Aegis by [livejournal.com profile] leahwoof (which is the lj name for two authors: Leah and [livejournal.com profile] springwoof) McShep and other pairings; Adult This was written for the SGA Big Bang Challenge and I'm starting with it because I'm blown away by this fic. When I read the summary for the fic I didn't think it was my cup of tea and I almost passed it by, but for some reason I clicked on the story and I'm so glad I did. This author seamlessly weaves a layer of her own making into the SGA 'verse (that those who have the ATA gene also possess superhero like Gifts) without changing the core of who the characters are. This rewrite of season one both adheres to and converges from that script in suprising and gratifying ways. I think most of you will be pleased with the changes this writer has chosen to make in the events of season one. Another commenter to her fic remarked that the Gifts that each character possesses function as indicators of their personalities--we are given wonderful insights to each of them based on the nature of their Gifts and how they react to them. The Sheppard here is damaged and painfully so, but the story doesn't ever ask me to feel emotion for the characters that they haven't earned. This fic feels *real* to me and I strongly urge you all to read it.

Failsafe by [livejournal.com profile] ana_grrl McShep PG-13 I don't want to give away too much about the content of this story because I don't want to ruin the clever narrative structure. We're told the story in reverse order and getting to the end of the fic and realizing what that initial vignette actually means is heartbreaking. This is about a ten on the angst meter, people. I feel so incredibly sorry for Rodney here and I also think Ana has brilliantly realized a very plausible contingency plan the Ancients may have enacted.

Owl Eyes by [livejournal.com profile] salieri McShep Adult After his encounter with the Eratus bug, Sheppard experiences a medical emergency, only Rodney can't open the door to the Colonel's quarters. What's so incredibly lovely about this fic are the descriptive passages the writer intersperses throughout; as he's dying, John thinks of his childhood and a day spent skating on the lake and the language used in those passages is so beautiful it aches to read it.
