Once again, I got the most fabulous prompt. [profile] thearrogantemu asked for scenes of daily life in Marie's abbey. What are some of the strange dreams or vocations that flourish there? Extra bonus for focus on the details of some particular craft or work as part of the abbey's life - pottery, blacksmithing, manuscript creation, accounting, botany... So I got to have fun doing a little research into the kinds of glazes that would have been used on 12th-century English pottery (although you can't really tell since it's just half a line LOL) and 12-century English names for women. It's just a vignette, a very short slice of life--almost a tour of the abbey as Marie mentally walks through the grounds; however, it's also a rumination on power and the way that monastic life has allowed Marie to wield it in a way she never would have otherwise.

John can feel the weight of something Matt can’t, or won’t, say. He thinks about Nakatomi, and how even sleeping in his own bed had been impossible most nights, and how a strange bed in a strange place would probably have made his heart pound. The pieces slot into place - Matt didn’t come to John’s because he lacked a fucking bed. He came to John’s because John was there.

Later, looking back – in those moments when she was conscious enough of herself and of back to look back, which were rare – Lydia Grady thought maybe she was being punished for being dumb. 1. Thank you, everyone, for your comments on my Disaster Post. I am not going to answer individual comments on that post, but I have read and treasured them all.

2. The leak is fixed, the carpet is up, the floor is drying, and everything is going to be okay. It is annoying, and having the house all out of order is making me neurotic (I like everything neat and in its place), but as far as disasters go, this one could have been much worse. Looks like we're going to be able to get a floor down and everything set to rights before the semester starts, and looks like it's not going to be as expensive to repair as I had feared, so *crosses fingers*.

3. My mouth is still hurting from the temporary crown. The internet tells me this is to be expected (for up to two weeks possibly!), but I'm annoyed and can't shake the fear that something is actually wrong. If it is still hurting next week, I'll call the dentist, obviously. But it's very annoying. The dentist didn't tell me what to expect either, so that's also annoying, and I think I exacerbated it all by beginning to eat normally the next day. I'd have babied it for much longer and not had expectations that it would be basically fine the next day if they'd explained it more. Also, I'm a paranoid human, so ah. *cries*

4. Have a Yuletide rec:

Escape from the Citadel (you find your way to come back around)
Montero Cinematic Universe
The Nas-bot's story: where he came from, who he's visiting, what he wants. (Love.)

Robots, robot freedom fighters, insightful critique of celebrity culture and media: excellent read.

5. I met my Goodreads goal, and I only cheated a wee smidge! Right there at the end, I had Fiona read a few picture books aloud to me so I could hit 100. LOL But that totally counts.

Another delight in which Tarrant plays the piano and Hesseth is discomfited by human ways and Damien has a moment of insight about Tarrant; it's a missing scene character study that is deftly drawn.

5. Over Thanksgiving break, my mom showed me how to boil eggs in the instant pot, and y'all I am a convert. I am now a card-carrying member of the Church of Instant Pot Boiled Eggs. I will never again boil eggs any other way. These were new eggs. NEW FREAKING EGGS. And they peeled up like Spike shucking his duster for Buffy. Every yolk perfectly centered and perfectly yellow. Mom said every single egg she puts in the instant pot comes out like that every single damn time. It is the Rapture, my friends! No more shall I abrade my thumbs upon the shells of eggs that break off a micrometer at time only to reveal a pockmarked and hideous surface that cannot be served to guests but only devoured in the pantry in secret shame. No more shall I suffer the horror of the lopsided egg or the yolk with the dreaded Ring of Ick. Oh frabjous day!

Seriously, it's pretty awesome.

1.songstowearpantsto This site is awesome. Andrew writes songs to *your* specifications. You can request a free song (which he may or may not write depending on his mood; he appears to most often fulfill requests that are either really silly or very challenging) or haggle prices for a paid song. I found this site after watching this Supernatural vid on YouTube. Be sure to listen to "Shoot the Zombies" (I defy you not to sing this all day like a freak), "Celtic Techno Burrito," "Bow Down to My Pwnzorness I Guess," "It's too Loud," and "I am Bjork." I'm trying to think of a clever request of my own that he might honor.

2. Andy has put together a rough version of our movie! It lacks sound in some places (we gotta redub some of it) and a couple of special effects, but it's essentially done. And OMG, I am in love with myself. LOL Shocking, I know. I'm really proud of this thing y'all. It's funny and sad and there's erotic tension liek!whoa. *grins like a loon*

3. Supernatural Thursday! With a new episode! Wooooooooooo! Why is it not on yet? LOL

Y’all I have had the worst day ever. Ever I say. It began with my husband taking my keys with him accidentally to his work so that I couldn’t go teach this morning and then culminated in my dialup being so fucktarded that I couldn’t download this dissertation prospectus that I needed to edit by this afternoon; I had to drive into town and get a paper copy to edit. I had a little meltdown that may or may not have involved much screaming and also fists of rage on the mattress and walking across campus with a snotty nose. PURLEASE cheer me up. *bats eyelashes*
