lunabee34: (hp: snape trouble by so_severus)
And this year, I'm actually going to read all the stories in the archive that interest me instead of just petering out halfway through. So there!

First up, Conversations with the Dead (The "Conversations with Yourself" Remix) is the remix of a story I wrote about Draco talking with Moaning Myrtle during HBP. Whoever wrote this remix is an absolute genius. It's from Snape's perspective, and he is an example of that ever-elusive canon!Snape that so rarely makes his way into fanfic (my own included. Snape is hard LOL). So many lines in this fic are completely quotable; I'd have to C&P the whole thing. I can't wait until the reveals because I want to read everything this person has written.

Other Recs:

It's a Special Kind of Thing; Angel the Series; Angel-centric gen; Liam as a boy learning about the confluence of pleasure and sin

Half a Phoenix (The Out of the Past and into the Future Remix); Avatar: tLAB; Zuko's daughter visits her grandfather and it is glorious

Any Ending that May Seem to Come; Dark Is Rising; Will and Jane's daughter after both her parents have died--so bittersweet (is there any such other way to write a DIR fic?); lovely lovely

A Stitch in Time Mansfield Park
In this fic, Edmund realizes his feelings for Fanny far too late. This is short and melancholy.

Symmetry Mansfield Park; very non-explicit sibcest
As one commenter to this fic states, who deserves a Crawford but a Crawford? LOL The dialogue here is wit at its best. *loves*

Snow and Mirrors Northanger Abbey
Northanger Abbey has long been my favorite Austen novel, and this fic does its whimsy and humor such justice. Catherine is such a fun heroine--head in the clouds and ready to see a ghost or a vampire around every gothic corner. Here, Nonny wonders, what if Catherine is right?

all over these eyes a storm is rolling over Dark is Rising
Oh man. Wow. Just wow. This story is about a Jane who remembers when others do not, a Jane full of power and potential, a Jane who is alone and yet perhaps not entirely. Such a beautiful story.

Guns'n'Neuroses Frasier/SPN XOVER
OMG, this is the best thing ever! What if Niles and Frasier discovered the truth of things that go bump in the night? Saving people, learning things, the family business--you know. LOL
lunabee34: (fandom is my fandom by laurashapiro)
The Gorgoneion (The Epyllionic Remix)
Medusa/Athene; Medusa/Poseidon (non-graphic non-con)
OMG, somebody freaking wrote epic poetry for Remix. Way to pull out all the stops, Anon..

Turnings (The Simple Gifts Remix)
Dark is Rising; Ellen-centric gen
This fic takes a peripheral character and turns her into something real and beautiful and complex, something more vital than Cooper's narrative could perhaps contain.

Through the Wardrobe (The Three Worlds Remix)
This is all kinds of fantastic. Of course, the Jossverse, Narnia and Dr. Who have to intersect on a ley line somewhere, right? *loves*

The Effects of Proximity: The Sleight of Hand Remix
Holmes/Watson
I know very little about asexuality, only what the denotation of the word itself implies, and so, for me, this is an astonishing and beautiful love story. Gorgeous prose. Wonderful read.

Best-Laid Plans
SG-1; Sam-centric gen
Anon Remixer makes me cry tears of Teamy Goodness and Love. These are the holidays, the way SG-1 spends them.

Fair Play
SG-1; Vala and Teal'c-centric gen
Lord do I have me an unholy love for Vala Mal Doran. [Vala] watches for a while longer. "Or he could seduce Luke Skywalker, they could run away together, and they could leave saving the galaxy to people who are actually good at it." "That opinion is not unrepresented on the Internet," Teal'c says, but he doesn't sound like it's one that he shares.

Face on a Milk Carton (the rules of the universe remix)
Farscape/Torchwood XOVER; gen
I don't watch Torchwood and even I know how awesome this is. Snappy and fun.

Dance in the Snow (The Chiana Was Here Remix)
Farscape; Gen
I love John and Chiana's relationship in canon, how she'd clearly like to be more than friends (or at least get a leg over) and he's never going to see her as anything other than a little girl he loves. Such a good Chiana character study.

Everyone in Their Places (Jumping to Conclusions Disco Hustle)
Farscape; Chiana-centric gen
What does Chiana think of Moya's crew when she first meets them? Fascinating stuff, super sharp character insights.
lunabee34: (yuletide: star on tree by liviapenn)
Okay, this officially sucks. Because we travel over the holidays, I can't do Yuletide reading like I want to until we get back and then it's almost time to go back to work and my interest wanes. I only made it through the first of the D's in the archive, and I doubt I'll do any more reading there for a long time. *sad face* Do you think my family will accept that as a valid excuse not to come home for Christmas?

Behold a New World by [livejournal.com profile] trobadora
Coldfire gen
This is Damien and Tarrant in the aftermath of the series and it is truly a lovely read.

Reservoirs by Gramarye
Dark is Rising Gen
What an interesting bit of Welsh history and of characterization for Bran.

thou fond deceiver by silveronthetree
dark is rising gen
Bran starts to remember.

Auld Lang Syne by stellar_dust
Dark is Rising Bran/Will
Besotted. Wee tad anachronistic with the language but yayness!

Three From the Track by Aria
Dark is Rising
I love this slice of pre-canon life of Merry with the Drews. Reads like straight out of the novels.

Loving Bonds by Elizabeth Culmer
Dark is Rising; Blodwen Rowlands gen
What a masterpiece, truly, to make Blodwen a real and actualized character, three dimensions and somewhat sympathetic. This is astonishing and so very welcome given the way the novels fail us in that regard.
lunabee34: (yuletide: yuletide is love by liviapenn)
Brotherly Affection by Bangles; Importance of Being Earnest; Earnest X 2
This is so funny and the voices are so authentically Wildean.

Cloak and Dagger by Adaptation Decay; Fairy Tales
Y'all know how much I love reworkings of fairy tales and I love what the author has done here with this version of Little Red Riding Hood. It is many things at once: cutting commentary on gender roles and on urban encroachment, creepy as fuck, and infinitely sad. Excellent read.

Cold Dawn by GrayCardamon; Dark is Rising;
When [livejournal.com profile] thelastgoodname and I read this series, one of the things I liked the least was the way that Will must be alone at series' end. He has to bear everything alone. This is the ultimate fix it fic and an interesting twist on what the end of the series really means.

Dirty Laundry by Curtana; Venture Brothers
I don't want to give away the emotional crux of this fic, but I will say that a long forgotten secret comes to light. I will also say that this fic made me laugh out loud and that I could see the action happening in an actual episode of the show.

Fanfare, Fanfiction and the Fourth Wall by Casey; Boston Legal
I freely admit that I've only seen one or two episodes of this show; at some point I want to Netflix and watch them all from the beginning. But even with very little familiarity with the source material, I found this hysterically funny.

Five Kindnesses Charles Emerson Winchester III Performed (but would never acknowledge) by Amilyn; M*A*S*H
Just what it says on the tin. *sniffles*

Five Ways Omar Remembers Brandon by Rustler; The Wire
I am currently slogging my way through The Wire (one disc into season 4) and I am so impressed with the way this fic has captured the voice and the tone of the show. This is gritty and raw and oddly sweet, as Omar always is. What I love most about this show is that it makes you care about and sympathize with these people who are absolute shitheads (on both sides of the law) and when an episode is done you are angry and amused and your heart hurts and you can't wait to pop another one in. That's how this fic makes me feel.

Five Deals the Robot Devil Almost Made by Sionnain; Futurama
Didn't this happen on an episode? Tales of Interest, anybody? LOL

In His House at R'lyeh (Squid of the Baskervilles) by Scott; Neil Gaiman's A Study in Emerald
This story is in Gaiman's Fragile Things and is one of the best pieces in that collection. It is perfectly evocative of the Victorian period, of Sherlock Holmes, of the Cthullu mythos and of Lovecraft all at once. It is at once the most wonderful homage to horror's antecedents and an intriguing story in its own right. This fic is more light hearted than the source and is a wonderful read.

In Which Worlds Collide and Eeyore Investigates a Terrible Crime by Torch; Winnie the Pooh and Discworld XOVER
Do I even need to say anything about this? Dude, read.

It's A Nice Day (For A White Wedding) by Livia; White Christmas
I love this movie. I love it. I have watched it every Christmas since I was in the womb and I love the music and all the dancing and the clothes and yeah. I'm a sap for this movie. This fic reminds me of all the reasons why.

Learning is Fundamental by Kweevil; HLOTS
Baltimore's finest are asked to make presentations to the cadets at the academy. Hijinks ensue.

Left Behind by Karabair; HLOTS
I love Megan Russert; she is an amazing character who is serverly underutilized in the series. This is a quiet throwaway moment between Tim and Megan in the diner that is incredibly revealing and insightful.

Man and Legend by Lady Sarai Robin McKinley's Outlaw of Sherwood
I loved this book growing up; it's such an interesting version of the Robin Hood story. What I love about this fic is that it gives us Marion's POV in a pivotal moment in the book. This is powerful.
