I hope these posts aren't getting tedious for everyone. I prefer to use lj to keep track of fics I've read, enjoyed, and may want to read again. I don't like using the AOL bookmarks and I find lj mems easier to navigate than, say, creating a Word doc or something.

So.....

I've been thinking about something recently. Do you guys think it's possible to separate your feelings about a fan from his/her fannish output?

Outside fandom, I'm generally able to separate my feelings about an actor, artist, singer from his/her movie, painting, song. For example, Tom Cruise has apparently lost his mind. As a woman who suffered from SEVERE post-partum depression, I can say that the guy is off his gourd, and high powered colonics are not the cure for that particular problem. But I still sigh dreamily when I catch Cocktail on TNT. Or Courtney Love, arguably the biggest waste of space, evah. Yet, I catch myself rocking out when "Celebrity Skin" comes on the radio.

But, I don't think it's possible to separate producer from product in the lj world of fandom. Lj is so communal; it's a place where we can actually have conversations about shows/books/etc we love and fanfic and fanart are part of that conversation. And I wonder, if like with people we know in real life, we shut down the convo (ie reading fic by that writer) when we realize we're not personally compatible with the writer.

Fannish offerings are usually attached to a journal with personal posts. If I like Fan X's writing, I often check out her journal for more fic and to see if we have anything else in common. If Fan X proves to be a bigot or something else I find distasteful in her posts, that affects the way I read her fic. Even if I don't go check out the writer's journal, many writers begin fics with a little mini personal post, and many times the headers that writers put on fic are very lively and telling of that person's personality.

So, I might have in the back of my mind as I read her fic, [livejournal.com profile] suki_blue is a wonderfully silly and light-hearted individual just from the headers on her fic. Because I think of her this way, it really surprises me when she writes something dark, such as her recent BtVS/Hellraiser crossover. So I experience her writing in terms of what she's written before and also what I know about her personal life. Oh, she's a dog lover; is Xander's new fantabulous mutt based on her own pooch? And so on.

Does this make sense to you guys? If you agree that you can't separate the fan from the fic, do you think that's a problem? If you don't agree, is there something wrong with my approach? I just got to feeling weird about this today when I realized that I can't read Fan X's fanfic without Fan X's obsession with Ho-ho's or the Spice Girls or her three year old's inability to potty train (okay so that last one's totally me LOL) registering at least subconsciously as I read.
