So, I've been working my way through some SGA recs, and I'm ready to ask you guys for your recs. Rec me your favorite SGA stories; I want it all--gen, slash, het, etc. I really like the McShep, but I'm getting the sense that the preponderance of fic I'm gonna run across will be in that pairing, so any non-McShep recs are especially appreciated. PLEASE SELF-PIMP! I know a lot of you on the flist write in SGA, and I've been dutifully ignoring your work because I hadn't seen the show yet. So, lay it on me.

A few recs of my own to get us started (and can ya tell I started in the h/c portion of [livejournal.com profile] cathexys's recs? LOL):

Flying Blind by [livejournal.com profile] minnow1212 Gen, PG013-ish Sheppard is temporarily blinded when he and his team are captured on an alien world; this fic deals with the aftermath of that mission. It reads very much like a character study, with very nice insights on Sheppard, McKay, and Weir. McKay picked out long-sleeved shirts in the days afterward, to cover the five fingerprint bruises that Sheppard had left on his left forearm during the walk back to the jumper. It wasn’t anything shameful, obviously, but somehow the fact that Sheppard had been freaked out enough to hold onto him that tightly was…private.

A Better Fate by Chelle Sheppard/McKay Adult John and Rodney visit John's parents on their first holdiay back on Earth after undergoing capture. This story evolves quite slowly and I really like the way we discover what exactly happened to them during their capture. This is also a really nice look at the kind of family John might have come from.

On the ground, off world by [livejournal.com profile] ana_grrl Lorne/McKay Adult I think in my feedback I described this as hot, porny, sexy AWESOMENESS! And it is. It's also really, really funny. Sheppard's team gets the crazy farmers and the insect attacks; they get accidentally stuck on prison islands, hooked on drugs, and meet mist creatures that try to eat them. Evan's team just seems to make a lot of first contact with people who seal their trade agreements in the old-fashion, bodily-sharing way.

Cartography by Touch and its companion piece History of Maps by [livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock Sheppard/McKay Adult These two fics tell the same story from John and Rodney's POVs, respectively. Both fics largely take place in Dr. Heightmeyer's office, where we are given access to the complex and often achingly beautiful inner workings of these characters' minds. The language here is incredibly beautiful; the section where John muses on the simultaneous strength and fragility of women is very powerfully written.

Life Without by Kat Reitz and Perry Vic Adult I'm really disinclined to mention the pairing here because I think that in some ways doing so will spoil the enjoyment of the fic, but I know that many of you won't read a fic without that kind of info, so I'll spill. Beckett/McKay/Sheppard This fic is gloriously long and so well done that I, frankly, can't stop thinking about it. This is pretty much a massive dose of h/c--Rodney and Carson have survived the SGA version of an apocalypse and they endured a rather brutal prison term before everything went kablooey. They've learned to lean on each other and depend on each other in that aftermath and the relationship is beautifully rendered because it reads as very realistic. This story makes me very, very sad and not just for the trauma that all the characters endure. I really feel like Carson gets the short end of the stick here and my heart just hurts for him; the way he deals with what they've been through is rather heartbreaking and watching him subsume himself in Rodney is an act of both hope and sorrow. I love the way that we only discover what's happened to everyone in bits and pieces; there's a rather organic information delivery method going on here that reads quite nicely. The dialogue is spectacular and watching Rodney interact with his family is nothing short of genius. Really. I think this is the best thing I've read so far in my admittedly very limited reading time in SGA. Even if you think you're not interested in this pairing, I would give it a go.

Two things that made me happy today:

I had the most lovely phone conversation with [livejournal.com profile] cathexys about everything under the sun and then some, and I also got an email saying that with a little editing work, a paper I submitted has been accepted for publication! Whooo me! :)
