lunabee34: (sga: rodney by meticulous_chaos)
1. I had my interview for promotion to full professor yesterday. I feel really good about my application. Obviously, nothing is certain, but I am not anxious about it at all. Now to wait until April. :)

2. I listened to this NPR interview with Rhiannon Giddens about turning her ballad "Build a House" into a children's book, and you should, too. You should also listen to the song. It's an unflinching look at the African American experience, beginning with slavery, that highlights black resiliency and strength.

3. You should also watch the music video for Harry Styles's Music for a Sushi Restaurant. Holy shit is this a bit of homoerotic, monsterfucking gloriousness. Thanks to [personal profile] nyctanthes for the heads up.

4. You should read Experimental Protocol by [personal profile] anagrrl. It's a Rodney-centric AU of the SGA episode "Mortal Coil" that is full of the kind of creeping dread that's perfect for a Halloween read.

5. If you'd rather spend Halloween giggling, check out this political attack ad we received in the mail. I don't think it had the desired effect. I would love to live on planet Stacey. *g*
lunabee34: (sga: lorne gun b/w by drkcherry)
1. Okefenokee: Heavy and Precious by Janisse Ray
in The Bitter Southerner
You can also click just under the first picture and scroll down to hear Janisse read the article.

I am an enormous fan of Janisse's writing, and this is a wonderful introduction if you have never read her work before. The photography is exquisite as well.

2. The Irresistible Blueberry Farm by [personal profile] anagrrl
SGA
Lorne/Parrish

[personal profile] anagrrl wrote this for me after a delightful conversation in which she revealed that the actor who plays Lorne has starred in numerous Hallmark movies, one of which is called The Irresistible Blueberry Farm. LOL

When your promise is a temple, and the roof caves in by [personal profile] china_shop
Guardian
Summary: The Envoy is seriously injured by the explosion of Lin Yusen’s remains. Chu Shuzhi must protect him while he recovers -- and make sure no one finds out.
This gives me the warm fuzzies of found family. :)

Elegy to the Windings of the Sea by [personal profile] havocthecat
SGA/Vampire the Requiem AU
Elizabeth/Teyla/Kate
This is very cool. I don't know anything about Vampire the Requiem so that is not necessary to enjoy this story; I really like the worldbuilding here, and I really like this take on Elizabeth a lot.
lunabee34: (sga: mcshep red by meticulous_chaos)
Decision Point by [personal profile] esteefee
Stargate Atlantis
McShep, McKeller
This is a delightful story that feels like it was written during the height of the fandom; it is exactly the dynamic I want out of my McShep. It feels right and true, and there's such perfect dialogue. Keller is treated very well; I can't stand slash that bashes her, and [personal profile] esteefee acknowledges how important she is to Rodney and doesn't demonize her to make the slash work. This really hits the spot.

A Little Help by [personal profile] misbegotten
Good Omens
Aziraphale/Crowley
I really like the way [personal profile] misbegotten writes these two; the voices are impeccable, and this has just the right amount of humor alongside tugs on the heartstrings. I think the tag idiots in love says it all.
lunabee34: (sga: atlantis b/w by obaona)
After making my last post about Rodney McKay, I got a hankering to re-read some of the McShep classics.

Discussion of Freedom's Just Another Word and Written by the Victors )
lunabee34: (star trek: TOS ship by draculasheir)
Cutting for Stone (The Mason's Ballad); ST:DS9; Miles & Julian; implied Miles/Julian/Keiko; the show practically invites us to believe that Miles and Julian are madly in love with each other; I love fic where that love doesn't sideline Keiko

Quark's Day (The Noh-Jay Remix); ST:DS9; Nog and Jake on DS9 after the Dominion Occupation has been defeated; one of the best TV friendships ever depicted so beautifully here

Hallmark Moment (Here in the Morning Remix); ST:Reboot; Joanna McCoy; time travel and timelines and angst

Professional Jealousy (The Black Propaganda Remix); SGA; McShep; Rodney really hates Neil Degrasse Tyson. LOL

Alchemical Solution (Swish and Flick Remix); SGA/HP fusion; the team bonds in the Room of Requirement

Vids

This Will Always Be My Home by ManticoreEscapee
DS9
This vid features a shot from every single episode of DS9 and reminds me exactly why I love this Trek franchise the best.

Not Alone by LariGevaerd
NCIS
I just watched the episode where Tony tells Ziva she's not alone as she goes to bury her father. This vid feels like that moment but stretched out for the whole team. I love family of choice, *hard*, and this vid showcases that family dynamic.

Fic

Never Morning Wore by Blue Moony
HP
Remus/Ron; adult; long
In the aftermath of Hermione's death, Ron despairs. This is a deeply angsty fic, which y'all know I love, so don't go looking for a happy ending.

An Amiable Hock by [personal profile] executrix
Firefly
Simon/Inara; Adult but not explicit; short
Executrix has a gift for witty dialogue, and this fic is no exception. One of my favorite lines: Simon knew he would never be seventeen again. He was growing to believe he would never be twenty-seven, ever, so he felt all the more disposed to take advantage of whatever declining sexual powers remained to him. I also appreciate this story for the sharp character insights.

No Kidding by [archiveofourown.org profile] pir8fancier
SGA
McShep, Keller/McKay; Adult; long
John has a surprise!kid, and she sets Atlantis on it's head. I love kid fic, but you don't come across a lot where the kid's basically grown. I like surly, teenage Sheplet, and I love the way that she changes everything between John and Rodney.

Captain Trips Is Not the Name of an Air Force Officer by [archiveofourown.org profile] infinimato
SGA/SG-1 fusion with Stephen King's The Stand
What if some of our favorite Gateverse characters survived the superflu and converged on Boulder. I wish this had more than just the two parts. It's a fascinating idea.

Surfacing

lunabee34: (sga: atlantis blue by magicnosegoblin)
1. I've seen a meme. I want to meme! I haven't talked to y'all in forever. :) Meme goes something like--pick a pair of characters from one of my fandoms, and I'll tell you why I do or do not ship it. Since I pretty much ship everything, my answers will probably be more along the lines of, "This is how I see this pairing working." This is not a call for me to defend the most reedonkulus pairings ever or is it? .

2. We have decided to call Fiona's pacifier "Gibbs." LOL Every morning I tell her, "Let's see what Gibbs is doing," and then we are so sad when Jethro is not on the TV. So now, Feefers (yes, I know; *hangs head*; we do nicknames wrong around here) always has her Gibbs.

3. I have awesome friends! Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] lyrstzha and [livejournal.com profile] kaleecat for the birthday cards. Y'all are so sweet. I can't remember if I thanked [personal profile] executrix or not for the wonderful package she sent with the most amazing lip balm and the cutest little outfit for Fiona; if so, many thanks again, and if not, thanks for the first time. I also got a package from [livejournal.com profile] henrycat with some books on loan, the cutest little sweater for Fiona, and some candy from Japan. Emma has already dubbed the candy a success. :)

4. Have some NCIS recs!

When I started getting into this show, [personal profile] ariadne83 warned me that the fandom was full of woobie!Tony who's the victim of all sorts of rapery and abuse. Naturally, I immediately went looking for such fic. LOL

Damage by [archiveofourown.org profile] xanthe
Tony/Gibbs; NC-17 PLEASE HEED THE WARNINGS!
A current case leads the team to discover a tragedy hidden in Tony's past. This is well-written with everyone in character. Warms the cockles of my angst-loving heart.

Vacationing in Tel-Aviv by [livejournal.com profile] laytoncolt
Ziva and Tony-centric gen
Wow. This is just. Wow. I love this look at what makes Ziva tick and the lengths she is willing to go to.

Agent Afloat Atlantis by [archiveofourown.org profile] Mhalachai
Ziva-centric (I would call this gen, but there is a sexual encounter between Tony and Ziva as well as mentions of past Ziva/Jenny; it's certainly not shippy)
XOVER with SGA
Oh, man. This is fantastic. I love this look at Ziva as Agent Afloat on Atlantis in the aftermath of Jenny Sheppard's death. I would read story after story set in this 'verse.

1. Last night before collapsing on the floor in giggles, Emma gave me a "Mother's Day" card (oh, yes, those are air quotes, my friends) she had made on behalf of Fiona and herself. The front cover reads: "You are my Stargate." The message inside reads: "We came from your loving and caring womb (though your vigina is the Stargate) and into the fresh crisp air of the outside world." *dies laughing* What do you do with that?

2. Looks like SG-1 isn't streaming anywhere anymore, including Hulu Plus. :( Emma is being an obnoxious purist and wants to watch them all in order, but I'm afraid she's just going to have to miss out on disc 4 of season one.

3. Things We Trade for Free by [archiveofourown.org profile] jedibuttercup; SGA/BtVS XOVER; Ronon/Faith
This author writes a lot of really enjoyable Buffy crossovers, and this is no exception. Her Ronon and her Faith are excellently done, and I like that the story's a nice meaty length.

4. Another Way to Get It Done by [livejournal.com profile] thrace_; SGA; Keller/Carter; fpreg
Ah, that deliciously rare beast--the female impregnates another female fic. I love how Keller and Carter deal with the pregnancy and the way it changes their relationship.

FAVOURITE CHARACTERS: THE turn it on its head EDITION

Name a fictional character and I'll tell you three reasons I wouldn't want to date them.

Getting the Hang of Thursdays by Hayseed
HP; Severus/Hermione; long
I find this story extremely disturbing and uncomfortable to read. It's a version of the Groundhog Day trope (Snape and Hermione are forced to re-live the day she dies over and over and over again), but what I think I like the best about this fic is that the author is not afraid to make difficult choices and put the characters in situations that her readers are likely to rail against.

A Marital Education by [archiveofourown.org profile] yahtzee
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen; Elizabeth/Darcy, Jane/Bingley, other canon pairings
This is a lovely story, witty as you'd expect of Austen at her best, and also deeply human. Sometimes I think of Austen as the eroticizer of the mundane, and this fic fits right into that oeuvre. The basic premise of this story is that Elizabeth finds herself experiencing far less conjugal bliss than she'd imagined when she accepted Darcy's proposal. They work through it.

Five Have a Wonderful Time by [archiveofourown.org profile] verity
SGA; Ronon/Sheppard/Teyla/McKay; mpreg
I love the puppy!pile Team Fics of the Gateverse, but add in mpreg a trip back through the Gate to deliver the news to Jeannie, and you've got a recipe for Lorraine love. This made me tear up in the best way.

Demented'verse by [archiveofourown.org profile] hells_half_acre
HP/SPN XOVER; extremely and deliciously long; canon pairings
I am besotted with this series. It remains true to the canons of both sources and draws a variety of interesting parallels between the character casts. I cried some several times and also giggled and totally wish I was gonna get more. LOL

Up next, vid post! :)
lunabee34: (Default)
In Search Of by [archiveofourown.org profile] toft
Mythbusters; Jamie/Adam
What happens when the world ends, and the only person who seems to be left alive is your co-star? I am a sucker for a good apocafic, and this one really delivers.

I Am More Water than Land by [livejournal.com profile] calcitrix
SGA; Parrish/Lorne
This is essentially the travel narrative of one David Parrish, who finds his fate in the hands of a band of ragtag pirates. Gorgeous AU.

Under the Surface by [archiveofourown.org profile] winterstorrm
HP; Harry/Draco
What a wonderfully twisty little story. I don't want to give away any of the mystery, but the story does involve mpreg. :)

Survival of the Species by [archiveofourown.org profile] romaine
HP; Harry/Draco
Oh, lordy. MPREG and creatures and dragons and weird sex rituals ahoy. Basically Draco and Harry go on an expedition together and end up stranded together for years. I enjoyed.

I Have Seen Flowers Come in Stony Places by [archiveofourown.org profile] bridget
HP; Harry/Draco
So, this is the one where Harry accidentally gets pregnant with Draco's child while helping him and Astoria to conceive. Astoria is awesome in this fic.

Blood Red Sky by [archiveofourown.org profile] winterstorrm
HP; Harry/Draco
So, I've had this bookmarked for so long that I don't exactly remember what it's about, but there's mpreg! Yay!

Blaine Anderson and the Improbable Crossover by [archiveofourown.org profile] narceus
HP/Glee XOVER; (Harry)Blaine/Kurt
So, this is the one where Blaine is actually Harry Potter. Surprisingly angsty despite the premise.

Walking with a Ghost by [archiveofourown.org profile] kcstories
HP; Harry/Draco
So, I don't actually remember anything about this one either except for that I liked it. :)
lunabee34: (Default)
Stargate Atlantis

Still Shine Bright by [personal profile] havocthecat
Elizabeth/Kate; Big Bang length
I adore this story more than I can say. It features a strong Elizabeth who is willing to sacrifice everything to keep her people safe (or, you know, just Elizabeth LOL) and a romance that transcends time. I love the world-building here; Havoc's interpretation of the Ancients is very, very cool. I also got the most amazing drabble written FOR ME! BY HAND! ON A GORGEOUS NOTECARD! that is a timestamp of this fic. It is tacked up on my bulletin board now, so I can look up at it and squee from time to time. Srsly, read this story. So very, very good.

Five Things that Happened When the Women of Atlantis Grew Wings by [personal profile] havocthecat
Kate/Elizabeth, Cadman/Lorne
Just what it says on the tin, y'all. The dialogue here is spectacular.

Videos

How It Should Have Ended
I am not linking each of these individually, but I particularly enjoyed the Avengers, Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, Aliens, Beowulf, and Lord of the Rings videos.

Darcy Lewis: Not My Name by Trille Always

The Star Wars that I Used to Know by Teddiefilms

Avengers

Valhalla Blues by [archiveofourown.org profile] PlotDotOh
Phil/Clint, Peggy/Steve
This is one of the best fics I've read in a long, long while. The premise is that Phil dies before Clint and realizes that they won't be able to find each other in the afterlife unless he takes Valhalla in hand and wrests it into some semblance of order. This fic features an amazingly characterized Loki, Peggy being a badass and a half, and all the glorious angst you can dream of capped off by a happy ending.

Five Times Steve Knit Something and One Time He Refused To by [archiveofourown.org profile] kaitou
Steve/Tony, Steve/Peggy

A Very, Very, Very Fine House by [archiveofourown.org profile] wanttobeatree
Tony/Pepper, Tony/Steve
[This appears to be the first installment of a series, so keep your eye out for more even though this piece stands alone.] I love stories about how the Avengers become family; this is a good one.

Recs!

lunabee34: (star trek 09: old!Spock by whenisadoor)
Leave no Soul Behind by [livejournal.com profile] triwislinthis; Trek Reboot; Spock/Kirk; Adult; long
This is a glorious AU of what is already an AU. Kirk and the others are emergency medical personnel who travel around the galaxy mopping up the mess Nero leaves behind. I love this Kirk. I love the reasons he chooses to leave Starfleet. I love the burgeoning relationship between him and Spock. I adore Spock's characterization and how loved he is by his crew. I love the reversal of the power dynamic (Kirk is subordinate to Spock here), and I love the exquisite writing. Excellent, excellent read.

The Laundry Ultimatum by [livejournal.com profile] explodedpen; SGA; gen; medium
This is an extremely funny chronicle of the precarious life and times of the Atlantis laundry division. It's also a reminder that even the smallest aspects of life as a member of the expedition are fraught with danger and the potential for great harm.

Parenting, Pancakes, and the Professor by [archiveofourown.org profile] violet_quill; HP; Neville/Percy; PG-13; medium
Percy has been divorced for some time, and his son has begun attending Hogwarts where Neville is a professor. The slowly building relationship between the grownups is interspersed with letters from Percy's son about his life at Hogwarts and with George's good natured meddling. This is a really sweet and fun read.

The Herald by RaeWhit; HP; Snape/Harry; long
This is a very interesting story. Snape has completely left the wizarding world yet one day finds himself living next door to Luna Lovegood. I very much like the descriptions of Snape living on his own and of the interactions between Snape and Luna (who fascinates me here). I could kinda care less about the Snape/Harry which feels pastede on yay to me. The joy in this story is, for me, all about Snape and Luna's quiet friendship.
lunabee34: (hp: luna by so_severus)
Under Fire by [livejournal.com profile] busaikko; SGA; Dex/Mitchell, Mitchell/Sheppard, Dex/Mitchell/Sheppard, Teyla/Kanaan; Adult; medium
In this AU, Sateda controls Atlantis as a superpower of the Pegasus Galaxy. Earth doesn't get to call the shots and must recognize that its concerns aren't necessarily relevent to Satedan and Pegasus interests. I really, really like this story. It's from Ronon's POV, and his reactions to the Earth people (I say that like Cool Keith) are very interesting to me.

Work in Progress by [livejournal.com profile] ariadne83; H50; Danny/Rachel but mostly gen; PG; medium
I do not watch this show. I know nothing about this show. But I loved this story. It's based on the premise of coming out to a family in which your siblings have come out as queer long ago. It's very much about bisexuality and the issues that gay and straight people both have with it. It's about family, and it's about finding identity. Very good read.

Hermione Granger and the Amazing Outfits of Luna Lovegood by [livejournal.com profile] likeadeuce; HP; Hermione/Luna; PG; short
I love Luna far beyond the telling. She is strange and sometimes off-putting, but she speaks truths that are sometimes uncomfortable and sometimes just what one most needs to hear. She is unconventional and beautiful and comfortable with herself in a way that teenagers (hell, people in general) rarely are. This is really a character study of both girls, and it is finely done.

Five Women Who Hate Fleur Delacour by [livejournal.com profile] snegurochka_lee; HP; Fleur/Bill but mostly gen; PG; medium
Oh, man, I wish I had written this story. It is brilliant. Fleur is such an interesting character in canon. She's clearly magically superior or the Cup would not have chosen her for the Triwizard Tournament. She is clearly very brave as she Polyjuices into Harry along with everyone else, and she fights at Hogwarts. She also very fiercely loves Bill. One of my favorite scenes in all the books is when she tells Molly that all those scars on Bill's face mean is that he is brave. *chokes up just thinking about it* And yet, Fleur is kinda off-putting. She *does* put on airs and complain, and I detest reading dialogue so that part of her appearance in the books is tedious. This is a story about many of the unfortunate reasons women hate each other, and the author brilliantly undercuts them all. I think Tonks's vignette is the most thought-provoking and interesting. Also, more Luna! Whooooo!
