Happy Birthday to Me! It's been an excellent day.

1. So many wonderful birthday messages from you all. Thank you. *air kisses*

2. I just got a book from [personal profile] amejisuto about Eleanor Roosevelt. Yay! Thank you, sweetie. <3

3. One of my friends sent me several pairs of socks for my birthday, and the purchase of each pair donates a pair of socks to LGBTQ people in need (bombas.com/pride). These are the absolute most comfortable socks I have ever put on my feet, and they are all tricked out in rainbows. *loves*

4. Another friend dropped by to holler at me from the driveway and drop off some stickers and notepads and other stationery goodness which I love so.

5. Money from my parents and my in-laws! Whooooo! Pretty sure it's going towards a laptop, but even so, good to have. :)

6.

Women of the Beat Generation: The Writers, Artists and Muses at the Heart of a RevolutionWomen of the Beat Generation: The Writers, Artists and Muses at the Heart of a Revolution by Brenda Knight

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I think this is an important work; it highlights just how many women were involved in the Beat scene and the way that they often get left out of the official narrative of the Beat movement. It's divided into several sections: Precursors, Muses, Writers, and Artists. Each woman gets a bio and some photos and a selection of her poetry and prose if she wrote any (Joan Vollmer, for example, didn't write, and so only a letter from her to Ginsberg is included as an example of her writing).

My problem is three-fold: First, it's like a dictionary of literary biography, so each woman gets a short entry which lacks depth. Second, some of the women in the Muses section just aren't good writers. I can see the value of hearing about what the time period was like in their own words, but it's just not good reading (Carolyn Cassady especially). Finally, I don't quite understand the rationale behind some of the poems/prose pieces chosen. I realize that accessibility may not have been driving the editor's choice, but a lot of the poems chosen leave me cold and don't make a lot of sense to me out of context (this is probably a me problem rather than a problem with the book).

7. We just watched the finale of season 2 of Avatar, and I totally get where the Zutara is coming from now. They had a moment in that crystal cave. I should never have doubted you, my Zutara shipper friends. LOL I genuinely can't remember much of what happens in the third season; I don't think I saw some of those episodes, so that's fun. I am so worried about Uncle Iroh. *bites nails*
