End of an Era--Harry Potter Tribute by eeks1120
"Don't you ever wonder what will happen when it end? How can we let go of the ones who we call friend?" *sniffle* This is the best kind of fan song--it really *gets* what it is to love a book deeply and wholeheartedly and the sort of bittersweetness that comes when a series ends. The vid is perfectly edited to match the lyrics. The part over the bridge where it shows many of the fallen slays me. This is destined to become a classic that will be around for a long time, I think.

Draco's Milkshake by AndieHeartsYou143
Oh, it brings all the boys to the yard. And it's better than Potter's and Snape's and, well, you get the idea. :) This makes me grin like a loon.

I Swear by [personal profile] dualbunny; Smallville; Clark/Lex; MPREG OMG
Looks like the streaming is down, but you can still dl. I love this kind of vid where a completely different story is woven from existing footage. At the end of this vid, I truly believe that Clark and Lex are the parents of one adorable CatBaby. This is the bestest kind of crack of ever.

Secret Agent by llintrek; women of Star Trek
I love this vid. First, it's got the subject matter going for it. Not enough love for the ladies of Trek to ever suit Lorraine. :) Secondly, the song is fantastic. She's a sinner (cue Kai Winn); she's a saint (cue Edith Keeler). LOL I also really, really like that this doesn't showcase only the big name ladies; there are some unexpected faces in this vid, and I really like that.

I Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper by llintrek; women of Star Trek
Another fun vid in the same vein as the previous. I LOVE LIKE BURNING the implication here that all the ladies of Star Trek are queer! Yay! OMG the femslash possibilities in this vid. Deanna/K'Ehlehr, anybody?

Heroes by llintrek; DS9
I love the tone of this vid. It begins with all the holosuite adventures the crew has and their venture back to Kirk's Enterprise. And then there's a subtle tonal shift. Interwoven with all the fantasy heroics are the crew actually being heroic and leaning on each other. It's extremely emotionally affecting.

Whedonverse Women--So What by Valamd
This is just what it says on the tin, Whedonverse women kicking ass and taking names. I like the way this vid revels even in the villains, the way it acknowledges how awesome ALL the ladies of the Jossverse are. From Harmony to Saffron to Faith to Lilah--yay! I hesitate to call this vid redemptive because I don't think it's about excusing or redeeming any of these characters but rather glorying in them as they are. Pun intended.

Slytherins: Riding Dirty by AccioBook7
I have a very special relationship with this song in that I find it endearingly ridiculous and cannot help but sing along. This video contains high quality footage (which, sadly, I often find not to be the case with Star Trek and HP vids on Youtube; some of the cleverest vids I've seen are virtually unwatchable because the footage quality is so poor, which is a shame), really tight editing, and is a fun watch.

The Extended Stay Series by missparker; Voyager; Janeway/Paris; Adult; long
For the intial grousing I did about this pairing, I have come to love it. Missparker does such a wonderful job of acknowledging all the issues between the two characters--age, rank, family history--all while giving the reader an excellent romance. This fic supposes that Paris, Janeway, Tuvok and Chakotay get stuck in the past on Earth for a very long time, allowing their relationships to change.

In Her Own Image by [livejournal.com profile] lamardeuse; Voyager; Janeway/Michael Sullivan; Adult; medium
I love this fic to pieces. I love Michael's growing awareness and agency. I love how conflicted Janeway is about what she feels for a hologram. I love that these feelings push the boundaries of her personal ethics since she actually tweaks his program and then has to deal with the consequences. Excellent read.

Celestial Navigation by missparker; Voyager; Paris/Torres, Paris/Janeway; Adult; long
This is what happens when Tom and B'Elanna's marriage falls apart (without demonizing B'Elanna, which is very important to me!). I hesitate to call this a domestic fic, and yet, that's just what it is. Janeway and Paris making a home together, at first without realizing it and then consciously, because they want to. OMG, read everything missparker writes. LOL You will not be displeased.

Stillife by pir8fancier; HP; Harry/Draco, Harry/Snape; Adult; long
After he dies, Snape's portrait comes to be in Harry's possession. But this portrait is different from all the others--more lifelike, more connected to the here and the real. Draco agrees to help Harry uncover the mystery. This has a little bit of everything in it--wry humor, angst, hot sex, twisty plots. Great read.

Harry Potter in 99 seconds by Paint; HP; vid
This is really silly. These kids have great voices, and the song cracks me up--it's so melodramatic and over the top. I love it.

Vid for LFO's Freak
I think this is the actual vid for the song and not a fanmade production. This vid is well, freaking creepy and awesome. The song is so catchy and good, and the vid makes me uncomfortable in that good way. Go, watch!

Lost and Found by ELG; Buffyverse; Wesley-centric gen; Adult; warnings for rape and torture
I really, really love this story. It's been months since I read it, so my rec will likely not do the story justice. After Wesley loses Connor and Angel tries to kill him, he attempts a spell to send him back in time and stop himself from making that terrible mistake. Instead, he ends up in an alternate dimension where the people he cares about most torture him unspeakably. The story begins with a very pissed off Angel finding a half-dead Wesley on the steps of the Hyperion, and follows Wesley's journey back into the fold. Very, very emotionally satisfying read; wonderful h/c.

So What by LadyArachnea; Voyager vid; Janeway
The quality of the footage is not always great on this vid, but I adore its message. The song begins, "a thousand eyes are watching," set to footage of Kirk and Archer and Picard, and then the vidder shows us just exactly how Janeway flips the script around. Nice girl power vid.

Convergence by Nokomis; HP; Millicent Bulstrode/Neville; G
I really like that in this short fic, Millicent and Neville find a bit of common ground. If JKR had made the Slytherins actual people instead of evil caricatures, they might be a little like this Millicent.

Forget by [livejournal.com profile] cjmarlowe; HP; Snape/Neville; PG-13; mediumish
Snape/Neville is probably the least likely pairing to emerge from HP, but this is a Snape/Neville that I can believe. After the war is over, Neville is harder and angrier and just as bitter as Snape ever was, and Snape finds himself intrigued. I like fics that acknowledge that people, especially children, can't just kill and watch others be killed and tortured and come away from that experience unscathed.

What Separates Us by [livejournal.com profile] swtalmnd; HP; Draco/Harry; Adult; long; references to sexual abuse of children (all off-screen)
This is an Old Skool HP Draco/Harry romance. Harry makes a mistake in potions class that creates a kind of bond between him and Draco; romance ensues. The Slytherins here are also more finely and realistically drawn than in canon. They don't want to die or follow Voldemort, and Draco is their leader. This is essentially fluffy and fun with very little angst (despite the warning).

And Also Laughter by [livejournal.com profile] swtalmnd; HP; Remus/Weasley twins; Adult; long
I like the way this author writes the Weasley twins as a package deal. Here, they collectively want Remus, but are afraid that his discovery of the nature of their relationship has damaged even their friendship, much less destroyed any chance of a threesome. Much of this show takes place in the joke shop, and I really like this closer look at how the shop runs and the kind of items it sells.

Because It Is My Heart by [livejournal.com profile] magnetic_pole; HP; Petunia Dursley/Alice Longbottom; medium; PG-13
This is an intriguing little story. What if Petunia and Alice met while Lily was at school? What if they fell in love? This follows canon in some respects and diverges in others. The end of this story is completely and wonderfully ambiguous; I don't want to say too much and spoil the story, but I love that the author isn't really clear about what's going on. It's a strangely hopeful and liberating ending, considering.

The Death of Narcissa Black by [livejournal.com profile] massicot; HP; Gen; Adult for images of violence and sex
This is truly unique and beautifully done. It's the story of how Narcissa Black becomes Narcissa Malfoy, mostly told in gorgeous watercolor. I love that Narcissa Black is both exactly who we think she should be based on canon and also so so so much more. This is a harsh and painful story, and the end hurts.

Marching On by dazzleme7; HP
This is the best love letter to the Harry Potter series I think I've seen. This is about family, family of origin and family of choice, and most of the characters get a moment in the limelight (Yay, Neville and Luna! All the Fred and George bits kill me. *sniffle*) This is about solidarity and standing together and nobody really being alone. The vid uses footage from all the movies, including trailer material from Death Hallows Part 1, and the vidder has put this beautiful filter over everything that puts everything in high relief and makes all the images look very stark. It's visually beautiful to look at, I love the song, and it makes me tear up watching all the characters we so love march on toward their destiny. Basically, this is genius, pure and simple.

lunabee34: (fandom is my fandom by laurashapiro)
Just about every day, I take a look around lj and think, "I get to hang around these people for free? Wow." I am surrounded by some of the smartest, funniest, most clever people--and let me not forget, kindest and most generous while I'm at it. Sometimes it boggles my mind that so many exceptionally good writers are just one mouse click away from me at all times. Y'all make me feel lucky and grateful. Here's what a handful of you have been up to lately.

Famous Brown Raincoat by [livejournal.com profile] executrix; Firefly; Mal/Zoe; Wash/Zoe; PG-13
Among executrix's many gifts is the ability to tell a hell of a backstory. I love this picture of Zoe and Mal following the war, of the minutiae of the lives of two people putting themselves back together. I love Zoe's voice here--how plainspoken and unapologetic she is even as she's apologizing. And mostly I love that River gets to save them all this time.

Let's Give 'Em Something to Talk About by [livejournal.com profile] ariadne83; SG-1; Cam/Sam but mostly gen; PG-13
Ariadne is one of the most thoughtful and insightful writers I've ever read. Her understanding of character motivation is unparalleled, and she has a way of spooling out tiny plot points in canon to the far-reaching consequences that escape me sometimes as a viewer. This is the story of how Cam and Sam's marriage fails, and they learn to be friends. The voices are amazing here (Lorne in particular brings a grin to my face), and the end is pretty much the definition of perfect.

In Imitation of Apples by [livejournal.com profile] possibly_thrice; Good Omens/Trek Reboot XOVER; Chekov-centric gen; PG
P3 is a genius, pure and simple. To call her a wordsmith somehow reduces the magic she makes to mere craft, and believe me, y'all--the way she puts words together goes far beyond the limitations of craft. I think she's the most evocative, sensual writer I've ever read anywhere, not just fandom. Her fic just begs to be read aloud (by Alan Rickman LOL). Sometimes I get chillbumps when I read her work; I *always* get jealous. In this fic, Chekov meets Azriphale and Crowley and it is GLORIOUS!

Apocalypses I Have Known by [livejournal.com profile] lyrstzha; Non-fiction
I love Lyr's stories. I love the way she sees the Buffyverse, the way she writes the ensemble cast of Firefly, the way she lets me imagine Dean interacting with the world of Babylon 5, but I never love her writing so much as when she's writing about herself. This piece is, in a word, exquisite.

Absumption by [livejournal.com profile] drsquidlove; Voyager; Paris/Janeway; Adult
This fic does not fit the category of lately, but thanks to the timelessness of the internet, it's as new to me as if it was written yesterday. I was introduced to the Doctor through hir Buffy fic (specifically Giles/Xander), and I was struck by hir skill with characterization and plotting. The Doctor tells a damn good story. So when I discovered that the Doc had written Voyager fic, I was pretty much beside myself with joy. This is a riff on the episode "Timeless," and it is just as angsty and heartrending as you might imagine. The depiction of grief and shock in the wake of the accident is particularly fine.
lunabee34: (star trek: TOS ship corona by from_the_c)
Just Like Camping by Oparu; Janeway-centric gen; PG; short
What a lovely bit of character work this is. When Voyager's waste and water management systems need a complete overhaul, the crew is forced to use two large bathrooms BSG-style. And what a wonderful vehicle for character commentary, for those lovely little grace notes that make this fic such a delight to read.

Whoever Saves a Single Life by Nyssa23; Lewis Zimmerman-centric gen; PG; short
Short reflection by the creator of the EMH on the value of his life's work. Nice bit of backstory and character work.

Learn the Ropes by Mercurie; Seven and Naomi Wildman centric gen; PG; short
This snippet of conversation between Seven and Naomi is so poignant and chilling as Seven considers the impact their friendship might have on Naomi.

Much Too Long by Oparu; SGA XOVER; Janeway/Elizabeth Weir; PG-13ish; short
This is pretty much entirely dialogue driven, and Oparu has captured their voices perfectly as they commiserate over what being a leader forces them to leave behind. (Hint! It starts with S and ends with EX) This fic is the definition of fun; guaranteed to bring a smile to your face.

Supernatural- Ain't no Sunshine by garfield2424
First, I love Eva Cassidy's version of the song. So haunting. I like the cuts between shots in the opening scene, and I like how whenever the brothers are in the same scene, one is immediately foregrounded and the other fades into obscurity. Even when they're together, they're alone. And then the song turns, and over the refrain of "I know, I know, I know, I know, I know," we see Sam and Dean together, talking it out, being brothers--only to have it all ripped away again.

lunabee34: (reading by tabaqui)
Uncaged by Sapphire; Paris/Chakotay; Adult
This is a satisfying and lengthy story that brings Tom and Chakotay together after B'Elanna and Janeway's deaths. Both women are recognizable as themselves, and Tom and Chakotay are written as loving them both very deeply. I have recently come across a rash of fics where Janeway is this crazy bitch woman from the loony bin that no one would let operate a microwave on her lonesome, much less run a starship. I hate that breed of slash that has to denigrate all the ladies to make the men folks look speshul. Yuck. This fic doesn't make that mistake. I also like this fic deals with both men's grief and that it isn't instantly resolved. Not a perfect story but an enjoyable one.

I Watched by Maisie; possible Chakotay/Paris; Adult (warnings for rape)
I really enjoyed this fic for a couple of reasons (and despite the first person POV; what is with the first person POV and this fandom? sheesh). It's written from an outsider perspective (Greg Ayala) and consists of that character's observations of Tom Paris and how he fits in among the crew. This is another one of those stories where Tom is beat on and assaulted by everything included the furniture, but don't worry. Chakotay comes to the rescue with some swift Maquis justice.

Stage Direction series by Amirin; Tom/Neelix; Adult
This story frustrates me on multiple levels. Multiple levels. First off, the narrative structure is bizarre, and, yes, the title is a literal description of that dubious writing choice. The story is mostly dialogue interspersed with, waaaaait for it--stage directions. Like *snort* or *shuffles feet* or *wink nudge* OMG it is enough to drive a gal to distraction. It also frustrates me because I think that the author is perceptive in many ways about Kes and Neelix, and I wish the rest of the story did them justice. Oh well. It's Tom! And Neelix! I have to kind of love anything that takes Neelix seriously as a sexual partner because those are hard to come by.

And now, a WTF moment. If I read one more story in which Chakotay is referred to as a "big Indian" or he pinches Tom playfully and suggests they play cowboys and Injuns in the bedroom, I think I am going to scream. Do. Not. Want.

Wesley Windon Price by deebrenton; Jossverse; Wes-centric
Oh gods it hurt my fingers to type that. *shakes them out* If we overlook the gross misspelling of Wes's name, this is pretty much a kickass vid. It's Wesley at his most ridiculous (and endearing).

Brokeback Enterprise by Tranchera; TNG; Picard/Wesley
Oh, yes. you read that pairing right. This is such a cleverly edited vid; the audio clips are very well-chosen to form a compelling narrative about a forbidden love affair. This should be a parody (the title even says so!), but it isn't funny in the least. This reminds me so much of that fic where Picard is in love with *all* the Crushers. I especially love the final image of Picard staring at his reflection in a viewport, both for its resonance with the imagery of the film and for its inherent impact.

Everlong by Bullwinkle520; Trek Reboot; Kirk/Spock/Uhura
Oh what a glorious tangle this is. Each of them wanting the others and Kirk looking in from the outside, always. Love the quick cuts between images near the end of the vid, the kind of building frenetic energy there. Well done.

The Angst Archive: otherwise known as the archive of issues of consent
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, here it is for your perusal. A multi-fandom collection of non-con hijinks, child abuse, slavery, and OOC evilness. LOL I've been going through all the Voyager entries and, surprise! In almost every fic uploaded to this archive, Tom Paris is one half of the pairing and he's almost always the abused party. Fandom seems to have decided that his dad and Tony Harris get together every Friday to drink a few beers and swap child abuse pointers. And a prolific subset (please, spirits, let it be a subset!) of writers really, really, really get off on manipulating Chakotay's character until it's barely recognizable to me. Now, I know that happens in every fandom, but I think I can pin down what's motivating writers to create such an OOC Chakotay. In more than a few of the stories in this archive, Chakotay is either evil and sadistic and fond of making Paris pee himself or he's this emotionally immature person who is extremely possessive of Tom and prone to jealous fits and existential crises about his age when faced with Harry Kim. Oh, the guffaws. One of the stories explicitly articulated where these character changes come from; basically--how could someone as centered and peaceful and non-confrontational as Chakotay have been such a storied leader of the Maquis Resistance? Surely he's been ruthless and unscrupulous and prone to rapery all this time and just hiding it under a veneer of calm. Another factor is that because the character is presented canonically as being passive in many ways, I think writers had fun writing a Chakotay consumed by passion; what better way to validate an OTP than having this normally placid character driven to jealous rages, but only by his one true love? Also, I think some of these stories were written by kiddos who really think a man in his forties is just about over the hill. LOL Anyways, I found almost nothing in the Voyager section I liked well enough to rec, but there's tons of other fandoms represented in the archive.

Distorted Image by Mandragora; Paris/Chakotay; Adult; warnings for rape; epic novel length
This is one of the stories I did enjoy enough in the archive to want to read again. In it, Paris and Chakotay are sent into a mirror verse where Paris is sexually enslaved by MV!Chakotay. Chakotay works with the good guys (an Alliance of Bajorans and Cardassians that includes MV!Seska) to rescue him and get him back to Voyager. This is an utterly predictable story; it's clear from the outset that Tom's enslavement is going to lead to a relationship with the real Chakotay. However, this is one of those wonderful slave fics that really dwells on the horrors of the slavery part without descending into implausible and ridiculous trauma for the slave. Nice long read.

Slave by Yvette; Tuvok/Kim; Adult; consent issues
Ignore the first paragraph which is weird and unnecessary. In this fic, Harry is transported to an alternate reality where everything seems to be the same except that Vulcans own human slaves. Harry's doppelganger takes his place on our Voyager, and both of them have real problems adjusting to their new realities. This was a nice change of pairing after the all Chakotay/Paris all the time club that is this archive. I also think it's in many ways a nice character study of both Tuvok and Harry. Ultimately, what I find fascinating is the inability of the people in either reality to understand where the other is coming from.

Fighting Gravity by pantswarrior; Trek Reboot; Kirk/Spock; Adult; novel length
In this story, Spock decides not to join the Enterprise on her first five-year mission. And then for reasons Kirk slowly comes to fathom, Spock is reduced to living on the streets of Earth and begging. That sounds like a really dumb premise; it's hard to envision the scenario that would lead to Spock, of all people, having to live that way. But pantswarrior pulls off this plotline with the kind of skill that makes you wonder why you ever doubted how awesome hobo Spock could be. There's a lovely amount of emotional h/c, excellent psychological insight to both characters, and an unfolding mystery that fascinated me. Wonderful read.

Stain of Silence by [livejournal.com profile] brummell; HP; Harry/Draco; Adult; Big-Bang length
After the war is over, Draco serves out his sentence in Harry's house as his ward. Ginny dies, leaving Harry with their child to care for. I love this story to bitty bits. Draco's despair and his endeavor to reconstruct his identity, plus the domesticity of the fic coupled with the way that the Weasley family does not see Draco as a fit caregiver for its newest member make this a very enjoyable read.

This Irregular Breathing Thing by [livejournal.com profile] monjtales; SPN Big Bang; Chuck/Zacariah non-con; Chuck/Castiel; Adult
I am so tired of Sam and Dean right now that this fic is like a breath of fresh air. Big Bang nearly kills all my SPN love. I wish they would limit participation somehow so that it's not just a million bajillion Wincest fics with minor plot variations. /rant Ahem. In this fic, Zacariah has been abusing Chuck since he became a prophet. I like the way this fic gives Chuck more agency in some ways than the show does (for instance, it explains his attempts to actually help the boys behind the scenes and why he doesn't recognize Sam and Dean when they appear on his doorstep). This is h/c all the way, and what a nicely broken Chuck. The dialogue is awesome and I love Castiel's characterization here.

With Muffled Drums by [livejournal.com profile] ariadne83; SGA; established Ford/Lorne; PG
I think that [livejournal.com profile] ariadne83 has the best understanding of the nuances of this show and its characters of anyone else I've met in fandom. Her attention to the subtle details makes every single thing she writes an utter (if sometimes hurty) joy to read. This is her interpretation of "The Last Man." Rodney's not the only one who's lost someone.

Free Falling and The Edge by Mort; Chakotay/Paris, Adult, Novel length, Warnings for rape in the second story
These are not unqualified recs. I have problems with both stories. But I also enjoy the hell out them too, so go figure. I think this author does a really fine job of understanding character motivation. There's wonderful character insight and perception going on here. And the writing is technically good and often stylistically good. My main problem with the first story is that Chakotay's feelings for Paris are introduced a bit abruptly and his internal monologue is rather more on the order of "Xander's chocolate orbs" than I'd like. I really don't have as much of a problem with the second story. It's pretty much an Old Skool, h/c, one half of the pairing is subjected to some pretty severe rapery and hijinks kind of fic. Which we all know is right up Lorraine's alley. I like the set up, which is that Voyager is invited to participate in an inter-galactic race, and I like the world building (these are some unique and well fleshed out aliens). Definitely worth a looksee.

In this vid, fewer fandoms are represented than the others I've recced, but the vid forms a much more cohesive narrative. Strong parallels are drawn between the characters in the vid, and we're shown clips of the women engaging in the same or similar activities back to back. Quite fun to watch.

Kiss Mr. Spock by gin1119; TOS Kirk/Spock
Oh, the silly! This is really a nicely edited vid that reimagines Kirk and Spock as Eric and Ariel from The Little Mermaid. Thank you, TOS, for giving us slash so thick, you can scrape it off the screen.

Voyager versus South Park by ZoeAmory; Voyager and South Park
Aahahahhahahaaahahah! This is like thirty seconds of South Park audio set to Voyager video, and it makes me snort milk out of my nose.

Janeway's Hair by dreamsavvy; Voyager
Just what it says on the tin--the many and multifarious hairstyles of Kathryn Janeway. (I am so besotted with this woman, it's not even funny.)

With or Without You by northernstar24; Kira/Odo DS9
This vid really cleverly mixes audio from the series with the song. It's pretty much the best shipper vid I've ever seen for these two. Makes me tear up like nobody's business. I love the way this vid articulates the tension between the love Odo feels for Kira and the duty he feels to his people.

Atheists Don't Have No Songs by Steve Martin
Give the vid two seconds; it's out of focus to start with. This is a barbershop quartet singing the whole of the Atheist Hymnal. *loves*

I haven't made a rec post in a long time and my bookmarks are getting unruly again.

Happy Alone by Danegen; SPN RPF
Because Jared and Jensen make this shit so easy. :) <3 (Also I love this song.)

i fell in love by proofpudding; SPN RPF
I hate downloading vids. Hate it. I want to watch them streaming. But I downloaded this one and I'm glad I did.

We Will Rock You by proofpudding; SPN gen
This is Sam and Dean being brothers. *loves*

Soul of Man by Lolawaldorf; SPN
I think Beck is pretty much a musical genius; I adore black and white film and photography; and this is one hell of a narrative. I know there was some controversy over the vid maker actually manipulating Beck's music for the vid, but I think the inclusion of the "wing sound" from the credits is a great touch.

Blue On Black by absrip; SPN Wincest
Okay, I fess up. I'd watch a vid to a Kenny Wayne Sheppard song if it was a black screen. Fortunately, this is a little more entertaining. :) Lovely use of color; wonderful editing. I like the use of audio clips here--like a haunting punctuation to the music.

In My Pants by Deirdre_C; SPN; Wincestyish
I love Lonely Island, those musical geniuses and this song never fails to make me laugh. Once you realize that SPN is one long money shot, it gets even funnier.

Like a Boss by [livejournal.com profile] winterevanesce; SPN
More Lonely Island! More Yay!

Qapla!
This is a transcript (and some audio) of an On the Media radio program about Star Trek and its many franchises. Really interesting with lots of interviews with cast members. Oh, Kate Mulgrew, never stop being awesome.
