Today is 20 facts about me.

1. I just turned 34 this June.

2. My husband Josh and I started dating in fall 1998 and got married in the spring of 2001.

3. My older daughter Emma will be 11 in December, and my younger daughter Fiona turns 12 weeks old today.

4. We have two cats named Tweek and Electra. Josh rescued Tweek the summer of 1999 while I was studying abroad in France, and we got Electra some months later when we moved into our first apartment together.

5. My favorite singer of all time is Ryan Adams. Some of his songs I don't like (sometimes he goes on this nasally, whiny kick that does not do it for me), and some whole albums are pretty much a bust for me (Jacksonville City Nights, I'm looking at you; there's only two songs on that album worth listening to really--"Withering Heights" and "Don't Fail Me Now."), but when the man is on, he's brilliant. I cannot tell you the depth and fervency of my wish that he would sing a song with my name in it; I mean, Lorraine rhymes with everything, Ryan. Get with the program.

6. I found online fandom in December 2004 through some Spuffy I ran across accidentally.

7. I was raised fundamentalist, evangelical Southern Baptist and converted to Catholicism when I was in graduate school, the year Emma was born. I am deeply ambivalent about religion; it's very difficult for me to rid my thought processes of the hurtful and damaging religious beliefs I grew up with, but Catholicism has its own set of problems. Mostly, I'd like to believe in something and can't really make myself commit to anything other than a vague sort of agnosticism.

8. I am a college professor of English. I have wanted to be one since before I was in grade school, and my entire educational career has been geared toward making that happen.

9. I have one younger brother; we are two and a half years apart and were three grades apart in school.

10. I almost changed my major to geology in undergrad because my Intro to Geology teacher was incredibly charismatic, and I found the subject matter fascinating.

11. I make the best French onion soup I have ever eaten, including the soup I ate while I was studying in France.

12. My favorite color is grey. Lots of greys and blacks in my wardrobe (and eye shadow collection LOL).

13. Because my mother was a college professor and my dad taught junior high, we did a lot of travelling in the summers when I was growing up. I've been to almost all the fifty states and visited almost every national park in the country; the only region we didn't travel to was New England. We made numerous trips out West, though. I had my 7th birthday at the Grand Canyon.

14. I cannot stand the sound of one cricket chirping. A million crickets in which no single, individual cricket's song is really indistinguishable? Fine. One cricket chirping while I'm trying to sleep drives me insane. I've gone outside and tried to find the bastard to murder before. Because of how helpful that course of action is. LOL

15. I have had degenerative arthritis in my knees since I was fifteen. My kneecaps would pop out of socket and move over to the side of my legs before snapping back into place when I was a kid. Over the years, that's just destroyed all the cushiony stuff in my knees which means that I can always tell you when it's going to rain and the cold is not my friend.

16. I do not like glazed donuts. In fact, I could never eat another donut of any kind again and be fine.

17. Josh and I have amassed a pretty amazing art collection--two signed Giger prints, temple rubbings from Sri Lanka, a silk-screened Japanese woman in a kimono, etc. Even when all we had was the rattiest, most mismatched furniture, our walls looked good. LOL

18. I just finished my Ph.D. in Victorian literature. I started in the spring of 2004, so it took me 9 years to get it. A couple of those years, I was not enrolled and actively working on the degree, but still. Sheesh. So glad that's finished.

19. I really like teaching comp. I know this makes me a minority among my academic colleagues, but if all I ever got to teach again was comp, I'd be fine. It's such an important class, and there's so many different things you can do in the course. I never teach the same class twice, and I genuinely have fun teaching it.

20. I am not a dog person. I don't like to be licked or jumped on, I hate barking, and I don't like the way most dogs smell. I also don't want to have to pay a significant amount of attention to a pet, which is why we have cats. I attribute my canine antipathy to a dog that lived across the street when I was a kid who bit my mom and tried to eat my brother and scared the daylights out of me.
