1. Fiona is sick again. *sigh* Josh slept sitting up with her in a recliner all night so that she could breathe and wouldn't cough herself into choking while she was trying to sleep. Yes, I am married to the best daddy in the world. She seems to be doing better tonight; she's in her crib and not hacking out a lung, so *crosses fingers* that we get to sleep tonight.

2. Emma is home from a week away at 4-H camp, the first time she's been away to camp. Surprising no one, I kinda had a difficult time with this one emotionally. It's not being separated from her; I enjoy the weeks she spends with her grandparents and only start to truly miss her about when she's due home. But this was different because it's camp, with strangers and what if she's homesick or the kids are mean to her or she gets hurt or whatever? LOL I can't stand when things are out of my control. It's probably my worst failing and contributes to my biggest fears, my deepest sadnesses, and my most futile rages.

3. I know that several of you had remarked that you were reading Jeff Vandermeer's Southern Reach trilogy. [personal profile] tamoline has written the most fantastic fic from the perspective of the surveyor, The Surveyor's Tale that you should definitely read. Although Tamoline has read the second novel, Authority, and I think reading that novel probably enriches the experience of the fic (even though I have not done so), no spoilers beyond Annihilation. It really feels like this fic belongs in canon; the author does an excellent job of creating the same atmospheric quality from the original, and I love the way Tamoline writes the surveyor. Highly recommended. I sincerely hope Tamoline will offer to write this fandom for Yuletide because we need more of this caliber of fic for this fandom.

4. I've been swimming a quarter of a mile almost every day since May 21, and I am getting so strong. That first day, I felt so pitiful and kind of ashamed that I'd let my fitness level drop so low, but now I am cutting through the water like a brown, sleek knife and the time it takes me to swim my laps has decreased. I am a pleasantly achey Lorraine every day, and even though I sunscreen religiously, I am also a gloriously tan Lorraine. I am extremely happy with myself.

5. My dad's best friend died yesterday. He was a very sick man who'd already lived twenty years longer than anyone might have guessed after surviving pancreatic cancer and an organ transplant and diabetes and other issues. Mr. Wayne fed Emma her first bite of ice cream when she was less than a year old, and Josh and I both told him off for feeding her anything at all without asking us, much less ice cream. LOL He turned on the cop lights and the siren and cleared the way as Josh and I left our wedding in separate cars 'cause that's how we roll. And he was a very good friend to my parents. My dad has only had three very close friends in my life; the first was when I was very small, and that friend moved away and they sort of gradually lost touch. My dad's second best friend died when I was in high school. Our pastor at the time was heavily involved in the sheriff's office, and he would often ride out to medical emergencies and etc. When I arrived at school one morning, the preacher's kid told me my dad's best friend had died because his dad had been on the scene. So I got to call my dad at work and tell him his best friend had died which was about as shitty as it sounds. This is bringing up those memories for me and making me really, really sad for my dad to have lost two people he was so close to.

(Looks a bit intimidated) Um, I guess that'd mean I'd have to sign up for Yuletide this year. Though I do seem to get on well with fic writing events. If I do end up writing Southern Reach for Yuletide, there's a fantastic canonically queer woman in Authority it might be fun to play with.

1, 2, and 5, awww. Best thoughts for all reasons.

#4, WOOHOO! I nearly drowned as a child, so my swimming efforts as "stay away from the pool", but I love watching other people. I bet it feels so good, especially when you can notice yourself improving.

*nodnod* I have pretty bad hyperextension in my knees - I practically look like a flamingo sometimes - combined with knock-knees, so yeah. I hear you. A lot of exercise is just a no go for me. I do wish I could swim, but I'm leery of the water.

I can do basic dogpaddling and a fairly decent float, so I'm probably not going to drown again. XD But my general rule is if the water is higher than my waist, I'm not going in. (To this day, I can still feel the chlorine in the back of my sinuses. Yech.)

Oh, poor Fiona! I hope she's been continuing to improve.

Sympathies on Emma being gone, and on your dad's friend dying. :/

But yay for swimming! I'm not a swimmer at all myself, but I love the idea of it, and it sounds like you're having a lovely time.
