I could see Anya trying smoking because she somehow (maybe from movies) got the impression that it's sexy or it would make her seem more human. And I can totally buy Dawn in her rebellious phase smoking with Janice.

This whole post has made me want to write fics where characters smoke--the one I mention upthread where a young Rodney McKay tries to smoke to impress an older lover or the one where Jesse and Xander steal a pack off Jesse's dad and make themselves sick or the one where Giles starts smoking again after Jenny dies because if he doesn't do something with his hands he'll just sit and look at them and how broken they are.
