Iron Fist Season 1 Ep 9-13
Oh, man. Harold does wake up like a zombie! *dies laughing* I know I'm Doing It Wrong, but his character is almost my favorite thing about the whole show. That moment in the ER when he's all *dagger eyes* about the guy coughing is the epitome of my utter joy in watching Harold. I fear that season 2 will suffer for his true and final demise at the end of season 1.
RIP, Kyle. I expected your death from almost the first instant of your appearance, but still I mourn you. LOL Here's an example of why this show is so good. Kyle's death is funny. It's Harold being Harold except waay extra, and we've all been expecting both Harold to lose it and Kyle to buy it, and it's over ice cream *dies*. But then Harold has a moment of lucidity, and I feel genuine pathos for him. It doesn't last, but damn is that guy a good actor.
I expected to find out that Harold was behind the plane crash that killed Danny's parents, but damn. I think the show does that and has him give his little wanting to push Danny's dad off the building speech to destroy any sympathy the audience might feel for him. When I think of him as an essentially decent person--a widower, a single dad to two kids, someone who died of cancer over a long and harrowing time--who is turned evil through the reincarnation process, I *do* feel sympathy for him. But the show makes sure to let us know he was a total evil asshole before he got Immortaled.
That scene where he kills the board member is so chilling. A father's job is to provide his children a beautiful lie to live in? Yikes.
Claire's character is illuminated in interesting ways. Madame Gao says she's essentially riding on the coattails of super heroes, that Claire wants glory and wishes she was special, and she clearly hits a nerve. I find Claire a bit complicated in this show. She's often the voice of reason; she's older than Danny and Colleen, and she generally advocates for a peaceful solution to their problems. She gives Danny a stern talking to about his anger (which he listens to respectfully and thanks her for, OMG, do I love him), and she tells Danny and Colleen both that they are fucked up and way too violent. And then she sashays out the door with her tiger claws. So, uh. LOL
I am convinced that Ward is leaving the Japanese gang to go rescue Joy from their dad (he's just heard the legend about the guy who gets resurrected so many times he roasts his kids for dinner) but is stopped by Harold setting up his arrest and hospitalization.
I really like that the Iron Fist can also heal. That comes in handy for last-second saves. :)
Danny in Luke Cage's bullet-shredded shirt is awesome.
Love Danny busting in through the window of Rand unexpectedly instead of coming from the elevator.
Adore beyond the telling him inviting Colleen to go with him to Kun Lun.
I like the reveal about why he left Kun Lun and why he's having issues adapting to his role as the Iron Fist. Obviously the circumstances are not the same, but I know what it's like to think that doing something or getting something is going change you, to fix whatever it is that is empty or wrong, and then it doesn't work at all, and it's like it's even worse than before when the thing was just broken. Because before you had a Plan and a Goal and Steps to Take, and now you're just Broken with nothing to show for all that work.
I am so glad that they did not go love triangle route. I am also super glad the whole "you're the Hand and you lied to me!" arc doesn't go on for very long. I like that she and Danny both are now dealing with the same issues--betrayal by people they believed family, an upending of beliefs and worldviews, a sense of being rudderless. The only thing I don't like is that apparently Colleen is the only person who doesn't know the Hand is evil? It shouldn't have been her former students carting her off to be killed (not really sure what was going on there anyway; they were clearly going to kill her, but were they going to harvest her organs or something? Bacudo said something about using her or her being of service or something else weird IDK). Almost everybody in that group should think like Colleen with zero reason to believe anything to the contrary, and there should be a small group of older people (like ten tops) who are surveilling everyone and taking them to the death chamber. Otherwise, it's way too unbelievable to me.
Absolutely love her fight with Bacudo. All the fights in this show are amazing. They are about the physicality of the participants instead of gross out bone breaking and head bashing. Absolutely love her volunteering to kill Harold in Danny's stead.
Joy. Joy. Joy. I love her. I love the way that she tries so hard to be moral and to be good in business while also being a good person. I love the way that she always tries to do what is right. I get what they're going for with her. Finding out her dad is alive is a mind fuck. Realizing that Ward is so fucked up because of him and realizing that her dad is evil is also a mind fuck. I actually get why she would blame Ward and why she would blame Danny. That's what people do in a lot of cases that are more real life and less related to zombie dads. But I don't like it. The finale looks like it's setting her up to be a villain, and I just don't buy it. I don't believe the Joy I've come to know over this season could actually kill Danny. I believe she could be angry and messed up and maybe even not want to have anything to do with him, but I have a hard time buying her as a villain. I mean, right at the end before it all falls apart when she's saying they should all go on a family vacation, she includes Danny in that family.
Wow, what a turn around on Ward! Yay for redemption! I'm glad he gets to be the one who kills Harold at the end. I love that he's already trying to help Danny by telling Jeri that the charges are false before Danny even contacts him.
Oh, Davos. :( I totally get his feelings of betrayal and anger. I have a hard time believing that he wants to kill Danny truly, though. I think he's hurt, but man. Why does everybody gotta go for the permanent solution?
I'm also grateful for the quick and easy wrap up on everything--Harold's nicely cremated, Danny's nicely redeemed in the eyes of the law. Sometimes I want some realism, and sometimes I just want everything to be fine at the end of the show. LOL
It's nice to end with a mystery as well. What's happened in Kun Lun? Has it been destroyed because Danny left his post?
Can't wait to start season 2!
We have also decided that there needs to be an Iron Fist Iron Chef AU. Think of the possibilities.

Ward had such a good arc in season one. His turnaround is sudden but it makes sense, I think. I have a whole theory about love language where Ward's love language is basically doing things for people, and Danny could talk about family 'til he was blue in the face and Ward wouldn't believe him, but Danny coming for them in the penthouse when the Hand were holding the Meachums finally made something click -- I think that was the turnaround, that was the point when Ward finally let Danny in, and as many (terrible, staggering) flaws as he had, one of the things about Ward is that he'll do pretty much anything for the handful of people that he's got in the "family" category.
I really appreciated that he got to kill Harold in the end. That was so satisfying.
Gotta say that, yeah, I think Davos has a legitimate grudge. I mean, you can also see where Danny is coming from, but ... yeah. XD (Did you know he's on Doctor Who now?)

By the same token, that's why Joy's fall doesn't make sense to me. I don't see any glimpses of the villain she's apparently poised to become until that final conversation in the last episode.
Oh, I completely agree that Davos has a legitimate grudge; I just don't understand why he wants to *murder* Danny in response. I guess if Danny dies then someone else gets to be the Hand. That's probably it.
I didn't know that. I haven't seen more than one or two episodes of Dr. Who. Good for him!
