Poems by Maya Angelou
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I bounced off this pretty hard. I'm a huge fan of Angelou's prose writing, but I haven't read her poetry (outside of an isolated poem here and there) since I was a teen.
I really like about 1/4 of this: poems about the black experience, at least one poem about black response to feminism, multiple poems from a queer perspective, some very beautiful turns of phrase.
On the whole, though, it doesn't grab me, and I think it's the rhyme. I think I have a knee-jerk, do-not-want reaction to most rhyming poetry; it sounds juvenile to me even when it's not.
I really surprised myself by not liking this as much as I thought I would.
