1. I offhandedly remarked to
misbegotten that I had never tried lemon curd before. What did I just find in my mailbox? Lemon curd. *big smile* Thank you so much,
misbegotten ! What a thoughtful and generous surprise. :)
2. Emma and I finished season 1 of Stranger Things.
Damn it, Steve! Why'd you have to go and make me like you? He turns it around, hard, in those last two episodes.
I have come around on Nancy as well in this last episode. The plan she and Jonathon devise is so brave and clever, and it WORKS even if the damn thing won't just die already.
Once again, Hopper and Joyce have my heart, especially Hopper, in this episode. I'm not going to lie, I almost expected the Finding Nemo dialogue when they actually get to Will because of course his motherswims across the whole damn ocean goes into an alien dimension to find him; that's what moms do. I don't know how to feel about Hopper selling out El and the boys in order to get permission to search for Will; I don't know if he thinks she'll be able to protect herself or what, but I don't like it. :(
The kids' last stand against the Demigorgon is so damn good. Lucas hits it every single time; his aim is true even under those circumstances. My heart, my heart, my heart. And then El saves them. *sniffle* I mean, the end of the show pretty clearly telegraphs that she's still alive, but I thought in that moment she might actually be dead. :(
All those scenes where Mike is spinning out the fantasy that El will get to live in his basement (emphatically NOT as his sister LOL) break my heart. And El looking in the mirror and being so sad about not having hair. :(
Asshole scientist gets eaten. Yay!
I love that the show ends with Jonathon driving Will home. That boy will never walk anywhere again. LOL And I also like what I perceive to be a new warmth from Mike and Nancy's mom; she seems a little snobby to me throughout the series, and I feel like she's walked that back, and maybe she's going to be more present and available in her kids' lives.
So, I have questions (which I don't actually want answered if the answers show up in season two; if not, speculation much welcome):
When El goes into the Upside Down, she doesn't go physically, just as a psychic projection or whatever. So what she sees is utter blackness with the Demigorgon's form. When she first contacts it, it's eating something, but we can't see what it's eating. What is it eating? I don't remember seeing anything alive in the Upside Down for it to eat. So what does the Demigorgon eat in its natural environment? Emma thinks that the Gate El made is not the first and only breach into the Upside Down and that the Demigorgon must have been feeding on our world for a long time; I'm not sure that fits what we've been shown given that the Demigorgon seems trapped to a limited geographic area, but the idea of the Upside Down as the origin for the fae, for instance, is really interesting.
Next, what is the Demigorgon? I kept expecting the reveal that the Demigorgon is actually a person because the Upside Down is the corrupted version of our world so why not the Demigorgon as the corrupted version of us. But IDK
Finally, how many of them are there? Is the Demigorgon a singular entity, or are there bunches of them all over the world in the Upside Down? Hopper and Joyce see a hatched egg, but it's really far away from that nest-like thing they find with Will and the other dead bodies. Are we supposed to assume the slug thing down Will's throat hatched from the egg? Is the slug thing a Demigorgon baby or something else entirely? The characters in the show are clearly operating as if now that the Demigorgon is dead, they're safe, but the breach into the Upside Down isn't sealed which means that Something can still come through, and/or people from our side might accidentally fall through.
I have been hit with an urge to write a monkey's paw fic from Joyce's perspective that starts something like
Joyce watches Will eat macaroni and cheese and laugh at his brother's jokes and slip a piece of ham to the dog under the table when he thinks no one's looking and knows in her heart that her baby came back wrong.
But I'm not doing it because even though I lived through them, I know I'd have to go research the 80s to write in this fandom, and I don't wanna! Also, there's probably a million fics already with that theme. LOL
I hope we start season 2 today
