When she got the parrot, the shelter told her he had been found on the side of a highway, which sounded like the sort of charming tale meant to encourage a certain sort of person toward adoption of an otherwise questionable pet. It would have been a charming surprise when the bird started talking, if she had been able to understand him or even recognize the language. As it was, it took her ages to work out the strange land from which he had come, and the fae folk there never quite let her live down the fact that her pet spoke better than she did even after years among them.

Binti
by Nnedi Okorafor

This novella follows Binti, a young woman who is the first of her people to attend the presitigious intergalactic Oomza University. However, the university has wronged the Medusae, a jellyfish-like people, and when Binti's ship encounters them, things go sideways. As the sole survivor of the Medusae attack, it is up to Binti to find a path forward that does not plunge everyone into a bloody war. Then, she has to settle into her first semester of college.
I liked Binti a lot. She had both a strong connection to and love for her culture, but was also curious and willing to step outside of her comfort zone. She is brave and capable, but not necessarily a super tough badass. Okorafor comes up with some really cool details for her imagined sci-fi future - I especially liked the almost magical way math works. I am very eager to continue the series.

Flo (and B) had twins yesterday. Arthur and I and B's parents were down the hall in the waiting room as it happened. I was surprised to learn that I did indeed feel compelled to pace a little bit, as one used to see in the movies. It didn't take long - due to their positions, it was a scheduled Caesarean section, very efficiently done. Over quickly, but recovering will take Flo quite a while - it is major abdominal surgery, after all. So far so good.

I had a really excellent realisation today
that made a story click together so neatly it made it look planned
which is always very nice

but

in order to convey it to an audience
I would somehow have to unpack and explain
the super mega crossover of doom
running in my head now
for decades
(probably for life, but I don't remember what toddler me was writing. probably it had more talking animals in it back then.)

So I do not currently see how to make that story emerge
but it was really neat in my head...

Hello! I'm also primeideal on Ao3. This is an all-Stormlight Archive signup, and I'm requesting both fic and art for all ships! Some of the freeforms will lend themselves more to certain ships than others, but feel free to mix and match.

Requested ships:
  • Dalinar Kholin/Navani Kholin
  • Hesina/Lirin
  • Kmakl/Fen Rnamdi
  • Lunamor/Tuaka
  • Masha-daughter-Shaliv/Szeth-son-son-Vallano
  • Palona/Turinad Sebarial
  • Renarin Kholin/Rlain
  • Shallan Davar/Adolin Kholin

General art likes:
  • black and white art
  • bright/bold colors
  • traditional or digital art
  • objects that represent/are strongly associated with characters
  • fantastic/speculative worldbuilding elements
  • in-universe artifacts/sketches that the characters might have drawn (similar in spirit to the snippets between chapters, although I'm not expecting Shallan-level expertise!)

General art dislikes (please don't consider these binding DNWs: if your interests or preferences lie strongly along these lines then feel free.)
  • pastel-heavy palettes
  • deliberately wildly disproportionate/chibi-like characters
  • completely non-representational art
General fic likes:
Anything leaning into the weird worldbuilding, culture, and magic of Roshar! For this exchange, I'm mostly imagining something canon-compliant, but if you have AU ideas (Dalinar lives? Shallan and Adolin don't get separated?) feel free.

DNWs:
  • explicit sex (but fade-to-black or innuendo is fine), explicit depictions of genitalia in art
  • eye trauma
  • underage characters having sex
  • rape/noncon
  • second person POV (in "normal" prose, happy with it in IF or the like)
  • moralizing/didactic stories (characters Learning An Important Lesson about the value of tolerance, etc.)
  • non-canonical allegories of current events and/or contemporary politics (Dalinar complains about the squabbling princedoms: fine; Dalinar complains about the squabbling princedoms and this is a metaphor for the 21st century US Congress: no thanks.)
  • character bashing
  • cliffhanger endings
  • themes of cynicism or futility, or that the (canon's) main plotlines "are for nothing"

Requested Prompts:
  • Historical - Bard Immortalizes Wedding In Ballad To Couple's Delight Or Embarrassment
    • You know Wit would. And knowing him it would wind up as a traditional ballad in another place/time/somewhere else in the Cosmere. Or maybe the listeners adding to their traditional list of songs.
  • Supernatural - Familiar/Magical Companion's POV on Human's Spouse
    • Doesn't literally need to be from the other character's POV, but something about the developing relationships between the spouse and the spren/other being. Adolin and Pattern? Shallan and Maya? Masha interviewing Nightblood for her book? The Sibling and the Stormfather bickering about how humans are the worst, and now they're inlaws?
  • Wedding - Marriage Traditions in Different Cultures
    • Do peakspren ever show up to crash Horneater weddings? Palona is wearing a Herdazian marriage garment--more about that! What does a traditional Shin wedding look like for Masha and Szeth?
  • Wedding Ceremony - Magic-related accidents during wedding
  • A/B Read In-Universe RPF About Their Wedding
  • Epistolary media coverage/social media reaction/etc.
  • In-Universe Rumors About A/B Secret Marriage
    • These would work well for Dalinar/Navani. (Especially "oh no Dalinar can read now, so much for secret women's documents.") But also, are there rumors about Renarin/Rlain? What do the common people of Thaylen think of the Prince Consort?
  • Widowed - Marrying Sibling's Widow
  • Established Marriage - Old Married Couple
  • Established Marriage - Partners Can’t Keep Their Hands Off Each Other Even After Years Together
    • Fen and Kmakl definitely have this effect on people as they're pushing seventy.
  • Anniversary: Tenth
    • We know ten is a very important number in Roshar lore. For Palona/Sebarial, their anniversary will be right around the end of the "timeskip" between books five and six--what's changed on Roshar in that time? Shallan and Adolin's will be slightly earlier than that--are they celebrating even when apart, or is Shallan working on a completely different calendar by now? Navani reflecting on most of ten years without Dalinar? The other couples, presumably having somewhat more mundane times to celebrate in?
  • Proposal - Post-canon
    • I imagine Masha is the one who proposes to Szeth and it takes a while for him to be convinced "this is real, she doesn't see me as the Assassin in White, she knows who I am and loves me exactly as I am." But anything about how they got together!
  • Marrying for Love - Getting Married After Having Been Together For Many Years
  • Proposal - "We Could Be Dead Tomorrow So Let's Get Married Today"
    • Something finally convinced Palona and Sebarial that they should make it official. Is Sebarial just worried about the class difference, and all the other social changes convinced him it wasn't a big deal? Did they just want a really great wedding night before the battle of champions? What happened?
  • Wedding - First Legal Marriage Of Its Kind
  • Political Marriage - Emergency Same-Sex Marriage Exception to Avert Imminent War
    • We know that Alethkar/Urithiru has some form of same-sex marriage (Drehy and his husband), but maybe the idea of same-sex marriages (or formal long-term relationships in general?) is new to the listeners. Either way, Renarin/Rlain are going to get a lot of questions from both cultures. What happens then?
  • Wedding Ceremony - Watching A Friend/Family Member Get Married
    • Especially for Adolin/Shallan, there's so much going on there. How are Shallan's brothers feeling? Do they recognize Chanarach? What's going on with her? Adolin chose to wore Kaladin's gift sword among the dozens other gift swords he had--what's with that?
  • Established Marriage - Slice Of Married Life During Wartime
    • Lunamor and Tuaka have six kids--what's it like for her when she's waiting for news? Hesina and Lirin worried about their boys? Learning that they're going to have another baby and dealing with that shock during everything else that's going on? Being doctors at Urithiru?
  • Newlyweds - Helping New Spouse Settle Into Their New Clan/Village/City/Country
    • Hesina isn't originally from Hearthstone--what was the culture shock like for her? Where do Renarin and Rlain wind up geographically and what adjustments do they have to make?
  • Established Marriage - Expectant Couple Prepares for Baby
    • What are the pregnancy traditions for Horneaters? Hesina and Lirin, either earlier in their marriage with Kaladin and Tien, or later with Oroden?
Again, don't feel limited to these specific prompts, anything involving these characters and tropes will be great. Thank you for creating for me!

Yesterday morning Firefly and I went for our first real trail ride together.  Carrie  came over on Juno and we rode up the driveway, down Woodcutter's Ridge and then came back the same way.  On the way out Firefly was full of energy and wanted to either walk really fast or trot.  We walked, taking the lead on the trail.  On the way back Firefly was suddenly not so enthusiastic and strolled along.  Very like her, she loves getting out and always wants to do more.  It was a good ride.  Yes she is still pretty green and needs to learn a lot, but she never really put up a fuss.

In the afternoon M flew in from Alaska. On the way to Santa Rosa to get him I dropped off the pole saw, which is very broken.  It will get a complete tuneup and a quick look at the leaking chain oil chamber.  I also took one of the weed whackers down.  Darren fixed it on the spot, replacing a bent pin that was preventing the knob that selects for Off-Start-Run from working.  The machine also got a new plastic casing, as one part was destroyed.  While chatting with Darren I learned: fuel mix (the oily fluid I mix with gasoline to make two cycle fuel) does not go bad. Yes, I can use that container of fuel mix that is several years old.  Also learned that why one should keep a chain really sharp.  Dull chains drag through the wood heating up both the chainsaw bar and the motor. A sufficiently hot motor warps everything inside it and stops working.   Good sharp chains not only keep the saw cool, but they cut a heck of a lot faster.  I'm SLOWLY learning to hand sharpen chains in a reasonable length of time.

Chena is very, very glad to have M back.  He plays with her all the time.  I'm happy to have him here too.

What I've Read
Murderbot Diaries 2-4
(narrated by the wonderful Kevin R. Free ) - After last week, I went on a binge and re-read all the audiobooks: Artificial Condition, Rogue Protocol, Exit Strategy

By my count, this is the third time thru most of these books and they really truly do hold up. Incredibly keenly observed stories of Murderbot encountering people, making observations, and (against its will!) feeling things about them. It's so good.

Highlights: In Artificial Condition, meeting ART but also realizing about getting to have CHOICES and how that changes the relationship to its clients. In Rogue Protocol, being so jealous of the 'pet robot' Miki and how it gets to have people take care of it and that's not beneath contempt. In Exit Strategy, it's the line, "Please. They will kill her."

Lent by Jo Walton - I went into those novel knowing nothing and it just has blown me away. This book cannot be discussed truly without massive spoilers but it is so good I want to shove people at it anyways. I went in knowing basically nothing about it, so was incredibly impressed by the way the book unfolded and I do not want to take that away from anyone. So, I will give you what will not spoil it - this book treats Christian beliefs of the middle ages as hard fact and works from there to show a character trying to live a moral and meaningful life even tho he knows that he may be damned. The characters are so fucking good. I finished it this afternoon and I am going to have to re-read it again soon.

What I'm Reading
Fugitive Telemetry - Martha Wells, Narrated by Kevin R Free ( I know this is technically out of publication order , but I prefer it.)

PIP assessment

Jun. 18th, 2025 07:27 pm
[personal profile] cosmolinguist

I knew it'd be awful but the PIP assessment was really awful.

I've mostly had nice assessors in the past, which helps as much as anything can. But this one wasn't doing a good job of hiding her glee at her petty power over me. Mean-girl vibes.

When we told V we were having coffee and cake afterward, they expressed their approval and said they'd hoped I would be. I said I learned this from them the first time I had one of these fucking assessments and they went along with me: they had to buy me the cake after that because I was too poor to do it myself, so I remember it.

V replied: "They will not be allowed to take away our joy." Damn right.
