As you guys know, I just finished the Harry Potter books. I really enjoyed them; I'm sorry they're over; can't wait for the final installment; planning to watch all the movies this week. And yet, I'm hesitant to read any fic. Why is that?

Exec asked me in an email who I was gonna ship and if I'd write fic, and it gave me pause. Until she asked, I hadn't really even considered trying to find any fic to read or who I would ship. And that's when I realized part of the problem for me.

We've talked about this here before, but half the joy of a pairing for me is inserting myself into the text. I don't just like thinking about Angel with Oz; I like thinking about myself with him through the medium of Oz. And I do enjoy reading pairings in which I don't identity or self-insert for one of the characters, but as I only read in the Jossverse and love those worlds so much, I think it's my love of the 'verse that makes me interested in those pairings.

I am not attracted to anybody in Harry Potter. I mean, I'm not UNattracted to them. But they're kids, you know? And I can't remember the last time I found even a 17 year old attractive. And I'm not really attracted to any of the adults either. There's nobody's shoes I really want to be in. I also don't have the love of the 'verse that I do with Buffy and Firefly. For instance (and I know a hardcore Potterlover would smack me for this), with the exception of Fleur and her ridiculous phonetically rendered accent and Hagrid and the house elves, nobody seems to have a very distinctive voice to me. Dialogue is not a real strong suit for me in these books. I often feel as if any of the characters could be delivering the lines interchangeably or that the narrative-expositiony voice is delivering the dialogue. I think the 'verse is interesting, but it doesn't consume me the way the Jossverse does.

However, not having read any Harry Potter fic, I'd like the chance to be convinced that I'm missing out on something awesome. So, please rec me the Harry Potter stories that you love. That you think are the best. That you think will make me stay up all night and then contemplate writing some myself. I'd like to get a bunch of pairings, too--so boyslash, femslash, het. The only caveat is that I really don't want to read about 11 year old Harry Potter getting it on with anyone, either older or his contemporary, (another reason I guess I'm hesitant to jump into the world of HP fic), although I don't mind if you do.
