of the top ten episodes of each franchise and why they are Must See Trek TV. Also I might mention some novels. *snerk*

Trek in a nutshell )

How's that jive with your lists?
lunabee34: (Default)
Not fannish, but a list of actual porno movie titles that had me in stitches: HERE

Star Trek

Seeds of Retribution Kirk/Khan by Wildcat One possible, NC-17 rated, version of what happens behind these scenes between these two in the episode "Space Seed."

Kanaar by The Archivist Garak and Bashir, pre-slash. This is a really interesting exploration of Garak's character through the medium of Cardassian cuisine and dining rituals. This fic excellently invents aspects of Cardassian culture that brilliantly illuminate a burgeoning relationship.

BtVS/Ats

She Fixes You by [livejournal.com profile] executrix Faith/Giles Adult The first thing Giles noticed was not Faith's beauty, or her damaged charisma (broken at the strong places, just the thing to appeal to a Bitter Old Chaos Queen) but how very much….larger she was than Buffy.

Weighs Nothing: Five Lies That Connor’s Father Told Him by [livejournal.com profile] kita0610 5 drabbles that deal with each of Connor's fathers. The last is a killer. Really amazing piece.

Sweet, Sour, and Sweet Again (The Monster at the End of this Book Remix) by [livejournal.com profile] wisdomeagle Cordy and Fred. This piece is brilliantly constructed. I'm such a sucker for clever narrative styles and this is certainly a piece that plays with narrative and highlights our complicity as readers/viewers in the narrative arc. Very thoughtful.

Again by [livejournal.com profile] kindkit Ethan/Giles, rated R. Three decades of meetings for these old Mages. Truncated, but all the powerful for the brevity.

Prerequisites by [livejournal.com profile] tkp A poem from Angelus's point of view. Really captures the mood of his voice-over narration of the episode where he kills Jenny. Great read.

As if We Should Forget We Have No Hands by [livejournal.com profile] tabaqui Spike/Xander Adult. Xander has amnesia and Spike helps him to reclaim his past and his future. Tabi always has such novel ways of writing about an old theme. Also, one chapter of this is just pure-d scary, something that's really hard to pull off, I think.

Remnants of a Whatchamacallit Evening by [livejournal.com profile] wisdomeagle Harmony/Cordy The Harmony here is so perfect--so believeable. So funny and yet utterly tragic at the very core, which is how Harmony should be. A MUST READ.

Firefly

What River Knows by [livejournal.com profile] trekgirl55 River and Zoe have a conversation after the BDM. This is very sad, but very plausible. Great read.

Fowl Play and its sequel Fowl Tempered by [livejournal.com profile] lyrstzha 'Cause chickenification is so a word. LOL

Cave Cave by [livejournal.com profile] executrix This is crack-fic at it's best--Wash as the Xander victim of a love spell he intends for Zoe. Will test the structural integrity of your bladder.

Babysitters' Club

Kristy and the Horrible Breakup by [livejournal.com profile] thelastgoodname Kristy/Stacey Oh the voices in this are so so so perfect. Made me wanna go check all the books out of the library again. This fic is guaranteed to make you all grinny.

These are archives or lists which I have not completely gone through yet, so navigate them at your own peril. I will still be reading through them and posting recs of the stories that interest me.

Cardassia Sutra All Garak/Bashir--Erogenous neck ridges, my my.

Kathryn's DS9 Fanfic Looks to be once again mostly the doctor/the tailor.

Odo's PADD Pairs up Odo with every character under the sun....er...wormhole.

TOS rec list Some of these you must subscribe to a list to read.

ASCEMGO Golden Orgasms Award List And here we have the motherlode, ladies and gents. This is an archive of fic going back to 1997; not only are there links to fic, but links to websites which in turn have rec and link lists; you get the picture. I'm still stuck on '97 myself.

Bitter Glass by Killa Kirk/Spock, told from Spock's POV. I am impressed as hell at this. It sounds just like Spock; it is as I imagine his internal thoughts would be. It's also so incredibly detailed and conversant with the Trek mythos (even the novels) which is no easy feat. It is LONG, and you guys know if I am saying something is long than it is indeed gargantuan. But it is so freaking moving. This is also something to be read carefully, for the nuances are many. There are layers here, people. But, oh, this should be read. And the end!!!!!!!

Never Sing Alone by Quoth. Uhura/Data Adult. This is just darn fun. Nyota just never got enough screen time for my taste, although she does get some lovely stories in the profic world. And Data got enough screen time but not near enough lovin. *g*

Johnny by AdmiralTAG Picard/Beverly This takes place long into the future and is so bitter and full of emptiness. It is, given "All Good Things," rather plausible.
lunabee34: (Default)
My "Five Rather Nasty and Sadistic Things that Never Happened to Simon Tam" got nommed for a Strawberry. :)

The Best He Can Do" by [livejournal.com profile] moony Brokeback Mountain fic; Ennis-centric; very plausible look at Ennis later in life that preserves the starkness of the film version; rated PG; it's a weeper.

A Bridge Too Far by [livejournal.com profile] executrix Firefly fic; Simon/Mal; rated R; I've secretly (okay, not so secretly, LOL, dubbed this "Pon Farr Madness")

FrogStar's Trek Page of video and soundclips Don't you want to hear Shatner sing "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds?" Or maybe hear a clip of Worf breaking Geordi's violin to smithereens? There's also the not to be missed "Star Trekkin' Across the Universe," an Australian song that apparently made the charts there. "We come in peace, shoot to kill, shoot to kill, shoot to kill...."

Big Sky Country by [livejournal.com profile] executrix It's Brokeback Firefly! Very short, but all the more powerful for being succint.

This is (Not) a Love Story by [livejournal.com profile] mireille719 Buffyverse fic; Giles/Xander subtext; fits neatly into canon and makes some interesting structural choices. Will make your heart ache.
