Blog rec: J. W. Young
Sep. 18th, 2011 08:44 pmMy writer friend J. W. Young decided this weekend that as many of her publications occur in online journals, perhaps it is time that she has a web presence. Naturally, I suggested Dreamwidth as a platform. :)
Joy is primarily a creative non-fiction writer (focusing mostly on memoir and personal reflection) although she has been known to dabble in poetry and other genres of writing. I would characterize her writing as brutally honest, deeply self-aware, and wryly funny. She's also the real deal, my friends. Her latest piece was published alongside an essay by Joyce Carol Oates. Sometimes I just stand near Joy and hope her shiny will rub off on me. LOL
I'm not sure what all Joy intends to do with her journal. I know she's going to link to publications; the one she's linked to in her first post is an essay about her mother's attempt to live without running water in Oaklahoma. (This is the essay published in the august company of the work of Ms. Oates.) Whatever she posts, I know Joy is interested in conversation and discussion about her work and about writing in general.
Joy is not in any fandom per se but she is very much fandom adjacent, and the path to her heart takes a very long detour through the dancefloor of Fangtasia and into Eric Northman's office where he is indeed very happy to see her.
So let me introduce you all to
joyousinhell. Joy is still decorating and figuring out how DW works, so layouts and trimmings are subject to change. Please extend her the friendly welcome you guys all gave me six years ago when I stumbled onto LJ. I think you will find a lot to interest you at her blog--good talk, good times, and damn fine writing.
