lunabee34: (yuletide: is it yuletide yet by liviapen)
1. My cholesterol is pretty high. Boo. I'm going to take the next 6 months and try to get it down without medication. Heart disease runs in my family, so I don't want to play around with any risk factors. I know that being largely sedentary over the last couple years has not been good for me, so changing that is part of the plan. We are also drastically cutting pork and beef from our diet. If anyone else has successfully reduced cholesterol without meds, I'd love to hear your stories.

2. I got a Halloween card and a postcard from [personal profile] misbegotten. <3

3. I got my hair done, and it looks pretty kickass.

4. My friend in Atlanta has a Montblanc rollerball/fountain pen/mechanical pencil set, and he let me pet them. LOL

5. Fiona presented me with a poster-sized petition she had drawn entitled "Why We Should Get a Cat." It was very adorable. I already told Josh this summer that I give in, and we can get a cat, and then he just didn't, so it's a bit annoying that it's still being presented to the children that I am the barrier to the pet acquisition, but whatever. When we get home from Christmas travel, we're getting a cat. *sigh*

6. Our Walmart should have the kiddo vaccine next week. I am so relieved.

7. We had to have the other garage door motor and apparatus replaced last week because of course we did.

8.

The Cherokee IndiansThe Cherokee Indians by Nicole Claro

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

While this book glosses over the atrocities of the boarding schools for indigenous youth, it does not shy away from characterizing the European colonizers as land-hungry and hypocritical. It is pointed in its discussion of the "civilization" program (and the book uses the quotes around the word) as enthocentricism on the part of whites who did not believe the native Americans possessed any culture of their own. It also makes clear that the colonizers are happy for the native Americans to assimilate into white culture until that assimilation becomes inconvienent and interferes with their land grab (it's quite easy to justify taking land from "savages"; it's less easy to justify stealing from those who dress like you and have adopted your customs and religious practices). Not bad for a book written thirty years ago.
