Just Like Camping by Oparu; Janeway-centric gen; PG; short
What a lovely bit of character work this is. When Voyager's waste and water management systems need a complete overhaul, the crew is forced to use two large bathrooms BSG-style. And what a wonderful vehicle for character commentary, for those lovely little grace notes that make this fic such a delight to read.
Whoever Saves a Single Life by Nyssa23; Lewis Zimmerman-centric gen; PG; short
Short reflection by the creator of the EMH on the value of his life's work. Nice bit of backstory and character work.
Learn the Ropes by Mercurie; Seven and Naomi Wildman centric gen; PG; short
This snippet of conversation between Seven and Naomi is so poignant and chilling as Seven considers the impact their friendship might have on Naomi.
Much Too Long by Oparu; SGA XOVER; Janeway/Elizabeth Weir; PG-13ish; short
This is pretty much entirely dialogue driven, and Oparu has captured their voices perfectly as they commiserate over what being a leader forces them to leave behind. (Hint! It starts with S and ends with EX) This fic is the definition of fun; guaranteed to bring a smile to your face.
Penelope by Alara J Rogers; Tuvok/T'Pel PG; short
This is T'Pel as she waits for her husband to return to her and refuses to believe that he is dead. I love the brief exploration of Vulcan social expectations and the title's reference to The Odyssey is just perfect.
surely goodness and kindness by wintercreek; Janeway/Chakotay; PG; short
This episode tag describes the moments immediately after Janeway and Chakotay realize that they will be rescued from New Earth. Rescue is bittersweet, particularly for Chakotay, so I love the note of promise this ends on.
Galatea Redux and A Delicate Matter by
lamardeuse; Doctor/Seven of Nine; longish; PG
This fic explores what might have happened if Seven of Nine had not so handily dismissed the Doctor as potential relationship material. I think this fic has a really good handle on both characters and does a nice job of exploring what a relationship between these two might look like. I liked the idea of the two of them together very much; the show keeps drawing parallels between their experiences, and I'm glad fanfic gives us a chance to imagine them building on that connection.
And now we come to the part of this post where I apologize to everyone for scoffing at the idea of Janeway/Paris. I was highly skeptical. I read (and still read, mostly) Janeway's feelings for Tom as maternal and his conception of her as the same. Not the best foundation for a relationship in my estimation. And then, I found Missparker, and we all took a little jump to the left.
Perpetuating the Species by Missparker; Janeway/Paris; Adult; Big Bang length
The stupidest episode of Voyager so far is the one where Janeway and Paris turn into lizards and have babies. It starts out okay, great even, with some nice character work for Tom, but then they turn into lizards and have babies. THAT THEY LEAVE BEHIND. Um. No. I can't imagine that happening in a million gazillion years. The show treated it like a joke. And it's not funny. This fic deals with the aftermath (and non-lizard pregnancy that ensues) in a realistic and interesting way. What I really love about the way this author handles the pairing in all her fics is a thoughtful discussion of the power dynamics and what it would really mean for Janeway to have a relationship with any of the crew.
Delicate by Missparker; Janeway/Paris; Adult; 37,000 words
In this fic, Janeway and Paris are forced to stay in proximity with one another due to alien implants that allow them to share thoughts with each other. This changes the nature of their relationship drastically.
