y'all ready for this?
Mar. 14th, 2021 07:32 am1. Emma got a scholarship offer from GA Southern! It's a one time 4600 scholarship, but I am so excited! She will get free tuition with the Zel Miller state program, she's already got one year under her belt doing dual enrolled + AP, and she's getting a year paid for by my parents/grandparents who put money aside for that when she was a baby, so I am feeling a lot better about the prospect of paying for college. I don't know that she'll end up going to GA Southern, but I was starting to worry that she wouldn't be offered any institution-specific scholarships, so this encourages me that perhaps the other schools where she's been accepted will also offer her something. *crosses fingers*
2. The migraine is gone! Hurray!
3. Since it is now 80 degrees here *cries* I have painted my toenails in fun glitter and will be wearing open toed shoes for the foreseeable future.
4. My cabinet from Wayfair arrived. I am so happy to have my desk finally organized and all my stationery and office supplies put away neatly.
5.
Animals Can Be Almost Human by Alma E. Guinness
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
It took us almost four months to read this, and the kiddo and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was given this compilation of animal stories that had been featured in Reader's Digest in the 80s and really enjoyed it as a kid.
Rereading as an adult, I noticed a fair amount of casual racism in the stories that feature characters of color or are set in places outside the Western world that I did not pick up on as a kid. I tried to modify and/or contextualize that for the kiddo as I was reading. I also had forgotten how sad a lot of these stories are (with a lot of them ending in animal death). Those two things kept this volume from being a five star read for me.
