1. Sooper seekrit message to
wisdomeagle and
thelastgoodname: At Emma's school, they have a program called Accelerated Reader. Each kid gets to pick her own book, read it at her own pace, and then take a test on the book. Students have to accumulate a certain number of points by the year's end, each book being worth points based on difficulty. Emma brought home a new book today, and she was so so excited about it. She pulled it out of her bag with a flourish, and it was a Babysitter's Club book-- Karen's Kitty-Cat Club. My first thought: MY BABY'S GETTING READY FOR YULETIDE! *g*
2.
hermionesviolin has posted a description of the church of her vision. This is the kind of worship and faith community that I long for.
3. A Glorious Dawn by Melodysheep
Somebody is making Carl Sagan fan vids! OMG! Everybody should watch this; not only is this clever and catchy as a song, Sagan's words are still so beautiful and pertinent in the 21st century. A must-see.
Forthcoming: SGU and SPN reviews from last week, a meta post on the intersection of vids and fic, and a personal/political post on the place of athletics in the American education system.

(I am a little disturbed at how much I remember from the Babysitters Club books)

Date: 2009-10-23 12:33 am (UTC)But yes, she is so cool.
For Halloween, she is going to be Luke Skywalker because he's handsome and cool and the hero and it doesn't even occur to her that it's "weird" to want to be this guy when all her little friends are dressing up like pink bats or princesses. I love that about her. I don't know if it's the way we are parenting her or if it's inherent to her, but she seems resistant to a lot of gender constructs (others she eats up like a spoon; thanks, Disney). She's a fun kid.

Date: 2009-10-23 02:43 am (UTC)A 4-year-old I know is going to be Darth Vader. I'm not entirely sure he knows that Vader is the baddest bad guy that ever was bad, but he's certainly the scariest thing Jack has ever encountered. Also, I'm pretty sure Emma could take Jack in a fight.
