Basically, Medea had nothing. She betrayed her father in order to get the golden fleece for Jason, so she has absolutely no family support other than her husband. And she has two children to support, if Jason's new wife won't accept them.

Her only option, other than maybe prostitution or something, was to beg for someone to take her in - which, incidentally, is what she does.
