As much as I love and can totally get behind the idea of John McClane, badass who will not let society stand in the way of his massive gay love, I equally believe in John McClane, badass who is too afraid to take that step. So I'm really glad that rang true for you.

(I love that line too. LOL I am not a visual person, at all. Not when I read, not when I write. But every now and again I get a clear mental image and I could just see this guy saying that to McClane and McClane's facial expression when he did so.)
