I wish I marked up books more than I do. It's not because I worship authorial intent or anything like that, it's because even when I do mark them, I have to do it in pencil so I can go back and change what I've said as my own thoughts and feelings (and sense of humor) change. I have no respect for the author, especially me-author. That said, I love margins — the physical space of margins. I like margins perhaps even more than the words themselves.

And I love used books more than new books, so I can read what other people have said (underlined more than highlighted; the highlighter has done more to ruin western intellectualism than even Republicans), and sometimes I make marginal notes on other people's marginal notes. I think that's best; really, books should be all margin and very few words, so we can share more thoughts.
