1. I have gotten a bounty of Christmas cards from [personal profile] goss, [personal profile] sallymn, [personal profile] spikedluv, and [personal profile] aurumcalendula!

I also got the most delectable and beautiful chocolate bar with dried figs on top from [personal profile] sheafrotherdon; a gloriously curated package from [personal profile] executrix full of books (including a collection of Beerbohm essays I can't wait to dive into), notebooks, a hand-knitted shawl, and other wonderful sundries; and a package from [personal profile] misbegotten with a Ouida sticker she designed, a makeup bag detailing the epic love story of Sam and Dean, bespoke stationery with my name on it, and other happies.

Thanks, all. Feeling the love! <3

I can't believe I forgot to tell you all the most surreal best part of the SACS conference: 8:30 in the morning waiting for the second general session to start in a room that can seat more than 9000 and will be close to full by the time the session starts at 9:00 while colored lights zoom around overhead and the sound system blasts to the gathered middle-aged academics, "I didn't come here to party / I didn't come here to stay / I came to leave with somebody / I only came for the cake." Ah, yes. Truly the jam of the administrator preparing her institution for reaffirmation and the development of a Quality Enhancement Plan. At 8:30 in the morning.

2. I want to wish a happy, belated birthday to [personal profile] amejisuto, my oldest internet friend--as in have known the longest, not biologically the oldest. LOL I think you edge out [personal profile] spikedluv, who I met around the same time, by just a matter of days.

I met [personal profile] amejisuto on the Unconventional Shippers Yahoo Mailing List where I was posting my very first fanfic, and she and Suki Blue (who has since left fandom) conspired together and made me a livejournal and got all their LJ friends to friend the journal and presented it to me a fait accompli. It was such a wonderful act of kindness; I don't know where I would be without fandom in my life, and I'm grateful to Ame for playing such a large role in getting me into this space.

I'm also grateful for her good humor, generosity, and unfailing kindness to others. Happy birthday, my friend.

3. I've started sending out my February mailings of <3 <3 <3 so be on the lookout. Plan is to get them all out this week. International people, expect yours to arrive by summer. LOL
lunabee34: (Default)
[personal profile] amejisuto asked: What one work of fanfiction would you take with you to a deserted island?

Probably the two fics I've read the most times in any fandom are A Nick in Time by Tira Nog and Theft of Assets, Destruction of Property by Helenish.

I made a long meta/rec post about A Nick in Time HERE, but the gist of it is that this fic (and it's sequel, which I still enjoy but which does not equal or surpass A Nick in Time) allows Harry and Snape to develop feelings for each other without any of the baggage they usually bring to the table. It's a de-aging fic which I almost universally loathe, but I absolutely adore the way Snape being turned into a child allows Ron and Hermione to make him part of their family in a way they never could the adult Snape. My favorite parts of this fic are actually about Ron and Hermione becoming fiercely protective of Snape rather than anything to do with Harry and Snape.

Theft of Assets is Draco/Neville, and it hits so many of my narrative kinks. Draco thinks he's not worthy of Neville; he's depressed and losing his magic. He tries so hard to make their relationship work, and he never knows what Neville is thinking until he finally does. It's just so lovely. Draco's internal monologue is wonderful; I love reading angsty stories with happy endings, and this fits the bill perfectly (although, let's be real, I sometimes wish Draco got a wee bit more abject in this story, but a girl can't have everything).

Critical StudiesCritical Studies by Ouida

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This collection of essays mostly consists of reviews of poetry and novels that I haven't read, so I can't comment on the strength or weakness of Ouida's literary analyses (although I will say that her unironic and constant use of limpid to describe writing she finds beautiful does give me pause).

What I find of value is her discussion of writing in general, her comments on science and technology, her characterization of the fin de siecle American and European, and her prescient ecological arguments.

Some of what Ouida has to say about the nature of writing is absurd--she tends to highlight flaws in others' work that abound in her own (this is not a woman who can point fingers at anyone for ridiculous character names, for example), but she makes some interesting arguments about the role of art and the artist in society and what's necessary to achieve good writing (spoiler alert: it's an innate gift and nothing which can be learned, a position with which I fundamentally disagree).

Ouida is anti-science, anti-technology, and anti-Progress in the Carlylean sense. She sees scientists as cruel monsters and technological innovations as dangerous, both in terms of the destruction of the natural world and the destruction of the human soul. It's hard to disagree with her about the effects of smog, for example, but she takes her antipathy too far in her complaints about the bicycle. For someone who spends a significant number of pages of this collection lamenting automobile and railway pollution alongside laments about the terrible treatment of horses, I have to wonder at her hatred of the bike which seems to me a natural solution to both problems.

She is concerned about the destruction of ancient architecture and green spaces in cities. She worries about the lack of regard for non-human creatures. She sees her world poised on a precipice of ecological disaster from which it may never recover. This is Ouida at her best--sometimes silly, sometimes disturbing (she is racist and sexist at times), but always deeply concerned about the world she lives in and making arguments that would not be out of place in a 21st-century discussion of those issues.

CalypsoCalypso by David Sedaris

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a return to form for Sedaris; Calypso is as funny and poignant as Me Talk Pretty and Naked.

In Calypso, Sedaris deals frankly with his sister's suicide, his mother's alcoholism, his father's advanced age and their fraught relationship, and his own approaching mortality. This is a really funny book, but Sedaris wrestles with guilt and anger and the difficulties of being a member of a family.

Highly recommended.

Frost in May (A Virago Modern Classic)Frost in May by Antonia White

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This book is really well written, but I struggled to read it because it made me sad. The life the girls live at the boarding school run by the nuns is so claustrophobic and repressed; the girls are under constant scrutiny, and the nuns are so cruel to them for any perceived sinfulness. It's hard to tell whether the nuns genuinely believe that enjoying something makes it wrong or if they are using their religious authority to be sadistic; it's probably a mixture of both. This book makes me feel so badly for these girls. It's upsetting, and the end is very upsetting. I can't fault the writing, but I would never read this again.

Quark's Day (The Noh-Jay Remix); ST:DS9; Nog and Jake on DS9 after the Dominion Occupation has been defeated; one of the best TV friendships ever depicted so beautifully here

Hallmark Moment (Here in the Morning Remix); ST:Reboot; Joanna McCoy; time travel and timelines and angst

Alchemical Solution (Swish and Flick Remix); SGA/HP fusion; the team bonds in the Room of Requirement
lunabee34: (hp: snape trouble by so_severus)
And this year, I'm actually going to read all the stories in the archive that interest me instead of just petering out halfway through. So there!

First up, Conversations with the Dead (The "Conversations with Yourself" Remix) is the remix of a story I wrote about Draco talking with Moaning Myrtle during HBP. Whoever wrote this remix is an absolute genius. It's from Snape's perspective, and he is an example of that ever-elusive canon!Snape that so rarely makes his way into fanfic (my own included. Snape is hard LOL). So many lines in this fic are completely quotable; I'd have to C&P the whole thing. I can't wait until the reveals because I want to read everything this person has written.

Other Recs:

It's a Special Kind of Thing; Angel the Series; Angel-centric gen; Liam as a boy learning about the confluence of pleasure and sin

Half a Phoenix (The Out of the Past and into the Future Remix); Avatar: tLAB; Zuko's daughter visits her grandfather and it is glorious

Any Ending that May Seem to Come; Dark Is Rising; Will and Jane's daughter after both her parents have died--so bittersweet (is there any such other way to write a DIR fic?); lovely lovely

Here are the wonderful stories I was given for Christmas this year:

Seven and a Half Cents by [personal profile] executrix
Firefly
Inara/OFC, Simon/Jayne
Exec is aces at writing a true caper fic. She always comes up with fun and interesting jobs for the crew, and this fic is no exception to the rule. The voices ring so true in this story, making it a pleasure to read from beginning to end. An Exec story is always a wonderful mix of humor and cutting commentary with shrewd character observations. What makes this so special to me is that she wrote the story for me when she realized I'd gone out on the Yuletide pinch hit list. *sniffle* Seriously awesome friendage going on there.

Something Thicker than Water by [personal profile] hwc
Harry Potter
Dudley/OFC
Dudley contacts Harry after years of silence, and with some trepidation, Harry decides to meet with Dudley at his home. I love that this story focuses on the ways that the Dursley's mistreatment of Harry shaped both Harry and Dudley. I love that Dudley is redeemed in a believable way that bodes well for a future relationship between him and Harry. I especially love that HWC wrote such a nuanced and complex story for me on such short notice. <3

For Yuletide, I received Feminine Bravery .
Golden Girls
Blanche/Rose
I am so impressed with this story, especially since it was written on such short notice as a pinch hit. I can tell the author really spent some time thinking about what I like in a fic. It's canon compliant, slotting neatly into the space after an episode. It showcases the fearlessness that the women of the show so routinely displayed, and is a wonderful demonstration of how vital and interesting wonderful life can be after 60. Excellent gift and one more jewel in the embarrassment of riches I received this year.

Not Alone by LariGevaerd
NCIS
I just watched the episode where Tony tells Ziva she's not alone as she goes to bury her father. This vid feels like that moment but stretched out for the whole team. I love family of choice, *hard*, and this vid showcases that family dynamic.

Fic

Never Morning Wore by Blue Moony
HP
Remus/Ron; adult; long
In the aftermath of Hermione's death, Ron despairs. This is a deeply angsty fic, which y'all know I love, so don't go looking for a happy ending.

An Amiable Hock by [personal profile] executrix
Firefly
Simon/Inara; Adult but not explicit; short
Executrix has a gift for witty dialogue, and this fic is no exception. One of my favorite lines: Simon knew he would never be seventeen again. He was growing to believe he would never be twenty-seven, ever, so he felt all the more disposed to take advantage of whatever declining sexual powers remained to him. I also appreciate this story for the sharp character insights.

No Kidding by [archiveofourown.org profile] pir8fancier
SGA
McShep, Keller/McKay; Adult; long
John has a surprise!kid, and she sets Atlantis on it's head. I love kid fic, but you don't come across a lot where the kid's basically grown. I like surly, teenage Sheplet, and I love the way that she changes everything between John and Rodney.

Captain Trips Is Not the Name of an Air Force Officer by [archiveofourown.org profile] infinimato
SGA/SG-1 fusion with Stephen King's The Stand
What if some of our favorite Gateverse characters survived the superflu and converged on Boulder. I wish this had more than just the two parts. It's a fascinating idea.
lunabee34: (sg1: hammond by casett)
1. Why am I still pregnant? *inarticulate noises of frustration* For the love of all that is holy, please to be getting out of me soon, child. LOL

2. I have been uploading all my fic to AO3, and it has been very gratifying to get kudos and comments on stories I wrote years ago. I'm trying not to just spam any particular fandom as I know it's highly annoying to click on a fandom tag and slog through a page or two of fics from the same author (especially if it's an author you don't care for). I think I've got about 80 more fics to upload.

3. I am revising my opinion of SG-1 on this rewatch with Emma. I have only seen the show through once--the early seasons via Netflix and then the final season as it aired. I had remembered the early seasons as being almost unbearably bad (the finales of both season 1-2 are clip shows? really?), but that's clearly not the case. The show is much stronger and more cohesive from the get-go than I remember it being, and I hadn't realized how many really important episodes and character arcs are portrayed in these early seasons. I've always enjoyed the show, but I'm discovering a new-found appreciation.

4. Game of Thrones Ultimate Birthday Rap Battle
This amused the hell out of me, particularly Jon Snow and Ser Jorah.

5. January Girl by [archiveofourown.org profile] parenthetical; SPN/HP XOVER; Dean/Luna
The Tori Amos song the title comes from is perfect for Luna, and I love seeing early-era SPN Dean interact with the crew from Hogwarts. Fun read.

6. Your Baby is My Supermagnet (My Baby is Your Drug) by [archiveofourown.org profile] unforgotten; X-Men First Class; Charles/Erik; MPREG; ~50,000 words

Pan-fandom meta vid of awesomeness. Not all fandoms of ever are represented here nor is every fan's fannish experience, but as I fangirl a lot of the source material, it really resonated with me. FAVOURITE CHARACTERS: THE turn it on its head EDITION

Name a fictional character and I'll tell you three reasons I wouldn't want to date them.

Getting the Hang of Thursdays by Hayseed
HP; Severus/Hermione; long
I find this story extremely disturbing and uncomfortable to read. It's a version of the Groundhog Day trope (Snape and Hermione are forced to re-live the day she dies over and over and over again), but what I think I like the best about this fic is that the author is not afraid to make difficult choices and put the characters in situations that her readers are likely to rail against.

A Marital Education by [archiveofourown.org profile] yahtzee
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen; Elizabeth/Darcy, Jane/Bingley, other canon pairings
This is a lovely story, witty as you'd expect of Austen at her best, and also deeply human. Sometimes I think of Austen as the eroticizer of the mundane, and this fic fits right into that oeuvre. The basic premise of this story is that Elizabeth finds herself experiencing far less conjugal bliss than she'd imagined when she accepted Darcy's proposal. They work through it.

Five Have a Wonderful Time by [archiveofourown.org profile] verity
SGA; Ronon/Sheppard/Teyla/McKay; mpreg
I love the puppy!pile Team Fics of the Gateverse, but add in mpreg a trip back through the Gate to deliver the news to Jeannie, and you've got a recipe for Lorraine love. This made me tear up in the best way.

Demented'verse by [archiveofourown.org profile] hells_half_acre
HP/SPN XOVER; extremely and deliciously long; canon pairings
I am besotted with this series. It remains true to the canons of both sources and draws a variety of interesting parallels between the character casts. I cried some several times and also giggled and totally wish I was gonna get more. LOL
