Uprooted by Naomi Novik

I finished Uprooted last night. I read the first 190 pages in one sitting on Saturday and then had to put the book down because we had guests Sun-Mon. I finished the rest of it in a feverish rush last night, and I was blown away.

I knew Naomi Novik is a good writer. I have always enjoyed her fanfic, especially in Supernatural and Stargate Atlantis, and I knew her novels would be at least competent based on the fic I'd read. If I had realized she was this good of a writer, I'd have bought the Temeraire series the second I heard of it. Uprooted is truly something special.

In the lovely original story by skieswideopen, John gets zapped by an Ancient Device and can only appear thereafter to Cam; he finally becomes corporeal again after many months and when Cam is in extreme danger.

I turned the story into something much more ambiguous and horrific and had a lot of fun in the writing.
