All Our Tomorrows Thrown Away by teand Sam/Dean Adult Pre-series (Sam is 18) John discovers that Sam and Dean are in a sexual relationship. John’s response to his sons’ behavior in this fic is very plausible and an excellent explanation of just why he told Sam to leave and never come back. This is very angsty and very heart-hurty and for me, rounds out nicely what happened before Sam left for Stanford.

good lives are gold (like the oldest stories) by txtequilanights Sam/Dean Adult This is Dean in one version of the Wishverse, a version where John still lives and his relationship with Sam is not estranged. This fic is like a punch to the gut; it makes you realize how easily the djinn could have made Dean want to stay.

Room and Board by maygra Sam/Dean (Sam/OMCs) Adult This is rentboy fic that’s not ridiculous! This is prostitute!Sam fic that fits seamlessly into the canon. This is “gee, why can’t I write something that hot” fic. Go read. I love this characterization of Sam—-strong and very much in charge. Usually prostitute!fic woobifies the character, makes him vulnerable and in need of protection. Not so here. It’s a refreshing change.

Room 11A by estrella30 Sam/Dean Adult After they escape from prison, Sam and Dean lay low for awhile. The confinement really starts to get to Dean and Sam starts watching Dean in a way that creeps him out. This is fun and showcases them being boys. I love. Sam swallows. Licks sauce off his bottom lip. "Was bored," he says with a shrug. "Figured we needed something new to kill some time." Dean can't believe it. He'd choke to death if he didn't think it was so cliché. "And the thought of buying a board game didn't occur to you?" "This seemed like more fun." Sam says simply.

Sustenance by iamstealthyone Gen This piece is a Winchester character study conducted through the medium of cookbooks. It’s simply lovely—-sad, hopeful, and sweet. The final vignette will wreck your heart; smash it into bitty bits and then grind them into the carpet. And then you will say, “Oh, Sam. Oh, Dean. Oh, boys.”

When I Hear that Whistle Blowing by kroki_refur Sam-centric, G-rated Gen This was written in honor of Sam’s birthday and will simply tear your heart out. Wee!Sam kills me here. Kills me ded. Halfway home, Dad glances at him in the mirror, and Sam’s surprised to see he doesn’t look angry; in fact, he almost looks sad. “Next time, ask for a lawyer,” he says. Sam shrugs, retreats into his mind and starts elaborating on his new plan. Next time, he thinks, I’m gonna be a lawyer.

Safe Through Dark by eloise_bright Deacon-centric gen, PG-13ish This is Deacon’s backstory—-how he and John met and how their friendship continued after their tour together in the war. This is wonderfully written and is now part of my personal canon for that character.

The Uses of Sarcasm by dotfic Gen PG-13ish. This is written entirely in dialogue and is really, really funny. I love the way the conversation between the boys segues from hilarious and ridiculous into something much more meaningful.

My Sorrows Learned to Swim by coffee_in_bed Sam/Ellen Adult You know, I haven’t read this pairing before. There’s tons of Ellen/Dean out there but I haven’t really come across a lot of Ellen/Sam. This is the gold standard, people. It is such a perceptive exploration of Ellen’s character; since the fic is told from her point of view, we don’t get a lot about Sam’s motivations here, but Ellen’s are beautifully drawn and very plausible. The language is really compelling and evocative.
