Yesterday, Emma and I went to see Spiderman and then out to dinner at a fancy restaurant while Josh stayed home with Feefers. We both dressed up because of fancy restaurant; Emma wore this cute chevron patterned tank dress with her cobalt blue sneakers and her gloves. Somehow she convinced my mother--conservative, Baptist Mimi--to buy her electric blue, fingerless, opera-length gloves that are also made entirely of fishnet. IDK It boggles the mind. Anyway, Ems looked super cute and kinda badass, and at one point, we had the following fashion conversation.

Ems: Mom, I really like wearing one thing that kinda doesn't go with the other stuff, that's kinda tough looking, like these gloves with my dress.

Me: Well, that's a tried and true fashion approach, like these fierce boots I'm wearing with my dress or the sorta masculine perfume I'm wearing with all my makeup and jewelry.

Ems: I like it.

I cannot tell you how fascinating it is to watch her develop her own sense of style, her own philosophy of life, her own approach to the world around her. Right now, because of her age, a lot of who Emma is merely reflects me and her father. But small pockets of individuality that are based on careful reflection and that represent some core Emma-ness as distinct from the family unit, have emerged over the years, and I am totally digging it.

I don't always love being a mom. Evidence: Fiona has decided to wake up around 3:30 and be a pill almost every night for the past two weeks. That fills my heart with despair. LOL But watching her learn to walk and Emma figure out her fashion sense--those things are rocking the mother's day for me.
