A friend linked me to this blog post in which a mother talks about the negative reception her young son received when he dressed as Daphne from Scooby Doo for Halloween.

This post makes me sad. And it makes me angry. Really, really fucking angry.

Because what is wrong with a boy being inspired and looking up to a female fictional character? Not a damn thing.

My daughter always wants to dress as male fictional characters for Halloween (with the occasional fire bat and were cat thrown in). She's been Superman (adamantly NOT Supergirl) and Luke Skywalker. She acknowledges that Janeway is the awesomest person of EVEREVEREVER, yet when she plays voyager, she always wants to be Chakotay. In between bouts of playing Jedi Mom (in which she is a mom! and a Jedi!), she wants to be Anakin. And possibly R2D2.

And nobody has ever given her shit about this, which after reading this mom's blog post, I realize I have been extremely lucky to avoid. Especially since I live in a Southern Baptist enclave.

And how fucking sick is it that a little girl in a Jedi robe isn't threatening, but a little boy in a girl's wig gets everybody all het up?

*flaily hands*

This is becoming a regrettably frequent emotion, but I feel full of rage.

Also, in unrelated and much happier news, Battlestar Galactica shout-out on the Daily Show. *fist-bump with Josh*
