Victor Frankenstein (Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy)

This was a fun movie. Daniel Radcliffe plays Igor, and I love that his name isn't really Igor but the name he assumes when James McAvoy's Victor rescues him from the circus to serve as his assistant.

It is also a slashy movie. Like really, really slashy. Igor's defining character trait turns out to be his devotion and loyalty to Victor, and Victor needs Igor even though he keeps treating him quite thoughtlessly and even cruelly at times.

Victor is full of hubris here, so arrogant, so brash. We learn that his brother died saving his life in a snow storm, and his quest to figure out how to create life is portrayed as a kind of atonement/redemption for that death. After he creates the monster, he has an epiphany, a moment of clarity, in which he rejects the experiments he's created. The very end of the movie lets you know that he's learned absolutely nothing and that his experiments will continue. In fact, at the movie's end, the viewer has the chilling realization that the actual story of Shelley's Frankenstein hasn't even happened yet. The question the movie leaves us with is whether Igor is really the monster that Victor creates.

Lots of humor here: Victor gives the monster a flat head because he "likes it." LOL

There's a little bit of plot hole for me; the Inspector that's chasing Victor is unhinged, but I don't understand why he gets kicked off the force. He got his arm mangled and there's a dead body in Victor's apartment. Clearly the Inspector was right. IDK

It's also got Sybil from Downton Abbey in all her beauty and charm.

Lucifer

This season has been interesting so far.

Tom Welling's character is a bit of an enigma. He starts out being an ass to everyone, completely unlikable. But he totally likes Lucifer and approves of his methods. I am certain that he knows Lucifer is a supernatural being. I suspect that he's actually The Sinnerman (the mysterious big bad of this season), but if not, then he's definitely not just a human police lieutenant. He says he's had a run-in with the Sinerman and lost someone close to him as a result, but I don't know if I believe that. He's either supernatural himself or a hunter or something. IDK In this latest episode, he was putting the moves on Chloe which makes me even more confused about what's going on with him. He even takes a bullet for her and saves her life.

Lucifer's mysteriously reappearing wings is funny and also really disturbing. I think Linda is right to see him chopping them off as a form of self-harm. The disappearance of his devil face is another mystery I'm eagerly awaiting to see solved.

Speaking of Linda, something is up with her; I think she's traumatized (and rightly so) by her experience with Mom and not admitting it. (How much do I love that Mom never actually gets a name? Sooooo much. She's not Gaia or Tiamat; she predates that; she's the Ur-Mom.)

Charlotte not knowing Dan was more emotionally moving than I thought it would be; his feelings were really hurt.

Loved the episode devoted to Maze and the way that she realizes that she has home and family with Lucifer, Chloe and Trixie, and Linda.

Amenadiel about broke my heart this latest episode (which was spectacularly shippy if brocest is your jam). First, he tries to be more like Lucifer in order to understand him, but his efforts end comically (although him dressed in that suit is anything but comical *fans face*). I love Dan rescuing Amenadiel and having his back, and Amenadiel concluding that his test is to be there for Lucifer and help him. He goes on to bring Lucifer back from the verge of killing a man, rightly pointing out that Lucifer is really angry with himself for not being the one to protect Chloe. Lucifer is then so utterly, devastatingly, deliberately cruel to Amenadiel, and Amenadiel just takes it and says he's still going to have Lucy's back; that whole scene strongly reminded me of a certain flavor of Harry/Draco that hits me in the id hard.

Random humor: Lucifer's emoji text to Amenadiel, Ella perving on Amenadiel, Maze and Trixie secret handshake, Maze's boob massage, Maze stitching a button into the fugitive's wound

Dirk Gently

We only saw the premiere and missed this past Saturday's episode because we were out of town, so don't spoil me if you saw the second episode please! :)

This season starts off super bleak. Farrah and Todd are on the run; they are growing increasingly more desperate and weary, and Todd actually suffers from the hallucination disease he was only pretending to have before, so his physical and mental health aren't good.

Dirk is imprisoned by the military and has been undergoing two months of constant and unpleasant tests. Ken has been imprisoned in the same facility, but they've kept him in a cab the entire time for some bizarre reason. Bart has lost her mind; she can't find Ken, and she wants a friend so badly.

The episode begins with a look into another dimension with gay princes who need to fulfill a prophecy (Emma was super stoked by this plot line) and who are going to somehow interact with Dirk and the gang. I can't tell if they'll be transported to that dimension or if the princes are coming to our earth. Looking forward to the next episodes.

It's a pity Welling isn't a more, um, nuanced actor.

Oh my. As a Serious Frankenstein Person -- I grew up on the Dracula side of the fence, but teaching Mary Shelley flipped me -- I was amazed and amused by Victor Frankenstein. And being me, it never occurred to me to slash them -- but that is the ONLY THING THAT COULD SAVE THAT MOVIE!!!

Thank you. If I need to rewatch it for research purposes (I read the Twilight Saga for an MLA presentation on Byronic -- and otherwise -- vampires, and I was NOT happy about it), I will at least imagine that they are doing each other on the lab floor.
