This American Life episode 141: A Whole New World. Transcript by NaomiK
This American Life
Hermione Granger, Steve Rogers, and Susan Pevensie are all interviewed by the NPR show. Probably my favorite fic I've read thus far in the archive. Excellent.

Now Is Time for Later by Musyc
Belgariad/Mallorean series
Durnik/Polgara on the eve of their wedding; so sweet and wonderful
lunabee34: (yuletide: yuletide is love by liviapenn)
The Larks, Still Bravely Singing, Fly
The Secret Garden
This story is so beautiful--Mary and Colin and Dickon during the World War and coming again together at the end to heal. Lovely.

Owls in the Garden
The Secret Garden XOVER with Harry Potter
This is one of my favorite stories so far in the archive this year. I don't want to spoil it too much, but it is just sniffly goodness.

The Sensible Approach
Sense and Sensibility
In this wonderful post-canon fic, Elinor struggles to reconcile Edward with his horrid family.

Years Out
A Separate Peace
How does Gene deal with Finny's death years after? This is really beautifully written and haunting.

Sleeping Beauty
Oh my, this is awesome. I have always wondered why Maleficent behaves the way she does, and this imagines a thoroughly unexpected reason for her doing so.

toast and tea, sunshine and shadow
Sleeping Beauty
This is another of my top picks so far this year. It's an AU setting that reads like J.K. Rowling by way of Patrick Rothfuss; the story explains why Maleficent curses Aurora, and I really like the explanation the author comes up with. This is a great story.

Ghost Hunters
Northanger Abbey
Catherine, some several months older and wiser, is determined to school her neighbor against her flight of fancies to hilarious results.

An Unlikely Heroine
Northanger Abbey
In which Catherine learns more than she ever wanted to know about murder. I love how clever Catherine is here and how brave.

I still have SPN and X-Men 1st Class to read; maybe I can get through them before the reveals. :)

Tears Like Diamonds on the Ground (The "Someone to Carry You" Remix); Tonks in Auror training with Mad-Eye Moody as her mentor

Step after Step; Madam Pince/Madam Hooch; this is spectacularly good; my favorite story so far

And all we need of hell (The "sometimes it lasts in love but sometimes it hurts instead" Remix); in which Ginny is a stone cold badass

Whip Therapy (Naming the Problem Remix; Ginny/Harry; Ginny/Millicent; this is exquisitely done; What if Ginny doesn't really want to marry Harry, not really?

Crucio (The Test of Loyalty Remix); what makes Peter turn to the Dark side?

I Walk, I Trust, With Open Eyes; Narcissa and Draco while Lucius is in Azkaban; continuing my love of fic about mothers and motherhood
lunabee34: (star trek: TOS ship by draculasheir)
Cutting for Stone (The Mason's Ballad); ST:DS9; Miles & Julian; implied Miles/Julian/Keiko; the show practically invites us to believe that Miles and Julian are madly in love with each other; I love fic where that love doesn't sideline Keiko

Quark's Day (The Noh-Jay Remix); ST:DS9; Nog and Jake on DS9 after the Dominion Occupation has been defeated; one of the best TV friendships ever depicted so beautifully here

Hallmark Moment (Here in the Morning Remix); ST:Reboot; Joanna McCoy; time travel and timelines and angst

Professional Jealousy (The Black Propaganda Remix); SGA; McShep; Rodney really hates Neil Degrasse Tyson. LOL

Alchemical Solution (Swish and Flick Remix); SGA/HP fusion; the team bonds in the Room of Requirement
lunabee34: (hp: snape trouble by so_severus)
And this year, I'm actually going to read all the stories in the archive that interest me instead of just petering out halfway through. So there!

First up, Conversations with the Dead (The "Conversations with Yourself" Remix) is the remix of a story I wrote about Draco talking with Moaning Myrtle during HBP. Whoever wrote this remix is an absolute genius. It's from Snape's perspective, and he is an example of that ever-elusive canon!Snape that so rarely makes his way into fanfic (my own included. Snape is hard LOL). So many lines in this fic are completely quotable; I'd have to C&P the whole thing. I can't wait until the reveals because I want to read everything this person has written.

Other Recs:

It's a Special Kind of Thing; Angel the Series; Angel-centric gen; Liam as a boy learning about the confluence of pleasure and sin

Half a Phoenix (The Out of the Past and into the Future Remix); Avatar: tLAB; Zuko's daughter visits her grandfather and it is glorious

Any Ending that May Seem to Come; Dark Is Rising; Will and Jane's daughter after both her parents have died--so bittersweet (is there any such other way to write a DIR fic?); lovely lovely

Josh, Emma, and I got to hang out with [ profile] crazydiamondsue, her husband, and their son last night on their way back to OK from Disney World. I love Sue to death, and it was great to see her and her family again. :)

I got a card from [ profile] talitha78 today. <3

Here are the wonderful stories I was given for Christmas this year:

Seven and a Half Cents by [personal profile] executrix
Inara/OFC, Simon/Jayne
Exec is aces at writing a true caper fic. She always comes up with fun and interesting jobs for the crew, and this fic is no exception to the rule. The voices ring so true in this story, making it a pleasure to read from beginning to end. An Exec story is always a wonderful mix of humor and cutting commentary with shrewd character observations. What makes this so special to me is that she wrote the story for me when she realized I'd gone out on the Yuletide pinch hit list. *sniffle* Seriously awesome friendage going on there.

Something Thicker than Water by [personal profile] hwc
Harry Potter
Dudley contacts Harry after years of silence, and with some trepidation, Harry decides to meet with Dudley at his home. I love that this story focuses on the ways that the Dursley's mistreatment of Harry shaped both Harry and Dudley. I love that Dudley is redeemed in a believable way that bodes well for a future relationship between him and Harry. I especially love that HWC wrote such a nuanced and complex story for me on such short notice. <3

For Yuletide, I received Feminine Bravery .
Golden Girls
I am so impressed with this story, especially since it was written on such short notice as a pinch hit. I can tell the author really spent some time thinking about what I like in a fic. It's canon compliant, slotting neatly into the space after an episode. It showcases the fearlessness that the women of the show so routinely displayed, and is a wonderful demonstration of how vital and interesting wonderful life can be after 60. Excellent gift and one more jewel in the embarrassment of riches I received this year.

This Will Always Be My Home by ManticoreEscapee
This vid features a shot from every single episode of DS9 and reminds me exactly why I love this Trek franchise the best.

Not Alone by LariGevaerd
I just watched the episode where Tony tells Ziva she's not alone as she goes to bury her father. This vid feels like that moment but stretched out for the whole team. I love family of choice, *hard*, and this vid showcases that family dynamic.

Never Morning Wore by Blue Moony
Remus/Ron; adult; long
In the aftermath of Hermione's death, Ron despairs. This is a deeply angsty fic, which y'all know I love, so don't go looking for a happy ending.

An Amiable Hock by [personal profile] executrix
Simon/Inara; Adult but not explicit; short
Executrix has a gift for witty dialogue, and this fic is no exception. One of my favorite lines: Simon knew he would never be seventeen again. He was growing to believe he would never be twenty-seven, ever, so he felt all the more disposed to take advantage of whatever declining sexual powers remained to him. I also appreciate this story for the sharp character insights.

No Kidding by [ profile] pir8fancier
McShep, Keller/McKay; Adult; long
John has a surprise!kid, and she sets Atlantis on it's head. I love kid fic, but you don't come across a lot where the kid's basically grown. I like surly, teenage Sheplet, and I love the way that she changes everything between John and Rodney.

Captain Trips Is Not the Name of an Air Force Officer by [ profile] infinimato
SGA/SG-1 fusion with Stephen King's The Stand
What if some of our favorite Gateverse characters survived the superflu and converged on Boulder. I wish this had more than just the two parts. It's a fascinating idea.
lunabee34: (sg1: hammond by casett)
1. Why am I still pregnant? *inarticulate noises of frustration* For the love of all that is holy, please to be getting out of me soon, child. LOL

2. I have been uploading all my fic to AO3, and it has been very gratifying to get kudos and comments on stories I wrote years ago. I'm trying not to just spam any particular fandom as I know it's highly annoying to click on a fandom tag and slog through a page or two of fics from the same author (especially if it's an author you don't care for). I think I've got about 80 more fics to upload.

3. I am revising my opinion of SG-1 on this rewatch with Emma. I have only seen the show through once--the early seasons via Netflix and then the final season as it aired. I had remembered the early seasons as being almost unbearably bad (the finales of both season 1-2 are clip shows? really?), but that's clearly not the case. The show is much stronger and more cohesive from the get-go than I remember it being, and I hadn't realized how many really important episodes and character arcs are portrayed in these early seasons. I've always enjoyed the show, but I'm discovering a new-found appreciation.

4. Game of Thrones Ultimate Birthday Rap Battle
This amused the hell out of me, particularly Jon Snow and Ser Jorah.

5. January Girl by [ profile] parenthetical; SPN/HP XOVER; Dean/Luna
The Tori Amos song the title comes from is perfect for Luna, and I love seeing early-era SPN Dean interact with the crew from Hogwarts. Fun read.

6. Your Baby is My Supermagnet (My Baby is Your Drug) by [ profile] unforgotten; X-Men First Class; Charles/Erik; MPREG; ~50,000 words
I am a sucker for angsty mpreg, and this fits the bill quite nicely.

This post is in response to the Fandom Appreciation Challenge hosted by [personal profile] china. Check it out; you can still participate in previous days' challenges. Today's challenge is to rec three fanworks that are more than 6 months old.

Rain in a Dry Land by Squirmy
HP; Ron/Hermione, Hermione/Harry, Percy/Oliver, Percy/Ron/Oliver; Incest warnings
This is a dark and twisty little story. I love the way Percy is characterized here, so cold and calculating. *shivers*

What Should Have Been by [ profile] iwasanartist
HP; Percy-centric; Miscarriage
Arthur discovers some things about Percy that he hadn't been aware of. Again, not a fluffy fic.

All Through the Night by Casira
HP; Remus/Sirius
This is one of my very favorite Marauders Era fics. It's set at Christmas time and Sirius keeps hearing the most lovely and haunting voice singing carols but he can't figure out who's singing them. The carols are used to such beautiful effect here. I always find this story so moving.

A re-imagining of Cinderella as a gay guy. With bonus Janice Dickinson!

The Adventure by [ profile] greensilver
HP; Neville-centric
Makes me tear up, y'all. This is everything I want to say about how awesome Neville is. OMG, little baby Neville standing up to the Trio and all the images over the "I can't live, I can't breathe unless you do this with me part." *happy happy sob sob* And I love the conceit of the vid that what is to come is running through the Hat's mind as it makes its decision about where to sort Neville. This might be my favorite HP vid ever.

We Didn't Start the Fire by [personal profile] scribe and [personal profile] fiercynn
Pan-fandom meta vid of awesomeness. Not all fandoms of ever are represented here nor is every fan's fannish experience, but as I fangirl a lot of the source material, it really resonated with me. I also appreciate the extraordinary amount of work it must have taken to match each lyric to an image from a source text of the relevant time period.
lunabee34: (spn: dean gun closeup by dev_earl)

Name a fictional character and I'll tell you three reasons I wouldn't want to date them.

Getting the Hang of Thursdays by Hayseed
HP; Severus/Hermione; long
I find this story extremely disturbing and uncomfortable to read. It's a version of the Groundhog Day trope (Snape and Hermione are forced to re-live the day she dies over and over and over again), but what I think I like the best about this fic is that the author is not afraid to make difficult choices and put the characters in situations that her readers are likely to rail against.

A Marital Education by [ profile] yahtzee
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen; Elizabeth/Darcy, Jane/Bingley, other canon pairings
This is a lovely story, witty as you'd expect of Austen at her best, and also deeply human. Sometimes I think of Austen as the eroticizer of the mundane, and this fic fits right into that oeuvre. The basic premise of this story is that Elizabeth finds herself experiencing far less conjugal bliss than she'd imagined when she accepted Darcy's proposal. They work through it.

Five Have a Wonderful Time by [ profile] verity
SGA; Ronon/Sheppard/Teyla/McKay; mpreg
I love the puppy!pile Team Fics of the Gateverse, but add in mpreg a trip back through the Gate to deliver the news to Jeannie, and you've got a recipe for Lorraine love. This made me tear up in the best way.

Demented'verse by [ profile] hells_half_acre
HP/SPN XOVER; extremely and deliciously long; canon pairings
I am besotted with this series. It remains true to the canons of both sources and draws a variety of interesting parallels between the character casts. I cried some several times and also giggled and totally wish I was gonna get more. LOL

Up next, vid post! :)

In Search Of by [ profile] toft
Mythbusters; Jamie/Adam
What happens when the world ends, and the only person who seems to be left alive is your co-star? I am a sucker for a good apocafic, and this one really delivers.

I Am More Water than Land by [ profile] calcitrix
SGA; Parrish/Lorne
This is essentially the travel narrative of one David Parrish, who finds his fate in the hands of a band of ragtag pirates. Gorgeous AU.

Under the Surface by [ profile] winterstorrm
HP; Harry/Draco
What a wonderfully twisty little story. I don't want to give away any of the mystery, but the story does involve mpreg. :)

Survival of the Species by [ profile] romaine
HP; Harry/Draco
Oh, lordy. MPREG and creatures and dragons and weird sex rituals ahoy. Basically Draco and Harry go on an expedition together and end up stranded together for years. I enjoyed.

I Have Seen Flowers Come in Stony Places by [ profile] bridget
HP; Harry/Draco
So, this is the one where Harry accidentally gets pregnant with Draco's child while helping him and Astoria to conceive. Astoria is awesome in this fic.

Blood Red Sky by [ profile] winterstorrm
HP; Harry/Draco
So, I've had this bookmarked for so long that I don't exactly remember what it's about, but there's mpreg! Yay!

Blaine Anderson and the Improbable Crossover by [ profile] narceus
HP/Glee XOVER; (Harry)Blaine/Kurt
So, this is the one where Blaine is actually Harry Potter. Surprisingly angsty despite the premise.

Walking with a Ghost by [ profile] kcstories
HP; Harry/Draco
So, I don't actually remember anything about this one either except for that I liked it. :)

When Fics Take on a Life of Their Own by [ profile] storiesfortravellers
Feminist Ryan Gosling; X-Men First Class
This is a spectacular piece of meta in which Ryan Gosling agrees to beta McAvoy/Fassbender slash. Extremely funny and thinky both.

Fear and Guilt are Sisters by [ profile] sistermagpie
Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
Theo leaves Hill House, but she can't quite leave the experience behind. Atmospheric and lovely with a wonderful undercurrent of dread.

The End and the Way by [ profile] Luzula
Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. LeGuin
This explores the gender and sex issues laid out in the book in greater detail. In a society in which all but the rare few are able to switch between male and female, what about those few who are locked into one gender?

HP recs )
lunabee34: (yuletide: kitty by chomiji)
Nobody Cared by [ profile] etherian; HP; gen-mostly; long long long long gloriously long
This is a classic "Snape discovers that Harry is really a pitiful and abused little boy and becomes a father to him" story. I really liked seeing the way the first book might have played out under this scenario and the ways that Harry's relationships stayed the same or changed. Love the Malfoys in this.

A Night in the Ruins by [ profile] natlet; Deadwood; Sol/Seth; short; Adult
I think this fic captures so nicely the tension that I imagine for this pairing--a deep need and friendship between them and also a very clear sense of the danger of caring for each other erotically and of the other obligations of their lives which would prevent such a union. Beautifully, achingly written.

Getting to Know You by [ profile] miss_pryss; Die Hard; McClane/Farrell; Adult; medium
This author is a seasoned Die Hard writer, turning out consistently awesome stories in this fandom. I'm not a huge fan of established relationship stories in this fandom because for me the whole delicate getting together process is the draw for me. This story more than delivers. Nice humor as well.

Wicked Wiles by [ profile] blue; Snow White; Grumpy-centric gen really; short
I love the insight into the lives of dwarfs, their rituals and their lore. I love the gender exploration the fic engages in. I love that this is a bit of an Anne Sexton take on the notion of the happy ending which is in turn turned on its head. Nothing not to like here. Very thinky.

China in Your Hand by [ profile] shewhoguards; Discworld; Tiffany Aching and Granny Aching gen; short
I think the Tiffany Aching books are the finest things Prachett has written and this story very much belongs with those books. It just a slice of life, Granny thinking about Tiffany and a gift she's given her. It's quite delightful, tinged with just a bit of melancholy and then the most wonderful sense of joy.

Invisible by [ profile] miss_lanyon; Beauty and the Beast; OC/Beast; medium
This is told from the perspective of the invisible servants who must attend the beast. Really interesting look at the original fairy tale. Deftly written and perceptive.

For Kathy by [ profile] alpheratz; Never Let Me Go; Kathy/Tommy(Ruth); short
I just finished reading this book like a day before Yuletide went live and I was ecstatic at finding a story. I don't want to spoil the book because it's one long mystery that slowly unravels, but this fic captures the angst and the injustice and the weary resignation and the futile dreaming that characterize the novel. Really, really nicely done.
lunabee34: (yuletide: squee by liviapenn)
I am home! Finally! We had an excellent trip (Christmas haul post forthcoming) with very little drama which is almost unheard of for our families. LOL We have guests coming tomorrow, so I will be spending the rest of the night cleaning and packing away our awesome new gifts (and also finishing the last half of the column that was due today *headdesk*).

But I did carve out a little time to read some Yuletide. I'm always traveling over Christmas and so I never feel like I get to properly participate in Yuletide. By the time I get a chance to really read anything in the archive, the reveal is already over.

Y'all, I got TWO GIFTS in Yuletide this year!!! I cannot contain my delight. Both of them are wonderful Star Trek: Deep Space Nine stories that I can't wait for you to read.

Son of a Preacher Man chronicles Jake and Nog's relationship through all the permutations we see on the show (mischief, Jake's role as teacher, Nog's entrance into Starfleet) and then adds a romantic element we don't see on the show. There's hurt/comfort, the best sentimental gesture Nog could ever make to Jake, and all in all, I am besotted with the story. :)

Cutting for Stone is a wonderful exploration of the relationship between Julian and Miles. That pairing is practically canon, and I love the way this Anon doesn't dismiss Keiko or vilify her while still acknowledging the depth of feeling that Julian and Miles share. The writing here is exquisitely lovely with gorgeous grace notes scattered throughout. This was a Madness Treat and so has very few comments as of yet. Go rectify that, y'all. :)

This was a fantastic year for DS9. There are fifteen stories in the archive proper (fifteen!), and I haven't even checked out Madness yet. My favorites of the other stories include Immortal, a beautiful and perceptive character study of Jadzia as she pursues Joining; Collaborators, a gen piece about the unexpected forms resistance can take; One Ordinary Week with Party Hats, which is chock full of excellent and funny dialogue, the best holosuite program ever, and a Julian who is his usual eager self in his quest to give Garak the best birthday party ever; Ask, a Miles/Julian story that has Keiko instigating the whole thing (love, love, love when Keiko is an integral and accepting part of a slash relationship between those two); Simulacrum, a lengthy piece (how do people write this much and so well in such a short time? *awe*) about Mirror!Verse Miles and his experiences with two Julian Bashirs.

Recs in Other Fandoms )

And one more rec, which although not part of Yuletide, I am considering as part of my holiday haul as [ profile] counteragent wrote it just for me: Untitled Luna drabble that perfectly encapsulates the things I love about that character. Love love love love love.
lunabee34: (hp: luna by so_severus)
Occam's Razor by [ profile] joanwilder; HP; Harry/Draco, Harry/Severus; long; Adult
This is an extremely interesting fic in which Harry and Draco find Snape's portrait and develop a relationship with the slain potion's master. Very cool use of canonical magic and a nice look at wizarding portraits and how they function. Also hot.

Memorium by Aesop; HP; gen; long
Wow. This is one of those fantastic stories that examine a part of canon we take for granted--of course, Muggles are Obliviated when they come in contact with the wizarding world, both for their protection and the safety of magic users. What if that isn't true, though. What if in addition to being grossly unethical, Obliviation is also highly dangerous? Can't recommend this one highly enough.

Repetition is a Form of Change by [ profile] DoctorSyntax; HP; Percy/Oliver, Percy/Neville; medium
I really like stories that humanize Percy, that look for explanations for his behavior beyond, "Percy is a berk." The deep rift between Percy and his family is not so easily overcome, and this fic just aches.

She's got no future (just a life to endure) by [ profile] mosca; True Blood; Pam/Jessica; Adult; short
Oh, hells yes. This is extremely awesome, maybe the most awesome thing of ever. Pam and Jessica together is like an unstoppable force of hotness. Many lovely character insights.

Thwarted by a Mystical Puzzle by [personal profile] afewsmallrepairs; HP/Good Omens XOVER; Luna-centric; short
This fic imagines Luna as a second Anti-Christ. *loves*

100 Things Crowley Would Do Before the World Ended by [ profile] Shewhoguards; Good Omens; long; PG
Just like all the best fics centered around Azriphale and Crowley, this one is funny, more than a little heartbreaking, and pretty much entirely about how this duo needs each other.

Cut and Fucking Paste by [ profile] crimsonclad Trek Reboot; Kirk/Spock; short; R for language
This is really funny and a nice take on the whole "mindmeld opens up possibilties" for Kirk trope.

Light Unshone by [ profile] liadan14 HP; Charlie/Draco; Adult; Medium
After the war, the Weasleys are grieving, Draco's trying to survive, and somehow Draco and Charlie find a way to make life after Voldemort work at a dragon preserve in the Scottish Highlands.

Close Enough by Helenish; HP; Harry/Ron; Adult; long
Nobody writes HP like Helenish. I wish Helenish wrote HP all the time. There is so very little Harry/Ron out there (which shocked me to my very bones when I first started dipping my toes in the HP waters), and this is such a fine example of how amazing that pairing can be. This is set after the War and features a relatively fucked up Harry and clueless Ron.

Careful Where You Touch by [personal profile] dira; SG-1; Sam/Vala; PG; short
Vala understands the rules that govern how she and Sam must behave in public, but the secrecy is sometimes painful. Vala and Sam come out to the team. Yay, teamfic!

If You're Quick, For a Kick, You Can Pick Up a Christening by [personal profile] executrix; Firefly; Mal/Simon; medium
This is wedding fic as only Exec could write it, laugh out loud funny and deeply sweet. Wash shrugged. “Good things get better, bad get worse. Wait, I think I meant that in reverse. If you have problems, it doesn’t take them away. And there are special separate problems. There was that whole you could set your watch by Mal getting hysterical thing, but I guess he can’t make a thing out of it considering that he’s marrying you. I guess if you do make an honest man out of him, that could be a problem, unless you have some smart vocational ideas?” Simon shook his head. “I can recommend the married state heartily,” Wash said. “I mean, when you first came here, I didn’t think of you as someone I’d want to spend the rest of my life with, but then, I’m not the one who has to. Also, when you’re married, they can’t make you testify against your…against the person you’re married to.”

Froodian Slip by [personal profile] executrix; Firefly/Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy XOVER; short
I've never read Hitchhiker's Guide, and this fic makes me wish I had because I know this story would be even more awesome. Exec has a gift for character voices and this fic is no exception. If you want some wry humor, this is the fic for you.

Stealth Nanny McPhee by [personal profile] ariadne; H50; Steve/Danny; short
I don't even watch this show and I'm in love with this story. If you like sweet and happy with awesome dialogue, you won't be disappointed.
lunabee34: (hp: neville dh battle by now_ennui)
I Wish I Was James Bond by [personal profile] kuwdora; DS9; Bashir-centric
I like the way this vid interweaves the lighthearted fantasy of spy-dom that Julian plays at in the holodeck with the much more serious and dark reality of Section 31. Very nicely done.

I Can't Hear the Music by Settiai; DS9; Kai Winn-centric
The lyrics of this song are absolutely perfect for Winn. I love the way this vid highlights her moral turpitude while also making her sympathetic and revealing how tortured she is. Excellent character study.

You've Got a Friend by llintrek; DS9; Jake&Nog
I adore this friendship so much. When Sisko catches Jake teaching Nog how to read, my little heart clenches every single time. I love that their friendship persists into the future (or at least one possible vision of it in "The Visitor"). In many ways, they are the heart of the whole show to me, the ones who grow and change the most, and the ones whose bond is arguably the closest.

J&J Tribute by DeepSpace9Fan; DS9; Julian&Jadzia
I think that what struck me the most on this rewatch of DS9 is how much Julian really loves Jadzia and how fond she is of him. He begins as this incredibly green and naive and irritatingly young doctor who is used to women falling at his feet and being with beautiful women and OF COURSE he's interested in Jadzia. If you're not interested in Jadzia then you're broken in a way Lorraine can't help. LOL And then they actually become friends and over the years, his love for her becomes real and true and deep and abiding and about much more than how sexy smart and sexy hot she is. They do so many little quiet scenes with him after she gets with Worf and then after she dies, and his grief is palpable. Frankly, it's hard to watch. It hurts. And what makes it even so much more poignant is that Ezri tells Julian it could have been him, that she could have loved him, that she DID love him. *sniffle sobs*

Deep Space Nine (was Terok Nor) by GhastlyH
This is an awesome filk set to the tune of "Istanbul (was Constantinople)" by "They Might Be Giants." This would be fun to sing en masse at a con. :)

How Harry Potter Should Have Ended by HISHEdotcom; HP
This is very silly and also contains an element of yes please. :)

A Tribute to the Last Weasley Twin by Mirrorcat21; HP; George Weasley-centric
This is haunting. I love how the video constantly cuts to an image of an alone and bereft George, looking mighty pensive. Excellent use of black and white footage; the lyrics are soul-slaying given George's circumstances. Really well done and heart hurty.

Never Had a Dream Come True (Fred Weasley Tribute) by iamobsessedandproud; HP; Fred Weasley-centric
And by contrast, this vid on the same thing makes me laugh because it's about how everybody is in love with Fred. Even Ginny, I think. And possibly Molly. *gigglesnort*

Not Alone by ; HP; Death Hallows Part 2-centric
All the little moments of connection and togetherness in the midst of terrible and horrible tragedy. This makes me tear up every damn time I watch it. Harry and Snape, Hermione telling Harry she'll go with him (Oh god I love that difference in the movie, that she KNOWS, SHE KNOWS OH MY FRICKING HEART). This is one of my favorite vids period.

Lights Will Guide Me Home by Dazzlem7 HP; Ron/Hermione
Excellent use of voice-over, beautiful dark filter over everything. Lovely character study of Ron. I love the refrain--lights will guide you home--and how literally true that is given that he finds his way back to Harry and Hermione through the Deluminator.

Your Biggest Fan by [ profile] wistful_fever; SPN; Sam&Dean
I really like this vid. It's from the perspective of a pretty fucked up Dean (so, you know, Dean) who can recognize his own sacrifices but not Sam's. He's a martyr and very resigned to his martyrdom here. It defines him completely. This vid is quite dark, but somehow manages to be charming at the same time. It's probably all the grin shots interspersed throughout.

Someone Like You by Adele
Y'all, the first time I heard this song, I sat in the driveway until it was over and wept because it hit me in that visceral place, that place that cannot imagine what it would be like if Josh died or left me and I can just see myself trying to find someone like him and failing and it hurt in a way that a song hasn't hurt me in a long time, maybe since Mogwai's "New Paths to Helicon Pt. 2" or Ryan Adams's "Withering Heights" or Tori Amos's "Playboy Mommy" (or if I'm totally honest, "Holes in the Floor of Heaven." Don't judge me. I grew up in the country, okay.)

reveal this information to the world at large, but it's amazing what a glass of pinot grigio will do for a girl on her favorite night of TV. (Well, Tuesday and Sunday can duke it out LOL)

Y'all, I have spent like three days reading Dark Memories by Blueowl and I was enjoying it. It is not the most gloriously written story of ever. You will find no stellar metaphors or exquisite turns of phrase. But I really liked the plot. It's novel. The Horcrux in Harry's head gives him Voldemort's memories which gives him knowledge and power, which is way better than Harry being the most bestest wizard of ever because he's the heir of Merlin and also Jesus. Makes sense, even canonically. And then. And then. LIKE 80,000 WORDS INTO THE STORY HARRY MAKES A SENTIENT TEDDY BEAR THAT SPENDS THE REST OF THE 80,000 WORDS RIDING AROUND ON HARRY'S LEG AND SOMETIMES PUNCHING THEODORE NOTT IN THE FACE AND TURNING RANDOM RAINBOW COLORS. Why? Why? Why in your perfectly interesting story would you make a prominent character who is a TEDDY BEAR? I did not sign on for Teddy Bear. I know I am an old lady but surely even the fourteen year olds of are not into Teddy Bears. IDK, my BFFs.

Josh just asked me if we're all full of the Holy Spirit does that make us Horcruxes for Jesus. *pets him*
