I think the fair treatment is the key point here. I always try to treat canonical love interests fairly when I'm writing non-canonical relationships, too, and I think a lot of McShep writers did the same with Keller, Sam, and Katie Brown. I think the ones who bashed these character just spoke so loudly they drowned out the rest of us.
