First 2 Books of Heroes of Olympus

The Lost Hero (The Heroes of Olympus, #1)The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Can my review just consist of Leo, Leo, Leo, LEO IS AWESOME, Leo!? LOL

And then I will follow that with a litany of Piper is awesome. :)

Heroes of Olympus follows the Percy Jackson series seamlessly, its plot telegraphed all throughout PJ in ways that only become clear once you've finished HoO. The basic premise is that the Greek gods also have a Roman aspect, not quite like a split personality but rather another avatar in which they can appear which has different attributes. Demigod children can be born to the Greek and the Roman aspect of a god(dess). The Greek demigod world is explored in the PJ series; HoO introduces the Roman demigod world. Greek and Roman demigods don't know about each other because they always fight each other, and the gods keep their existence a secret from each other to prevent war; I don't remember why they always fight each other.

Anyway, a new threat is rising that only be fought if the Greek and Roman demigod forces combine. Jason, a praetor of the Roman demigod army, trades places unwillingly with Percy Jackson. This first book is all about an amnesiac Jason finding his way to Camp Half-Blood and making friendships with Piper and Leo, new recruits to the camp. They all go on a quest together and become team.

This book is much more diverse than the PJ series; Piper is Cherokee, and Leo is Latino.

Piper is a child of Aphrodite, and I really love the book's take on what beauty is and the kind of power it can wield; Piper is seriously badass. Leo is a child of Hephaestus, and he is always making something cool or doing something cool with technology. He has such a tragic back story; he has felt responsible for his mother's death for years. He's been alone and on the outside, and he developed a role as the clown to protect himself. He's so kind and good and insecure and silly, and I LOVE HIM, OKAY? LOL

The Son of Neptune (The Heroes of Olympus, #2)The Son of Neptune by Rick Riordan

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book follows an amnesiac Percy Jackson as he discovers the world of Roman demigods. This book continues the trend of the first in being more diverse: Hazel is African American, and Frank is Chinese-American.

Percy's amnesia isn't as total as Jason's, and he sheds it more quickly and more easily than Jason does.

Absolutely love Hazel. Her back story is so sad; she's been cursed all her life, she's responsible for Gaea's foothold in the world becoming more firm, and she's responsible for her mother's death even if that death is necessary. She is so courageous.

Absolutely love Frank. He's the son of Mars, but he's also the son of Neptune, and he can shapeshift! Frank growing in confidence and learning just how badass he really is is truly a delight.

I love the differences in the Roman camp and the Greek one and how each has strengths and weaknesses. Percy sees for the first time what it might be like to live somewhere safe and have a family with Annabeth, and his happy ending is pretty heavily telegraphed here.

Can't wait for the next book with all seven heroes working together.

I have not! I intended to read the Magnus Chase books first, but that first book in The Trials of Apollo series sounds pretty good! Hmmmmm!
