1. Sooper seekrit message to [livejournal.com profile] wisdomeagle and [livejournal.com profile] thelastgoodname: At Emma's school, they have a program called Accelerated Reader. Each kid gets to pick her own book, read it at her own pace, and then take a test on the book. Students have to accumulate a certain number of points by the year's end, each book being worth points based on difficulty. Emma brought home a new book today, and she was so so excited about it. She pulled it out of her bag with a flourish, and it was a Babysitter's Club book-- Karen's Kitty-Cat Club. My first thought: MY BABY'S GETTING READY FOR YULETIDE! *g*

2. [livejournal.com profile] hermionesviolin has posted a description of the church of her vision. This is the kind of worship and faith community that I long for.

Somebody is making Carl Sagan fan vids! OMG! Everybody should watch this; not only is this clever and catchy as a song, Sagan's words are still so beautiful and pertinent in the 21st century. A must-see.

Forthcoming: SGU and SPN reviews from last week, a meta post on the intersection of vids and fic, and a personal/political post on the place of athletics in the American education system.

[livejournal.com profile] hermionesviolin's vision is charming, and the power of tradition is something amazing and wonderful. A community in which LGTB people and the differently abled can come together is beautiful and something to aspire to.

But isn't that possible without the trappings of religion?

Absolutely.

And recently, I'm wishing I could find that secular community because I despair that I will ever be able to believe.

MY BABY'S GETTING READY FOR YULETIDE!

Hahaha.

(I am a little disturbed at how much I remember from the Babysitters Club books)

Hell yes! It was so nice having a book where not all the girls dressed all froofy and pretty.

She is a wise child. And she has a wise mother, too. Is there an age limit on Yuletide? Because I could totally get behind supporting the Youth of Today expanding their literary chops.

You have to be eighteen. :)

But yes, she is so cool.

For Halloween, she is going to be Luke Skywalker because he's handsome and cool and the hero and it doesn't even occur to her that it's "weird" to want to be this guy when all her little friends are dressing up like pink bats or princesses. I love that about her. I don't know if it's the way we are parenting her or if it's inherent to her, but she seems resistant to a lot of gender constructs (others she eats up like a spoon; thanks, Disney). She's a fun kid.

Wow, Luke Skywalker! Now I want a lightsaber.

A 4-year-old I know is going to be Darth Vader. I'm not entirely sure he knows that Vader is the baddest bad guy that ever was bad, but he's certainly the scariest thing Jack has ever encountered. Also, I'm pretty sure Emma could take Jack in a fight.

I did not realize that. That's silly.

Yep. I agree.

I imagine if Ems gets into fandom as a teen as a writer, we'll fudge that one a little.
