With Emma gone this week to camp, Josh and I have watched a lot of movies and read a lot of books. Fiona goes to bed at 7:00, so we've had two extra hours each day to kill.

Yesterday we went to see Inside Out because Emma expressed negative interest in seeing the movie. One of the best movies I've seen in quite a while, y'all. We listened to the NPR interview with the writer of the film several weeks ago, and I was really impressed with the efforts he and the film team made to represent memory and cognitive processes as scientifically as possible. I am even more impressed now that I've seen the movie.

One of the things the writer said to Terri Gross is that when they pitched the movie to Mindy Kaling (who is the voice of disgust), she was really moved that the film is about how growing up hurts and that's okay. I think the movie is also about the way that sadness is necessary for joy to even exist and necessary for growth and that sometimes the most important and foundational experiences of our lives are bittersweet. As you might suspect, I wept through most of the movie.

The movie also got me to thinking about what my core memories are, the handful of memories that have shaped me into who I am. I suspect there's at least two or three memories that I can't readily recall that are just as important as those I can.

Highly recommend this one.

What I do not recommend is John Wick. Josh and I watched that last night, and it was pretty middling. I didn't know anything about the movie so I wasn't sure what to expect. It started so slowly with him moping around his house after his wife's death, and there's no indication of anything about his life except that he's clearly fabulously wealthy. Then he meets Theon Greyjoy (always a little dipshit no matter the universe) who steals his car and kills his dog. This is the point at which I almost gave up on the movie. The dog was a present from his wife from beyond the grave; she'd arranged for the dog to be delivered to him after she died from a protracted illness. Theon and Thugs hurt the dog and knock out John Wick. The screen goes dark and then Wick wakes up and the dog has dragged itself over by him to die at some point in the night. I got really, really upset and had a hard time enjoying the rest of the movie, which was pretty mediocre. I think I could have enjoyed how silly it was and how much John Wick does not give a fuck if not for the dog dying like that. The action scenes were good, the humor was solid at points, and I liked the plot point of a hotel for assassins where they all agree to leave business outside the building. Also, pretty stellar cast (hello, Ian McShane!) for such a blah movie.

Tonight we're starting our good friends on Treme. He's a musician who just spent the past umpteen years living in LA, so I expect him to know everybody in the show. Should be fun.

One episode of Rome left. Joe Carroll in eyeliner makes a girl's heart go pitter patter. LOL
