1. I had my interview for promotion to full professor yesterday. I feel really good about my application. Obviously, nothing is certain, but I am not anxious about it at all. Now to wait until April. :)

2. I listened to this NPR interview with Rhiannon Giddens about turning her ballad "Build a House" into a children's book, and you should, too. You should also listen to the song. It's an unflinching look at the African American experience, beginning with slavery, that highlights black resiliency and strength.

3. You should also watch the music video for Harry Styles's Music for a Sushi Restaurant. Holy shit is this a bit of homoerotic, monsterfucking gloriousness. Thanks to nyctanthes for the heads up.

4. You should read Experimental Protocol by anagrrl. It's a Rodney-centric AU of the SGA episode "Mortal Coil" that is full of the kind of creeping dread that's perfect for a Halloween read.

5. If you'd rather spend Halloween giggling, check out this political attack ad we received in the mail. I don't think it had the desired effect. I would love to live on planet Stacey. *g*

Good luck with #1! How does the Professorship thing work in the US? Is it different from being a lecturer, or are all lecturers called professors? (Here in the UK it’s a very high ranking title and I’m just trying to work out if you’re aiming to be really scarily important and whether I’m going to dare speak to you any more if you get it ;) ) Seriously, though, it sounds like something that is a Big Deal in whatever country; I’m just interested in whether it means you’re going to be head of whole departments?

So here is the way the ranks go in the US system, starting with the lowest rank:

Adjunct (part-time)
Instructor (not tenure-track)
Lecturer (not tenure-track)
Assistant Professor (tenure-track)
You apply for tenure in between here.
Associate Professor (tenure-track)
Professor (tenure track)

So I am applying for the highest rank you can attain. I will not be head of anything like the chair of a department (like English) or the dean of a school (many departments grouped together), thank goodness. Those positions are separate from professorial rank.

The fact that people at some unis have to interview for their promotions blows my mind. I mean, the entire process, no matter where you are, is fucked, but yikes. I'm glad it went well, and I can't wait to toast your success ♥

I think in our case, it's actually a good idea. We're a five campus institution that is the product of a consolidation; it's possible that some members of your promotion and/or tenure committee might not know you well, so the interview is a chance for you to get to talk about your achievements to these people and sell them in a way a document might not. I knew all mine really well, so it wasn't an issue for me at all, but I can see instances where that might happen for somebody.

Yeah, the political rhetoric in this state leaves a lot to be desired. They can't really say anything bad about her because there isn't anything to say; they have to focus on appearance and shit like that (which is ludicrous because she's a beautiful woman). On paid leave from work due to injury, so I've had time and space to go back through my medical records. There's been hints of autoimmune disease for years, possibly decades, but nobody followed up. And now I'm praying that I'm wrong and the COVID infections (x2) I had this year didn't trigger SLE - lupus
