Movies and whatnot

Independence Day is getting a sequel.. Whoooooo! (link goes to trailer) I was 17 when the original movie came out, and I saw it on July 4th, and it was one of the best movie-going experiences I have ever had. The crowd was super into it and interactive and cheering, and every damn time it comes on TNT, I tear up when Bill Pullman makes that speech to the troops. Sequel looks good.
In other trailer news, the new Star Trek movie has a trailer. It's a bit hard to tell what the movie is about, but it looks fun. I'll definitely be watching.
I watched Amy Schumer's Trainwreck a couple nights ago with a girlfriend. I thought the movie was very funny overall. LeBron James was surprisingly good. His scenes were among my favorites in the movie. And Schumer showed surprising depth in her role as well. Several times she was required to show deep emotion, and I thought she did a really good job. Her eulogy for her dad was genuinely moving and well acted. She has much more range than I would have presumed going into the movie.
That being said, I was not rooting for her character at all, nor did I like her. I think her character was a hugely shitty person who did not deserve the happy ending she gets. LOL
I get that we've had a fair amount of comedy movies about guys who sleep around and drink a lot and who are clueless dicks (although to be fair, I'm trying to think of a movie where the guy is as deliberately cruel as Amy is in this movie), but I don't get why adding the female version to the body of work is so groundbreaking, especially since she's isn't shown being empowered by those choices but rather diminished by them. All her sleeping around is empty. Her drinking and drug use causes her to lose her job. Etc., etc., etc.
IDK The movie was funny, laugh out loud funny. Not sorry I watched it at all but I liked it despite the protagonist instead of because of her.
Who else is watching Into the Badlands? They snookered me in when they refused to show the trailer for the upcoming Walking Dead until the first commercial break of Into the Badlands. WHICH WAS THIRTY MINUTES INTO THE FREAKING EPISODE, MY FRIENDS. But the marketing division clearly knows its business because that's all it took to hook me.
The show is visually gorgeous and deeply saturated in color. After loving so many shows that are tinged in gray and sepia and blue, the rich color palette of this one is so refreshing.
It's very violent but Tarantino-esque in the over-the-top, badass, cartoony nature of the violence. The fight scenes are a real pleasure.
The world building leaves a bit to be desired. We're told once, in a voice-over that begins the first episode, that a long time ago and farther back than any living memory there were wars that destroyed mankind. The wars were followed by a period of darkness and then leaders called Barons emerged who put order to the chaos and enslaved the people in their respective territories. They also banned guns.
So, IDK where this is even taking place. I'm assuming North America, but that's not clear. Even though guns have been banned, there should be a thriving black market for them. Banning a thing does not erase a thing or mean that nobody knows how to make a thing. I get they did this so that cool hand-to-hand and bladed weapons battles can take place, but it makes no sense.
I think my favorite part of the show is the relationship between the wife of the Baron the show is following most closely and the second wife he has chosen to take. New wife was raised in the household as a servant and was involved with the Baron's son. She clearly thought she was going to grow up and marry the son or at least be his mistress. Instead, the Baron chooses her to be his second wife. The first wife is jealous and angry, naturally. They're shown being antagonistic for a few episodes, and then new wife saves the life of the Baron's son and she steps up in a major way in a crisis and she and the first wife seem to have reached a place of mutual respect.
And then the last episode ended with new wife appearing to be poisoned. Aaaaaaack. We've heard rumors that the other second wife the Baron took years ago died of "natural causes" that seem to be poisoning.
Not gonna lie. I will be pissed if first wife tries to kill/kills second wife.
In any event, really liking this show. It's beautiful and fun. Loads of shipping potential for all kinds of pairings. Lots of kickass female characters. Clothes porn to die for.
In other excellent news, Fi went back to daycare today and had herself a fine time. I am deeply relieved.
Cross your fingers for Josh tomorrow.
