Guardians of the Galaxy

I really liked this movie. I think I liked it better than The Avengers. I'm not familiar with the comics, so I'm not comparing it to the original source, though; I realize YMMV for people who have long been fans of the comic.

I know that we're supposed to think Star Lord is the main protagonist, but what I really like about this movie is that it's truly an ensemble cast. With the exception of the two opening scenes, Star Lord does nothing else by himself, and all the characters get moments to shine.

I love that overall this was a very fun movie. It was funny and it was silly with deft touches of pathos that undercut the silliness just a bit.

I like that it's in space! With spaceships! And lasers!

I also like that it's pretty much Farscape. LOL

Someone else on my flist posted that this movie is like a love letter to the 80s, and they're totally right. From the music to the pop culture references, this movie is made to resonate with people in their mid to late thirties. Which is refreshing! But it made for some amusing watching. We went to the matinee, and there were only about ten other people besides us. When Star Lord makes the Footloose joke, Josh and I were the only people laughing (clearly we were the oldest people in the theater). Same for the Howard the Duck cameo.

In other movie joke news, after Star Lord says that his ship would look like a Jackson Pollack under a black light, Emma turns to me and whispers, "I bet he peed everywhere!" Yes, baby. That's it exactly. LOL

I was so pleased that Groot didn't actually die; I was afraid he might. Emma and I squealed when we saw the little Grootling. Adorbs.

The movie looked spectacular; mad props to the special effects and CGI.

In short, I truly enjoyed this and can't wait for the next installment.

Now I am off to find some fic, for I ship them all.

The blacklight joke killed me, just because the adults cracked up and there's kids doing audible "...?" (What's a blacklight? Who's Jason Pollack?)
