Old Country by [livejournal.com profile] astolat; Sam/Dean; Adult
I asked you guys for recs to get me back in the supernatural frame of mind and this was the absolute perfect fic to break my summer hiatus. This crossover with HP is loads of fun--Dean's commentary on parcel by owl, the Winchester reputation in the wizarding world, Dean flirting with a unicorn. It's also incredibly clever--Sam's sorted to Slytherin and Dean into Hufflepuff (not the Gryffindor I was expecting)--and their outsider perspective on the wizarding world is really insightful. "Old Country" is also suspenseful and creepy at times and tugs on the old heartstrings. Like everything I've ever read by [livejournal.com profile] astolat, this is an amazing read.

Cross Country VI: So Your Coworker's a Vampire by [livejournal.com profile] knitmeastory; Gen; PG
This crossover with The Office made me grin so hard I thought my face would break. Remember when Dwight thought Jim was a vampire? Guess who he called to rid Dunder Mifflin of the infernal undead? There's even camera asides just like in the show! So very very fun.

Drawing Constellations by [livejournal.com profile] mijmeraar; J2 and various; Adult
One of my absolute favorite movies is Love Actually and this fic is loosely based on that film. While it doesn't follow the movie's plot exactly, this fic certainly inhabits its spirit--all the joy and bittersweet ache a gal could want. Seriously nice read.

SG-1

It's Gotten Me Thinking by Meredith Bronwen Mallory; General Hammond POV; Jack/Daniel; PG
I normally don't like first person fanfic very much and I wish this piece had been written from another POV. That being said, the theme of this fic is really interesting, especially since General Hammond is not depicted as a sexual person on the show. Here, he is propositioned by Master Bra'Tac; Hammond refuses the offer, but not for the reasons you might think. Lovely.

Generally Speaking by Wonderland; Hammond-centric gen; PG
This is another first person fic, but I think the POV works much better here. This is just a day in the life of the SGC; we get to see Hammond's internal monologue as he worries about these people for whom is responsible and as he negotiates all their different needs. This feels very real to me.

1969 Prime by Redbyrd; Gen; PG-13
In the series, SG-1 is sent back in time to 1969 and is able to return because General Hammond has given Sam a note with the dates and times of solar flares. How does he know to do this? It stands to reason that the first trip SG-1 makes back in time, Hammond has no idea what to do. This fic explores that first trip through time, when a young Lt. Hammond has no clue who these strangers are or how to help them or even if he should. Really, really clever fic.

Drabbles are beautiful things, y'all. They are the poetry of fandom--these little slices of story and experience in which every single word is precise and exact and exquisitely chosen. They are paradox by which the strictures and limitations of a form become so freeing; their very economy engenders the creativity that the form should limit. This is one of the best drabbles I've ever read. 100 words and every single one cuts straight down to the bone.

for now (beginning) by [livejournal.com profile] paian; Jack/Daniel; Adult
I've been reading through SG-1 rec lists and honestly not finding as much SG-1 fic to like as I find SGA. One of the reasons is that I feel Jack is an extraordinarily difficult character to write. RDA's portrayal of him is incredibly nuanced, more so than it perhaps seems if you are not thinking way too damn much about it looking closely. Jack is a military man, through and through, but he also realizes the value of disobeying orders for the greater good. He's a joker, a trickster, hiding what he really feels behind one malaprop after another. He's emotionally closed off, unreachable. In these ways you'd think writing him would be a lot like writing John Sheppard. And here's where you'd be wrong. Something about the way RDA plays this character, the way he physically inhabits his body, makes Jack so much more difficult to write than John. Well, [livejournal.com profile] paian gets it absolutely right.

Sam and Vala walk into a bar. Sam and Vala OWN that freaking bar. Girls kicking ass and taking names never ever ever gets old, my friends. Especially when they are as awesome as these two.

OMG, I have been doing nothing but reading fic archives for what seems like the past ten years and I have found some awesome stuff. This is mostly Jack/Daniel.

I Never by Xochiquetzl Jack/Daniel Adult Yes, this is a ship fic, but what I like about it most is the amazing team banter that begins it. I love the idea of the four of them sitting around playing drinking games--getting shitfaced and being funny as hell and also revealing their vulnerabilities to each other. Carter's revelation is particularly well done and moving, I think.

Sinner's Grove by Martha Jack/Daniel Adult (non-con) Okay, here's the thing. You guys know how I adore non-con. It's a kink that I still have some reservations about, but manage to really enjoy despite those reservations. Here's a great example. Jack and Daniel are trapped on a alien world and Jack is possessed by an alien that forces him to brutally assault Daniel. There's this one scene with a gun that really pushed my buttons. This fic's pretty graphic, kiddos.

One Bare Hour by Dorothy Marley Jack/Daniel Adult SG-1 is on the eve of retrieving Shar'e. They have solid intelligence of her whereabouts and they're bringing her home. And Daniel is so very happy and so very very heartbroken. I think this is a very realistic look at the ways in which Daniel might be conflicted over reclaiming his wife. The angst factor is high here which makes it even awesomer in my estimation.

Unmade by [livejournal.com profile] destina Jack/Daniel (Character death) I love fic that goes back to those robot doubles that were made of SG-1 early in the show. I want to know as much as I can about their lives and how they've dealt with the existential angst of feeling very much like Sam Carter or Teal'c and knowing that they are not. In this fic, Daniel is reunited with robot!Jack after the real Jack has died. This is a story about missed chances, about taking what you can get, about the joy that comes where you least expect it, about finally letting go.

Surface Tension by Salieri Adult This is a Sam-centric fic, one in which she finds herself questioning the reality she's experiencing. There's sex in this fic, but it feels more like gen to me; the point of the fic isn't the sex, in other words. The sex is just another manifestation of the way Sam's sanity is eroding. I'm inordinately fond of fics in which characters become slowly aware that they are missing pieces of the puzzle and this is a great read.

First, let me wish [livejournal.com profile] spikedluv a glorious and happy birthday! Many, many happy returns.

I'd like to pimp [livejournal.com profile] ana_grrl's Random Title Generator Masterlist. This ficathon turned out scads of fic and art in a variety of fandoms including Firefly, SPN, SGA, Torchwood and Sports Night. Go read!!

On the way back into town from New Orleans, I rented Stargate the movie because I'd borrowed SG-1 season one from my parents and I figured in for a penny, in for a pound. I'd only seen the movie once in the theaters but I remembered that I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed it this time as well, but not nearly as much as either series. I think the series special effects are far superior and I think Richard Dean Anderson's interpretation of Colonel O'Neill is much more interesting than Kurt Russell's. Of course, in his defense, it's a lot easier to develop a character over the course of a season than two hours of a movie.

I'm three episodes away from the season finale of SG-1 season one and I gotta say, I'm loving it. Despite the occasional bomb (O'Neill has to grow old to discover carpe diem? Lame), I think the growing closeness between the team members is beautifully drawn and it's fun watching them discover the things that are just taken for granted on SGA. I've also started watching SGA season three and it's shaping up to be great as well. They just keep on sliding down that slippery slope don't they? LOL

And in conclusion, how much do I love Elizabeth Weir and Sam Carter and Dr. Frasier? More than words can say.

20,0000 Leagues Under the Sea by [livejournal.com profile] merryish McShep; Adult; John and Rodney take the jumper for a spin as a submersible and encounter technical difficulties. Methinks TPTB read this before filming "Grace Under Pressure."

Girl's Night Out by [livejournal.com profile] bluefall Gen Vala, Sam Carter, Elizabeth Weir and Teyla have a night out on the town in Denver. This is funny and fun and very perceptive in terms of character.

Ohashi by [livejournal.com profile] losyark Gen This is fourth in a series about Miko (the others are linked at the top of this post) and all the pieces are interesting but I like this one the best. Ronon and Miko bond over eating utensils. I have a thing for revealing peoples' characters through the way they approach food (I've got Jane Austen to thank for that one, I think) and this is a lovely example.
